  77. 1.1 About File Manager Toolbar
  78. -----------------------------

  80.    FM Toolbar is an extender of File Manager for Microsoft(R)
  81.    Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups(tm) 3.11.

  83.    Chaosoft Toolbar is an attractive alternative to the native
  84.    Windows toolbar. Fully user- customizable, it provides about
  85.    twice as many buttons, support for MS Tools, handy 'tooltips'
  86.    for novice users (a'la toolbar for Word and Excel).

  96.    for File Manager is one of two main reasons why individual
  97.    users of Windows 3.1 upgrade to Windows for Workgroups (the

  119. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  120. which you can "try before you buy".
  121.  
  122. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  123. evaluation period of up to 14 days. After that time, you are
  124. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software
  125. or else stop using it. You may freely copy and distribute
  126. evaluation copies of FM Toolbar provided that all conditions
  127. specified in the distribution license are satisfied (please see
  128. the license agreement in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  130. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  131.  
  132. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  133. licensed versions of this software (except for the 'registration
  134. reminders', displayed by the evaluation version).  Actually, it's
  135. the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy to a registered
  136. copy by entering your name and a registration code into the system.
  137. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be
  138. 'unregistered' by deleting the registration code or by just copying
  139. the program to another machine.

  141. Evaluation copies of our products are 100% fully functional.  We
  142. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
  143. whether or not they fit your needs.  Please understand that if you
  144. fail to register, and continue to use FM Toolbar beyond the eval-
  145. uation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
  146. maintain its original functionality:  some features may become
  147. disabled.  If you need more time to decide whether you want to
  148. keep the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the
  149. evaluation period.  However, we cannot afford to let you use the
  150. program without compensation.  In addition, it is unfair to our
  151. customers who do register to use the program.  We appreciate your
  152. understanding of this policy.

  174. How to purchase a license for continued use of FM Toolbar
  175. ---------------------------------------------------------

  177. ChaoSoft licenses the software on the 'per-user', not a
  178. 'per-computer' basis.  This means that you may purchase a single
  179. individual license and use FM Toolbar on more than one computer (for
  180. example, a desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the
  181. only user of those computers and there is no possibility to use the
  182. Registered Copy by anybody else.
  183.  
  184. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  185. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  186. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  187. accessing the computer must be obtained.
  188.

  215. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM Toolbar is not a
  216. stand-alone program; there is no special executable file you would
  217. run to start the FM Toolbar. To use FM Toolbar, all you need is to
  218. properly install it, and it will run automatically every time you
  219. run File Manager.
  220.  
  221. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  222. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  223. FM Toolbar comes with convenient and flexible SETUP utility. Use
  224. SETUP if you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software
  225. or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for permament
  226. use.
  227.  
  228. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  229. ------------------------------------------
  230.  
  231. If you obtained FM Toolbar on a diskette or CD-ROM and
  232. want to take a look at the utility without installing it onto
  233. your hard disk, run SETUP.EXE from the FM Toolbar directory on the
  234. diskette or CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
  235.  
  236.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
  237.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
  238.  
  239.         A:\TOOLBAR\SETUP.EXE
  240.  
  241.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
  242.     drive)
  243.  
  244. After that, run File Manager. You should see a new item in the
  245. main menu, Toolbar (If there is no such an item, FM Toolbar has
  246. not been activated; see information below in this file for
  247. possible reasons.) Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with
  248. FM Toolbar is available during the loading of File Manager!
  249.  
  250. Now, if you see that FM Toolbar is not what you need, just run
  251. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. Your system will
  252. forget all about FM Toolbar!
  253.  
  254. On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer try
  255. and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive,
  256. choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see
  257. the next section for more information.
  258.  
  259. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  260. -------------------------------------------------
  261.  
  262. If you have already copied all the files from the FM Toolbar
  263. package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the
  264. files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate'
  265. button.
  266.  
  267. If you don't have the FM Toolbar files on the hard disk, choose
  268. 'Install' button instead. Then, enter the path to the directory
  269. where you want FM Toolbar to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE
  270. will copy all the files to the new location and then activate
  271. them. In addition, you will be prompted to create a separate
  272. program group for FM Toolbar. It's not essential to have such a
  273. group, but it may be convenient. In any case, the last word is
  274. yours!
  275.  
  276. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM Toolbar
  277. -----------------------------
  278.  
  279. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM Toolbar, run
  280. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
  281. start using FM Toolbar later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose
  282. 'Activate'.
  283.  
  284. Otherwise, to completely remove FM Toolbar from your system,
  285. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove
  286. all the files from directory on your hard disk or network drive
  287. where you have installed FM Toolbar. In addition, delete program
  288. group 'FMToolbar' from the Program Manager, if your created it
  289. during installation.
  290.  
  291. 2.2. Registering your copy of FM Toolbar
  292. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  293. Sometimes, FM Toolbar displays a registration reminder, and the
  294. "About FM Toolbar" screen reads 'Unregistered copy'. If you have
  295. registered FM Toolbar and obtained your personal Registration Code
  296. from us, you may use it to prevent the registration reminder from
  297. being displayed and enter your name in the 'About FM Toolbar'
  298. screen. Choose 'Register' from the 'Toolbar' submenu of File
  299. Manager and when a dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as
  300. it appears in your Registration Acknowledgment) and the
  301. Registration Code.
  302.  
  303. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
  304. Registration Acknowledgment, including all the spaces, punctuation,
  305. and entering letters in proper case (upper or lower). If you wish
  306. your name to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll
  307. assign a new registration code.
  308.  
  309. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  310. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  311. If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
  312. FM Toolbar manually as follows:
  313.  
  314. 1. Create a directory for FM Toolbar on your hard disk, say
  315.    C:\TOOLBAR, and copy all the files from the FM Toolbar
  316.    installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
  317.    Toolbar files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  318.    from it.
  319.  
  320. 2. Close File Manager.
  321.  
  322. 3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  323.    text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
  324.    your hard disk (or the directory you specified when installing
  325.    Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, *not*
  326.    WIN.INI.
  327.  
  328.    Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following
  329.    string right after the string [AddOns]:
  330.  
  331.         FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL
  332.  
  333.    (or specify the directory you copied FM Toolbar's files into,
  334.    if other than TOOLBAR).
  335.  
  336.    The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
  337.    this:
  338.  
  339.         ...
  340.         [AddOns]
  341.         FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL
  342.         ...
  343.  
  344.    (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
  345.  
  346. 4. Run File Manager.
  347.  
  348. If the installation has been completed successfully, you should
  349. see a new menu item, Toolbar, among the other items of the File
  350. Manager's main menu. If you cannot see the Toolbar item in the
  351. main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify
  352. that you have done all the steps above, and, in particular, have
  353. specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the
  354. WINFILE.INI file. Also, make sure that the files have not been
  355. corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk (Each file
  356. should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)
  357.  
  358. To manually uninstall FM Toolbar:
  359.  
  360. 1. Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM Toolbar=...' from
  361.    the WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that,
  362.    when you restart File Manager, FM Toolbar will not be loaded.
  363.    If you decide later to start using FM Toolbar again, type the
  364.    string 'FM Toolbar=...', specifying the complete DOS path to
  365.    the FMTB.DLL file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI
  366.    file.
  367.  
  368. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to
  369. remove the FM Toolbar from your system permanently:
  370.  
  371. 2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  372.    you installed FM Toolbar;
  373.  
  374. 3. Delete program group 'FMToolbar' in the Program Manager window,
  375.    if there is one.
  376.
