  1. Thank you for trying DLL Master.  We hope you will find it a
  2. useful Windows tool.

  4. DLL Master lists all modules currently loaded in Windows' 
  5. memory, and allows you to load, unload, or decrement the use 
  6. count of DLLs--at your own risk, of course.  Module path, 
  7. datetime, filesize and internal version and header info are 
  8. shown; multiple lists are kept, lists can be compared, 
  9. printed, saved to and restored from disk. Specific DLLs can 
  10. also be loaded at Windows' startup. Requires Windows 3.1 or
  11. later.

  13. DLL Master is a shareware program written in Visual Basic, 
  14. and as such requires the VB 3.0 runtime module VBRUN300.DLL 
  15. as well as certain other modules in order to run. Since these 
  16. files take up a lot of space and increase download time, the 
  17. large VBRUN300.DLL is not included in the shareware version. 
  18. VBRUN300.DLL is available on many bulletin boards including 
  19. Compuserve. If you can't get hold of it send us $3.00 for 
  20. shipping/handling and we'll send it to you.

  22. The registered version of DLL Master, DLLMSTRG.ZIP, contains 
  23. all the necessary files, since it is normally provided on 
  24. disk by mail.

  27. TO INSTALL DLL MASTER FROM DLLMSTSW.ZIP:
  28.  
  29. This zipfile contains only the program, helpfile, supporting DLL
  30. and some accompanying text files. It does not contain VBRUN300.DLL,
  31. GRID.VBX, THREED.VBX, CMDIALOG.VBX or COMMDLG.DLL, which are 
  32. required for running DLL Master. If you are reading this README file 
  33. having unzipped it from DLLMSTSW.ZIP, you have already completed the
  34. installation. Just run DLL Master from the File/Run menu or set
  35. up an icon for it.

  37. DLL Master was compiled in the presence of the following VBX versions:
  38.  
  39.         THREED   VBX     64432 07-16-93   3:28p
  40.         CMDIALOG VBX     18688 04-28-93  12:00a
  41.         GRID     VBX     44656 04-28-93  12:00a

  43. Older versions of THREED.VBX in particular can cause problems. If
  44. you experience problems which you think might be caused by outdated
  45. DLLs or VBXs, download DLLMST33.ZIP, which contains adequate
  46. versions of all needed files.  DLLMST33.ZIP can be found on
  47. Compuserve.

  50. TO INSTALL DLL MASTER FROM DLLMST33.ZIP or DLLMSTRG.ZIP:
  51.  
  52. 1) Create a temporary directory on your hard disk. For example:
  53.         
  54.         md c:\dllmtemp
  55.  
  56. 2) Using PKUNZIP, unzip DLLMST33.ZIP or DLLMSTRG.ZIP into the new 
  57.    directory. For example:
  58.  
  59.         pkunzip a:dllmst33 c:\dllmtemp
  60.  
  61. 3) Go into Windows, select the File/Run menu, and run SETUP:
  62.  
  63.         c:\dllmtemp\setup.exe
  64.  
  65.    Setup will properly install DLL Master as a Windows application,
  66.    into the directory of your choice. After this has been done you 
  67.    may delete the temporary directory and its contents.

  70. WHAT TO DO IF SETUP CANNOT INSTALL A FILE:
  71.  
  72. Sometimes the SETUP program cannot install a newer version of a DLL 
  73. or other module because an existing version of the module is in use 
  74. and Windows will not allow it to be overlaid. In this case, you will 
  75. want to install the module manually. Here are the steps to do this:
  76.  
  77. 1) Exit from Windows.
  78.  
  79. 2) Use the EXPAND utility to decompress the file from the temporary
  80.    directory. The compressed version of the file has an underscore 
  81.    as the last character of the extension. For example, THREED.VBX 
  82.    will appear as THREED.VB_. (In fact, THREED.VBX may very well 
  83.    be in use when you run install DLL Master.) In this example, you
  84.    would expand the file by running the following command from the 
  85.    DOS prompt:

  87.         expand c:\dlltemp\threed.vb_ \windows\system\threed.vbx
  88.  
  89.    The various file extensions are transformed as follows: any VB_ 
  90.    extension becomes VBX, DL_ becomes DLL, EX_ becomes EXE, etc.
  91.    
  92.    EXPAND.EXE should exist on your system in both the \WINDOWS and
  93.    \DOS directories.
  94.    
  95. 3) Verify that the new version was indeed expanded and copied, and
  96.    then restart Windows.

  105. KNOWN ISSUES AND INCOMPATIBILITIES:
  106.  
  107. THREED.VBX, a module used by DLL Master, underwent several revisions 
  108. in 1993.  Also, a separate version was apparently included with certain 
  109. versions of printer software accompanying laser printers from a very 
  110. excellent company which shall remain nameless. Which one is the "right"
  111. one? We don't know. If, when the mouse pointer rests on one of the 
  112. toolbar icons for over half a second, a yellow 'tool tip' or help 
  113. balloon does not pop up just beneath the pointer, then you probably 
  114. have a version of THREED.VBX on your machine which is slightly 
  115. incompatible with the one used when DLL Master was compiled. Another 
  116. symptom is that the toolbar and the logo that displays at startup are 
  117. white instead of gray. You can download the most current version of 
  118. THREED.VBX from Compuserve ('GO SHERIDAN').  DLL Master 3.2 ships
  119. with the 7/16/93 version (filesize 64432, internal version 3.0.1).

  121. If you display version information for CPQHQV08.EXE version 3.10.00  
  122. (this is a Compaq QVision display driver), the Language combo will
  123. list 8 languages.  However, no matter which one you select, the 
  124. string file information still displays in English. This is not a
  125. DLL Master bug. The version resource inside CPQHQV08.EXE actually
  126. contains a subsection for each of the languages--all identical, all
  127. in English.
