Installation, Update and
Uninstall Instructions for
FlashPoint Windows UnZIP95
---------------------------------
SHAREWARE/EVALUATION COPY ONLY
PRE-RELEASE 2.04.00.00
December, 1995
=================================
This is the latest version of FlashPoint UnZIP95 (tm) -- the only
Completely Simple (tm) solution for managing zipped files under
Microsoft Windows95.
===============================================================
The file UNZIP95S.EXE is a self extracting Windows archive file
which must be expanded to a temporary directory on your hard
drive before FPSETUP.EXE can be run.
===============================================================
To install this product on your system, do the following:
1. Make a backup copy of your REG.DAT and any existing FPZIP.INI
files -- BEFORE RUNNING FPSETUP.EXE.
2. Close any running Windows95 Explorer windows. The setup program
installs a new Explorer Shell Extension (UNZIP95.DLL), and if
you are already running an old version of this DLL it should be
replaced with the new version. If the new file is copied over a
copy currently in use by Explorer, your system will become
unstable and you may experience some Protection or other errors;
this problem is cured, if it occurs, by simply exiting and then
restarting Windows95. If Windows95 refuses to let you overwrite
the UNZIP95.DLL or any other file, exit to DOS and manually copy
same from the tempory directory to the applicable target
directory (see, FP_NEWS!.WRI or the Windows95 Help file for a
description of where each file is installed).
3. Run UNZIP95S.EXE (e.g., by double-clicking on the file's name
in Explorer or File Manager, or using the "Run" command available
in the Start Menu, File Menu of Windows' Program or File Manager,
or other shell utility). This will expand all installation files
to a user specified temporary directory. If you're reading this
message, you've already completed this step.
4. Run FPSETUP.EXE (e.g., by double-clicking on the file's name
in Explorer or File Manager, or using the "Run" command available
in the Start Menu, File Menu of Windows' Program or File Manager,
or other shell utility). This will start the FlashPoint Windows
ZIP Setup program. This application is loaded automatically, in
normal installations, if you ran UNZIP95S.EXE as stated in Step 3,
above.
5. Answer the prompts that display on your screen as FPSETUP runs.
6. Add the FlashPoint UnZIP95 application directory path to the
"PATH=" statement in your DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT file, if the
applications were not installed in an existing directory
referenced in your AUTOEXEC.BAT "PATH=" statement.
7. Exit to DOS, reboot your computer and then reload Windows95, so
that the new settings will take effect.
8. Delete all files in the temporary directory from which you
installed this product.
9. If you click on the "UnZIP95 Help" icon in Explorer, My Computer,
or other folder, window or menu item, and get a error message that
Windows95 cannot find the UNZIP95.HLP file, you will need to
revise the current target path name. Generally, the target path
can be corrected via a "Properties" Setup panel. Simply open the
properties dialog and delete the incorrect path, leaving only the
filename "UNZIP95.HLP" -- this file is located in the Windows95
system directory which Windows95 automatically searches (so you
need not enter the actual target directory).

Quick Start for Working with Existing Zip Archives
--------------------------------------------------
When UnZIP95 is correctly installed, a simple click of the right mouse
button, on a file with a ZIP extension, in an Explorer window will display
the new Explorer context menu. You can then select a new menu item, such
as Unzip, Check Integrity, Display Comment or Properties, to begin using
UnZIP95.
By default, the FlashPoint UnZIP95 Setup program, if used to install
UnZIP95, recognizes all files having a "ZIP" file extension as FlashPoint
Zip archive files, and assigns a new custom ZIP archive icon to each file.
To optimize UnZIP95's features on your system, refer to the applicable
shell or file manager application's user manual, or to the Microsoft
Windows95 User Guide, for information on how to associate files and use
the new Windows95 Registration Database.
Uninstalling UnZIP95 Files
--------------------------
To remove the UnZIP95 files and configurations from a user's system,
simply reverse the manual installation steps, by removing the appropriate
settings from the WINFILE.INI and REG.DAT files and deleting the specified
UNZIP95 files from the user's disk.
UnZIP95 may be manually uninstalled, by following these steps:
1. Delete the application files (those ending with the file
extension "EXE") and the help files (those ending with the
file extension "HLP"), from the user's system. These files
include the following filenames:
fpzxx32.exe
unzip95.exe
unzip95.hlp
These files may be located in the Windows95 directory, the
Windows95 System directory or a directory that is accessible
through the DOS PATH setting. Their exact location depends
on how the product was originally installed.
2. Delete the dynamic link libraries and resource files (those
ending with the file extension "DLL"), from the user's system.
These files include the following filenames:
unzip95.dll
These files may be located in the Windows95 directory, the
Windows95 System directory or a directory that is accessible
through the DOS PATH setting. Their exact location depends
on how the product was originally installed.
3. Also delete the UnZIP95 files from the user designated
UnZIP95 directory (specified by the user when FPSETUP.EXE was
run). These files may include the following:
readme.txt
fp_news!.wri
compusrv.txt
cis.ico
discount.txt
4. If you made a backup copy of the REG.DAT file, you can simply
recopy the old backup copy over the new version (provided,
you have not made any additional modifications to your system
since installing UnZIP95). Otherwise, you will have to
manually edit same as indicated below.
Experienced users may modify applicable sections of the
REG.DAT file, removing all references to "UnZIP95." In
Windows95, you must edit the REG.DAT file, using the
Registration Info Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) program. See, the
Microsoft Windows95 User's Guide, for instructions on the
Registration Database.
The UNZIP95.REG files contains references to all lines
added to the Windows95 REG.DAT file. These lines may
be deleted by experienced users using the REGEDIT
applications, search and delete capabilities. Note,
however, that other third-party and FlashPoint Windows
applications and utilities, including FlashPoint Zip
Navigator ("ZipNAV"), also rely on these REG.DAT entries;
thus, deleting these lines can also disable other utilities
(and even Windows95 itself).
