  27. WHAT IS FRENETIC
  28. ----------------

  30. Frenetic is a screensaver for Windows 3.1. It creates an endless variety of
  31. colorful graphic abstractions by combining a wealth of drawing elements to
  32. paint pictures on your screen, then it clears them off and starts afresh.
  33.  
  34. Sometimes it takes a while to generate something interesting, so please give
  35. it a few goes if it is not initially appealing. You can move it along by
  36. pressing 'f'.
  37.  
  38. The screensaver uses a 256 color palette if available, but it also runs
  39. on 16-color VGA.

  42. INSTALLATION
  43. ------------
  44.  
  45. 1. Copy the file frenetic.scr into your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  46.  
  47. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  48.  
  49. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  50.  
  51. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Frenetic.
  52.  
  53. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  54.  
  55. 6. Press Setup to display Shareware and support details, and access
  56.    configuration options.

  58.  
  59. SETUP OPTIONS
  60. -------------
  61.  
  62. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  63. screen by pressing the Options button.
  64.  
  65. Available options:
  66.  
  67. HIDE MOUSE
  68.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  69.     screensaver is running.
  70.  
  71. SPEED
  72.     1    Changes the speed to Slow, so that only the slower drawings
  73.          are used, making it less distracting if you are trying to work
  74.          next to the computer.
  75.  
  76.     2    Normal speed - uses all drawings.
  77.  
  78.     3    Changes the speed to Fast, making it more entertaining.

  81. TEXT MESSAGES
  82.     You can have your own messages periodically displayed by entering a
  83.     series of phrases, each separated by a semi-colon, such as "text=My
  84.     message;Second message;Third;fourth". The messages are displayed at
  85.     random, and not necessarily immediately or every run.
  86.  
  87. Note that for the unregistered Shareware version, these options only apply to
  88. the very next run of Frenetic, and then they are cleared.

  91. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  92. ---------------

  94. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  95.  
  96. c    On a 256 color system, the Colors being used will be changed and the
  97.      screen cleared.
  98.  
  99. f    The current drawing will Finish. Useful if it appears to be stuck or you
  100.      want it to move on.
  101.  
  102. p,P  Pressing p will cause Frenetic pause at the end of the current drawing,
  103.      and not continue until you press shift+P. This is useful for those times
  104.      Frenetic takes a long while to draw something you want to see, but then
  105.      it wipes it immediately. By pausing, the drawing will remain on the
  106.      screen until you restart Frenetic.
  107.  
  108. 1,2,3    Selects the speed, as described above under Setup Options.
  109.  
  110. You may also rename Frenetic.scr to Frenetic.exe and run it directly, perhaps
  111. adding it to Program Manager and using a short-cut key.

  114. SHAREWARE REGISTRATION
  115. ----------------------
  116.  
  117. Frenetic Screensaver is Shareware, in other words "try before you buy".  It is
  118. not free software.  Frenetic is provided at no charge for you to evaluate.
  119. The essence of Shareware is to provide personal computer users with quality
  120. software at low prices, and to provide incentive for programmers to continue
  121. to develop new products.
  122.  
  123. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  124. development of additional graphics and features.

  127. US$10.00 (or its equivalent in your currency) to:

  145. Alternatively, you may register Frenetic on-line on Compuserve. After logging
  146. on to Compuserve, enter GO SWREG, and request ID 4667.

  148. The screensaver occasionally displays shareware messages like "Please register
  149. Frenetic".  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be mailed or emailed
  150. a code which will remove these messages, and will allow your Setup Options to
  151. be kept.  This registration code must be entered into the Registration field
  152. on the Setup screen.

  154. In order to keep the cost of Frenetic low, diskettes are not mailed as part of
  155. the base registration.  The latest version is available on various on-line
  156. services as described below.  However, you can have the latest version sent by
  157. 3.5" diskette for an extra charge of US$10 (or A$5 in Australia).

  159. These prices and conditions are valid until 31st December 1995, and are
  160. subject to change with future versions.

  163. TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
  164. ----------------------

  166. Because there can be a delay in sending and processing mail registrations, a
  167. temporary code can be provided by email. When you have mailed your cheque, you
  168. can also send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au and a temporary code
  169. which expires will be emailed back to you. When your cheque is received, a
  170. registration code will be sent.

  176. Frenetic is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by Seraline Pty
  177. Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected by Australian
  178. copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  179.  
  180. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  181. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  182. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  183. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.
  184.  
  185. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile,
  186. disassemble, otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program
  187. except as provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result
  188. in immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  190. The registration fee will license Frenetic for use on any computers in your
  191. home, and on one computer at work on which you are the primary user.

  193. Registered users will be licensed to use, free of charge, any version 3.nn of
  194. Frenetic, and they will be notified by email of any significant 3.nn updates.
  195. Registered users will also be advised by email when the major upgrade to
  196. version 4 becomes available.

  215. Please note that although Frenetic is released with no known defects that
  216. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  217. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  218. video drivers.  You should use the evaluation period to check that Frenetic
  219. does not cause problems with your system. See KNOWN PROBLEMS below for some
  220. work-arounds. If it crashes each day, there may be an incompatibility,
  221. although this shouldn't cause any other problems apart from stopping the
  222. screensaver.  If it crashes Windows, stop running Frenetic.

  240. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  241. --------------
  242.  
  243. Some video drivers seem to get a GP Fault when too much stretching or
  244. shrinking is applied to fonts or images. If you find you get several GP Faults
  245. and there are large or small characters on the screen at the time, then add
  246. the line "font stretch=no" to the Frenetic section in your control.ini, using
  247. Notepad. If there are still problems with characters, try "fonts=no". If there
  248. are still GP Faults, then add the line "image stretch=no".
  249.  
  250. There is a small chance that Frenetic may crash and leave you without a mouse
  251. until you restart Windows.  Crashes are unlikely, but there are a lot of
  252. permutations, and the Frenetic Screensaver is not guaranteed to never crash.
  253. Should this be a problem, you can have the cursor always displayed by
  254. de-selecting "Hide Mouse Cursor" on the Options screen under Control
  255. Panel/Desktop/Setup.

  257. Any screensaver as calculation-intensive as Frenetic may slow down other
  258. running tasks such as printing or faxes. If there is such a problem, you can
  259. try increasing the priority of the printing by running Print Manager from
  260. the Main group in Program Manager, and selecting the menu Options/Background
  261. Printing, and select High priority.

  263. Performance on 24-bit color systems is unknown.

  269. To uninstall Frenetic, delete the file frenetic.scr from your Windows
  270. directory.
