How to Perform Fractal WitchCraft
We've put lots of context sensitive help into Fractal WitchCraft (FW),
so you can get by without this manual. But, we think you will learn to cast
fractal spells a little faster if you read "Basics" and do the "Tutorial."

ShareWare
FW is not copy protected; you can give it away, and we hope you will. FW is
copyrighted; you may not sell it.
If you enjoy FW enough to use it, as we hope you will, then we ask that you
buy it. The price is $24.95, but if you can see the two letters after the
serial number, take a $5.00 discount.
FW is based on a new, and revolutionary algorithm, which took more hours to
perfect than we care to remember. While requiring nearly 100 times more
coding than the standard algorithm, it produces speed increases that
generally range between 2 and 100 fold.
Having discovered this wonderful agorithm, we wanted to share it as widely
as possible, so we put even more time into building a freindly and versitile
program. We hope you enjoy it, and hope you will pay your small share if you
do. For our part, we will continue to improve the aglorithm and the program.
Money from the Demo
FW can clone itself as a DEMO and errase the 2-letter discount password.
Give this away, on a network, to a store, or wherever it might catch peoples
attention. We Will Pay You the $5.00 refund for each copy it sells. We will
know your sales by the serial number the buyer must report.

Getting Started
Please install FW on your hard disk; it will work much better there.
A 3 Minute Installation:
1. Put the INSTALL disk in your floppy drive.
2. At the DOS prompt, type a:install or b:install as appropriate.
3. Additional floppies, can be installed in any order.
Typically your C: drive will now have a sub-directory c:\fw for the
program, manual and QWK images. Another sub-directory, c:\fw\pictures,
holds the slides. There should be an FW.BAT file in your path
(eg. c:\ 'root' directory).
Now, See the Show: Type fw show at any DOS prompt.
How to QUIT: / q n
Simply escape to the "MAIN menu", then hit q for quit and n for
no-don't save. (If the MAIN menu vanishes, hit <Esc> once more.)
About the Show:
You are seeing pre-calculated images, which have a fixed design and
only appear to change because the colors change. Most "slides" in the show
are magnifications of the Mandlebrot set or its related Julia sets.
Some images have been magnified more than a million million times, and
some need many thousands of calculations to find the color of a single pixel.
In spite of FW's speed, these images can take hours to calculate even with
a math coprocessor chip.
The slide show is controled by a PICTURE.SHW file that you can modify
with WordPerfect or any DOS TEXT editor. You can also control the show when
it's in progress. Hit the space bar to stop on a particular slide. Hit it
again to go on. While stopped, hit the number keys 0-5 to change how the
colors swirl. Hit up arrows to make them swirl faster and down arrows for
slower. It is also possible to permanently recolor slides.

Basics
Notation: <something> Indicates a singe keystroke.
For example <UpAw> means hit the Up-Arrow key.
The Four Most Important Things to Learn
1.<F1> gets HELP on your current activity.
2. <Esc> BACK-tracks to your previous activity.
3. / jumps to MAIN menu.
4. Always read the bottom two lines of a menu screen.
Escaping: <Esc> will do one of the following as appropriate:
1. Return you to the previous menu.
2. Stop the computation.
3. Abort a partially complete data entry.
4. Leave a Data-Entry Window and preserve changes.
If You Get Lost: Return to the MAIN menu.
You can always get back to the MAIN menu by hitting <Esc> a few times,
or / once. If the menu vanishes, hit <Esc> once more to make it
reappear. It says "MAIN menu" on the top line. Each menu is named on
its top line.
To Start the Picture Show:
1. Go to MAIN menu.
2. Type P G for Picture, Go.
If you don't see full screen pictures with swirling color, you need to
change to the \FW\PICTURES directory. Hit <Esc>, then C for Change,
then down arrow to that directory, then <Enter><Enter><Esc>, then G
for Go again.
Draw/Compute a Fractal from Scratch:
1. Go to MAIN menu.
2. Type D G for Draw, Go. Or: Type R F for Restart Fresh.
3. You are now in the Draw/Compute Window. The menu is off.
4. Hit <F1> and read the help. Then zoom into the Mandelbrot set.
5. <Esc> to the DRAW menu. From there use Controls and Rainbow.
Save an Image:
1. Go to MAIN menu.
2. Type F S A name Enter for File, Save, Automatic, your-file-name.
Set Image Coordinates:
1. Go to MAIN menu
2. Type D C S <F1> for Draw, Controls, Size/Magnification, help.

Technical Stuff
About Computer Hardware and Speed:
Some fractals take hours even with FW and a 486. For magnifications
of less than 1,000,000 FW uses the 32 bit integer multiplication provided by
the 386 or 486 processor itself, which is even faster than floating point
muliplication in the cooprocessor. On an 8088 or 286 it uses the
coprocessor if available and integer math otherwise. All this is done for
you automatically. Beyond a magnification of 1,000,000 computation slows
down drastically without a math coprocessor.
We suggest you do all your "visual wandering", especially through the
more complex regions, using the small (1/16 screen) images. Then generate
a medium (1/4 screen) image and use it for a final tune-up of control
parameters and colors before creating a large (full-screen) image. For the
very long computations, remember you can use the "Quit-Yes-Restart" feature
to complete your image in stages.
File Types:
An FW image can be stored three different ways: As a standard .PCX
file, As a .DWL file, or as a .DAT file. FW .PCX files can be read by PC
Paintbrush, WordPerfect, and many other programs. But FW cannot read PCX
files from other programs because they do not include the necessary
coordinate information. DWL files are the only type that contains dwell
information, and these can only be made for medium and small images. DAT
files contain no image, only the parameters needed to recompute the image,
but they are tiny so you can keep a lot of them.
How do you make a DEMO COPY of FW.
1. Make a normal DOS copy of your original diskettes.
2. Run FW as you usually do.
3. Select MAIN menu : Advanced Features : Making a Demo-version.
4. Put the COPY of your install diskette in your floppy drive.
5. Tell FW the floppy drive letter when it asks for it.
Directories:
FW looks for its own PCX, DWL and DAT files in the directory you start
it from. If it finds some, then it assumes you want to work in that directory.
If it doesn't then it checks it's FW__PATH file to find which directory you
last worked in, and changes to that one. You can change directories while
in FW; use MAIN menu F C.

Ordering Information
To purchase FW, send a valid serial number, and check for $24.95 to
SuperNatural Graphics
P.O. Box 9185
Berkeley, CA 94709
Note: If the serial number includes the two-letter password, you can
take a $5 discount, but to do so you must include the correct
password. If you do not include a valid serial number, then
the price is $29.95.
Please specify a disk size:
A. 1.44M 3.5" floppies
B. 720k 3.5" floppies
C. 1.2M 5.25" floppies
D. 360k 5.25" floppies
In all cases you will receive approximately 2.6 Megabytes of files because
FW includes a picture show.
