Welcome to Coming Events! for Windows
------------------------------------
Never lose track of birthdays, anniversaries or holidays again! Coming Events!
is the ultimate user-friendly popup application. Set it to remind you a day,
week or month ahead, and Voila! It pops up when you start Windows with a
list of Coming Events!
This is the list of distributed files (once they've been expanded):

EVENTS.HLP Coming Events! Help file - in same dir as EVENTS.EXE
SAMPLE.EVN sample data file - in same dir as EVENTS.EXE
README.TXT this file - in same dir as EVENTS.EXE

CTL3D.DLL dynamic link library file - in ...\WINDOWS\SYSTEM dir

VSVBX.VBX custom control file - in ...\WINDOWS\SYSTEM dir
VSVBX.LIC distribution license - in ...\WINDOWS\SYSTEM dir
INSTALLATION:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This app requires VBRUN300.DLL (not included in the distribution
archive, but available from most files BBS, or from the US Microsoft Download
Service at 1(206) 936-6735).
Close all Windows applications that may be running, so that the Setup program
will have exclusive control of Windows. The Setup program attempts to install
the newest versions of some files that you may already have on your computer.
If any of those files are in use (because there's an open application that
uses one or more of them), you'll receive an error message from Windows saying
it could not install one or more of the files. If you receive error messages,
close and restart Windows holding down the [Shift] key while restarting. This
will prevent Windows from running any applications in your Startup group, and
will maximize your chances of a successful installation.
Run SETUP.EXE from the File.. ..Run menu item and follow the directions.
See your Windows manual for instructions on how to create a Program Manager
icon for Coming Events!
Note: Coming Events! includes a Print feature that allows you to print the
list of items displayed in the Main List. You must have the "Arial" TrueType
font that comes wuth Windows installed on your system in order to use this
feature.
IF THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM FAILS:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can manually expand the files using the EXPAND.EXE utility that comes with
Windows. There are several files that are required by the installation progam
but are not necessary to install on your hard drive. Place only those files
listed in the distribution list (above) into an empty directory. In a DOS
session, expand each file from the DOS command line. You'll need to provide
the target file name for each file. For instance, to expand VSVBX.VB_, you'll
type:
EXPAND.EXE VSVBX.VB_ VSVBX.VBX
When all of the files are expanded, place them in the directories indicated in
the distribution list above.
UNINSTALLING Coming Events!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming Events! installs it's proprietary files into the application directory
(default: C:\EVENTS), and the entire directory me be deleted. You may also
remove EVENTS.INI from you ..\WINDOWS directory. There are several additional
files which are installed into your ..\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. These files
may be used by applications other than Coming Events! so be extremely
selective with their removal. A suggested method is to remove them to a
temporary directory until it can be established that all of the other
applications on your hard drive run successfully without them. These
files are:
CTL3D.DLL CSOPT.VBX
MMSYSTEM.DLL CMDIALOG.VBX
MSAFINX.DLL CSCALNDR.VBX
QPRO200.DLL CSSPIN.VBX
VSVBX.LIC THREED.VBX
VSVBX.VBX
PROGRAM START-UP:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The setup program creates a Program Manager group with a Coming Events! icon.
Start Coming Events! by double-clicking on the icon (or ...\EVENTS\EVENTS.EXE
in File Manager). If you have not registered Coming Events! a popup screen
will appear and will pause for 5 seconds. Press the "Register" button if you
have received your registration code, or the "Ok" button if you have not.
This screen will no longer appear after Coming Events! is registered.
THE BASICS:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming Events! keeps track of any upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, special
dates or appointments you tell it to. The interface is fairly simple to
navigate, and as such no discussion is provided. However, there are a few
points that are not as readily understandable. Help is always available by
pressing F1, accessing the Help menu from the Main Window, or clicking on any
visible Help button.
Double-click on any item in the Main List (or highlight it and press the "View"
button to see the particulars of that item in the Add/View Window. Press the
"Word Proc" button and Coming Events! will start your word processor (or
Notepad if none is indicated in the Configuration Window) and insert your name,
address, the date, and the name and address of the highlighted item into a new
document. Coming Events! uses the information in the "User Info" section of
the Configuration Window for your name and address.
Coming Events! is extremely configurable. You may reach the Configure Window
from the File... Configure menu item or by right-mouse clicking on any area
of the Main Window. And of course, online Help is always available.
Coming Events! does not start itself. You must double-click on it's icon or
File Manager listing, or enable it from a 3rd-party scheduling program, such
as the Norton Scheduler (packaged as part of Norton Desktop for Windows) or
METZ Scheduler (packaged with METZ Task Manager). However, if you register
Coming Events! you can configure it to start automatically every time Windows
starts and to close after a specified amount of time.
I hope you enjoy Coming Events! It is meant to help you avoid those
embarrassing moments when you've forgotten someone's birthday or anniversary,
but you have to use it for it to work!
