Information Regarding Halftones and Gray Scales for PostScript Users:
=====================================================================
Your new LaserJet 4M Plus PostScript printer is equipped with a new Enhanced
Halftone technology which provides greatly improved print quality in the areas
of gray scales and images. Although this technology provides enhanced printed
output in allmost all cases, this technology is not compatible with previous
PostScript products. If you find that your printed gray scales are not
acceptable, you can set up the printer to use the "Spot Function Halftone"
used in previous LaserJet 4 series PostScript printers.
To set up the printer to use the Spot Function Halftone, send the file
"spotf_ht.ps" to the printer before sending your print job to the printer.
This file is located on the PostScript Printer Software for Windows 3.1
driver diskette. To send the file to the printer, follow these steps:
1. Open up the Windows Control Panel, and double click on "Printers."
2. Select "HP LaserJet 4/4M Plus PS 600."
3. Click on the "Setup" button.
4. Click on the "Font Downloader" button.
5. Click on the "Other" button.
6. Click on the "Download PostScript file" button and click "OK."
7. Insert your PostScript Printer Software for Windows 3.1 diskette into
drive a: (substitute the correct path and drive if necessary).
8. Enter the file name "a:\spotf_ht.ps".
9. Click on the "Open" button.
10. Return to your application and print.
If you would like to download the file without exiting your Windows
application, substitute the following steps for steps 1, and 2 above:
1. Pull down the "File" menu.
2. Select "Print Setup".
Next, continue the download procedure by following steps 3 through 9 above.
You can also download the file from the DOS command line by executing the
following DOS command:
copy /b a:\spotf_ht.ps lpt1:
Substitute your correct disk drive and printer port as necessary.
After you have printed using the Spot Function Halftone file, you may wish to
resume printing using your printer's enhanced halftone capabilities. To do
this, download the file "ehan_ht.ps" to the printer. This file is located on
your PostScript Printer Software for Windows 3.1 driver diskette. To send this
file to the printer, follow the steps outlined above.
Note: If you have less than 8 MB of RAM installed in the printer, you must
download the "spotf_ht.ps" file AHEAD of each print job you wish to print
using the Spot Function Halftone. If you have 8 MB or more of RAM installed
in the printer, and if you have RESOURCE SAVE = ON or AUTO (see the MEM CONFIG
menu at the printer control panel), you will only have to download this file
once, and the Spot Function Halftone will remain in effect until the printer
is powered off, a control panel reset occurs, or until the printer is set back
up to use the Enhanced Halftone (see below).
Note: If you have less than 8 MB of RAM installed in the printer, or if you
have RESOURCE SAVE = OFF (see the MEM CONFIG menu at the printer control panel),
you must send your print job to the printer IMMEDIATELY after downloading the
"spotf_ht.ps" file. If another print job is sent to the printer after your
file has been download, but before you send your print job, it may cause the
halftone definition be deleted.
