  64. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  68. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version 31.V1.50 for
  69. Windows 3.1 / 3.11:
  70.  
  71. 1.  Choose the "Control Panel" from the Main Group in Program Manager.
  72. 2.  Choose the "Printers" icon from the Control Panel window.
  73. 3.  The Printers dialog box appears. Choose the "Add>>" button.
  74. 4.  The "List of Printers" dialog box appears. Select "Install Unlisted
  75.     or Updated Printer" (first line in list).
  76. 5.  Choose the "Install" button.
  77. 6.  Insert the driver disk with the HPPCL5E printer driver (Disk 1 of
  78.     the HP LaserJet Printer System) into your flexible disk drive and
  79.     specify the corresponding drive, OR enter the drive and directory
  80.     where the driver files are stored.
  81. 7.  At the "Add Unlisted or Updated Printer" dialog box, highlight one
  82.     of the available printers: "HP LaserJet 4/4M", "HP LaserJet 4L",
  83.     "HP LaserJet 4ML", "HP LaserJet 4P/4MP", "HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX",
  84.     "HP LaserJet 4 Plus/4M Plus", "HP LaserJet 4V/4MV" and press
  85.      [Enter]. If you are asked whether or not to install the new
  86.      HPPCL5E3.DLL file, press the "Yes" button to continue the 
  87.      installation.
  88. 8.  Choose the "Connect" button.
  89. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the "Ports:" list box and
  90.     press [Enter].
  91. 10. Choose the "Setup" button.
  92. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to reflect
  93.     your printer's configuration.
  94. 12. Choose OK.
  95. 13. Choose the "Set as Default Printer" button.

  100. SYSTEM UPDATE INFORMATION (Changes to Version 31.V1.50 since 31.V1.30)
  101.

  104. Aldus PageMaker
  105.      The PageMaker set width feature allows changes to be made to the
  106. size and spacing of specified characters. This feature is not supported
  107. by the LaserJet 4 family printers when rendering the TrueType fonts
  108. which are internal to the printer. The PCL driver now directs Windows
  109. to render the font and download it to the printer whenever any
  110. application applies changes, such as set width, to fonts internal to a
  111. LaserJet 4 family printer.
  112.  
  113. Aldus PageMaker
  114.     If you experience problems when printing rotated, skewed, or
  115. mirrored images with Aldus PageMaker 5.0, contact Aldus Corporation to
  116. order their software patch "ALDIM3.DLL". The Aldus patch in combination
  117. with the 31.V1.50 HP PCL driver correct this problem. The patch can be
  118. downloaded from the Aldus bulletin board or from the Aldus forums on
  119. America On-line or CompuServe.
  120.  
  121. Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Support
  122.      The HP LaserJet Printing System installation program has been
  123. enhanced to allow installation for Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Versions
  124. of the HP Printing Systems included with HP LaserJets built previous to
  125. the release of Windows for Workgroups 3.11 do not support installation
  126. into the WFW 3.11 environment. See the "HOW TO OBTAIN ADDITIONAL
  127. INFORMATION ABOUT HP SERVICES" section below for assistance in obtaining
  128. the HP LaserJet Printing System, 31.V1.50.
  129.      Many customers have experienced printing problems in WFW 3.11.
  130. Among these are:
  131.      1. The job in the queue goes to 0 bytes and will not delete.
  132.      2. The printing process locks up without completing the job.
  133. This problem results from the Print Manager files for WFW 3.11 being
  134. overwritten by Print Manager files from some other version of Windows,
  135. especially Windows for Workgroups 3.1. Several vendors have included
  136. earlier versions of Print Manager in their products, including: PC
  137. vendors, printer vendors, etc.
  138.  
  139. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  140.                        IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE
  141.   The following workaround is provided to assist customers who are
  142.   experiencing the problems described above and suspect that their
  143.   original Print Manager files that have been written over by an
  144.   installation utility.
  145.   Hewlett-Packard provides this workaround in good faith and is not
  146.   responsible for problems associated with it's use. Hewlett-Packard
  147.   will only assist customers who have incurred this problem as a result
  148.   of installing products purchased from Hewlett-Packard.
  149.  
  150.   The original Print Manager file set included with Windows for
  151.   Workgroups 3.11 is as follows:
  152.     Compressed Files:
  153.       PRINTMAN.EX_     11-01-93
  154.       PRINTMAN.HL_     11-01-93
  155.   These files will likely be found on Disk 3 and Disk 4 of the Windows
  156.   for Workgroups 3.11 package. Verify that different Print Manager files
  157.   are found in the "Windows" directory of a WFW 3.11 installation before
  158.   replacing them with the originals. Use the "EXPAND.EXE" utility to
  159.   decompress the print manager files into the "Windows" directory.
  160.

  172.      On-line help files are included for the HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER and
  173. the HP font installer screens. Choose Help from these screens to access
  174. the HELP information.

  176. Aldus PageMaker 5.0
  177.     See the SYSTEM UPDATE INFORMATION section above for important
  178. information regarding PageMaker support with this driver.
  179.  
  180. Graphics, Error 20s, and Print Performance
  181.      If you encounter print difficulties, Error 20s, or slow performance
  182. with any application when using in HP-GL/2 Graphics Mode, it is
  183. recommended that you change the Graphics Mode to RASTER in the HP PCL
  184. printer driver and try your print job again. Access the Printers Icon
  185. through the Control Panel. Select the LaserJet 4 family printer driver,
  186. the Setup button, the Options dialogue box, and Graphics Mode.
  187.  
  188. Corel Draw Printing Performance
  189.      The options below are made available to assist you in improving
  190. print speed. Print performance, however, is largely dependent on
  191. information in the graphics document being printed.
  192.  
  193. 1. Print Performance
  194.      For best printing performance in CorelDRAW, it is recommended
  195. that you change the Graphics Mode to RASTER in the HP PCL printer
  196. driver and try your print job again. See the Graphics, Error 20s,...
  197. paragraph above for assistance.
  198.  
  199. 2. Corel Draw 3.0: Improve graphics performance.
  200.    a) Open CORELDRW.INI with a text editor. The CORELDRW.INI is in the
  201.       DRAW subdirectory for Corel Draw 3.0b or later.
  202.         e.g. c:\corel30\coreldrw\draw\coreldrw.ini
  203.    b) Go the section labeled: [CDrawConfig].
  204.    c) At the end of this section, enter the following line (exactly as
  205.       shown): UseClippingForFills=0
  206.    d) Save and close the CORELDRW.INI file.
  207.    e) Restart Corel Draw.
  208.  
  209. 3. Corel Draw 4.0 and 5.0 - Improve graphics and scanned image printing
  210.    performance.
  211.    a) Open CORELDRW.INI with a text editor. The CORELDRW.INI file is
  212.       found in the COREL40\CONFIG subdirectory for Corel 40 and 5.0.
  213.         e.g. c:\corel40\config\coreldrw.ini
  214.    b) Go the section labeled:      [Config]
  215.    c) At the end of this section, enter the following line (exactly as
  216.       shown): UseClippingForFills=0
  217.    d) Save and close the CORELDRW.INI file.
  218.  
  219.    The setting below impacts raster graphics only.
  220.  
  221.    a) Open the CORELPRN.INI file with a text editor. The CORELPRN.INI
  222.       file is also located in the CONFIG sub-directory.
  223.    b) Go to the section labeled:   [Config]
  224.    c) Find the following line:     DumpEntireBitmap=0.
  225.       Changed to read:             DumpEntireBitmap=1.
  226.    d) Save and close the CORELPRN.INI file
  227.    e) RESTART Corel Draw.
  228.                 
  229.    Changing this entry from 0 to 1 allows Corel Draw to send raster data
  230.    in blocks rather than line by line. This should improve processing
  231.    time of graphic intense files and should improve memory performance.

  235. FEATURES of the HP LASERJET 4 FAMILY PRINTER DRIVER
  236.  
  237. ************************************************************************
  238.  
  239. HP-GL/2 Mode
  240.      Support for HP-GL/2 is in the HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER. Under the
  241. Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of "Graphics Mode" is
  242. available. Two options are present: HP-GL/2 or Raster. The first choice
  243. enables both HP-GL/2 and raster printing which optimizes print
  244. performance. The second choice uses raster only. Default settings for
  245. "Graphics Mode" optimize print speed for the given printer. The default
  246. graphics mode is set to raster for the HP LaserJet 4L. The default mode
  247. is set to HP-GL/2 for all other HP LaserJet 4 family printers. Default
  248. settings for "Graphics Mode" optimize print speed for the given printer.
  249.  
  250. 300 DPI Compatibility (Supported on 31.V1.26 and later)
  251.     Additional compatibility has been added to this driver to insure
  252. compatibility between documents printed with this driver and documents
  253. printed with the HP LaserJet III Family drivers. This compatibility is
  254. automatically enabled when a document is printed with the resolution
  255. field set to 300 DPI.
  256.  
  257. Graphics Quality
  258.      Depending upon which dpi (dots per inch) selection you choose,
  259. there are different graphic resolution settings available. The actual
  260. settings are denoted by the descriptive terms of High, Medium and Low
  261. rather than the actual dpi number. When the driver is set to 600 dpi
  262. mode, the settings available are 600, 300, and 150 dpi. When the driver
  263. is set to 300 dpi mode, the settings available are 300, 150, and 75 dpi.
  264.  
  265. Internal Intellifont typefaces.
  266.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 4 family
  267. printers are supported in the 19U (Windows) symbol set.
  268.  
  269. EconoMode
  270.   (Supported by the LaserJet 4L, 4ML, 4P/4MP, 4 Plus/4M Plus & 4V/4MV Printers)
  271.     Support for EconoMode is in printer driver versions 31.V1.20 or
  272. later within the Options Dialog.  There are three options available for
  273. the supported LaserJets (except the 4L and 4ML), Printer Default, ON,
  274. OFF. Printer Default uses the current setting on the printer (not the
  275. default). There are only two options available for the 4L and 4ML, ON or 
  276. OFF. With EconoMode enabled the output will resemble draft mode, using
  277. fewer dots in order to conserve toner.
  278.  
  279. Print Density
  280.   (Supported by the LaserJet 4L, 4ML, 4P/4MP, & 4 Plus/4M Plus)
  281.     Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog.
  282.     Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired
  283.     density.  The density range is one (lightest) to five
  284.     (darkest).
  285.  
  286. REt (Resolution Enhancement technology)
  287.     REt refines the print quality of characters and graphics by
  288. smoothing the fine gradations along the angles and curves of the printed
  289. image. The driver default is "Printer Default". The printer default is
  290. "Medium". Other options override the printer setting.
  291.  
  292. Resource Saving
  293.  (Dialog support is only provided for the LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX)
  294.     This feature, added to the main setup dialog box, allows the user to
  295. tell the printer driver how much memory is set aside for each printer
  296. personality (PCL and PostScript). This memory is used for saving printer
  297. resources between printer language switching. The range is 0KB to
  298. 99900KB. For all other printers which support Resource Saving, it can be
  299. set from the front control panel of the printer.
  300.  
  301. Version Information Resources
  302.     This feature, in printer driver versions 31.V1.20 and later, is
  303. added to the printer driver and its dynamic link libraries. This helps
  304. to eliminate a possible mismatch of driver and driver resource files
  305. when installing previous drivers. If a potential mismatch is detected
  306. during driver installation, a dialog box that contains a warning is
  307. displayed with the option to replace the files.
  308.  
  309. Custom Media Size
  310.     Custom Media is also supported by this driver for the HP LaserJet
  311. 4ML, 4P/4MP, and 4 Plus/4M Plus. The size of the custom media in most
  312. cases must be set in both the application's page setup and the driver
  313. setup. For more information about minimum and maximum page size, see
  314. your user's manual.
  315.  
  316. Cartridge Support (Removed 31.V1.26 and later)
  317.     This driver does not have built-in support for HP font cartridges.
  318. Font cartridge support is still available by:
  319.  
  320.     1) Installing the fonts for the font cartridge from the
  321.        autofont support disk shipped with the font cartridge
  322.     2) North American customer can contact Hewlett-Packard's
  323.        Driver Distribution Center.

  333. Font Installer which is accessed from the "Control Panel", "Printers",
  334. "Setup", "Fonts...", "Add Fonts..." option in Windows 3.1. Detailed
