  31. PROFESSIONAL EDITION INTRODUCTION
  32. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  33. Total Recorder is a sound recording and playing program. It records
  34. analog sound digitized by a sound card, as well as sound generated,
  35. or requested, by other computer programs, such as RealPlayer, Windows
  36. Media Player, Quick Time, WinAmp, and many others. Recorded sound is
  37. saved in wave-file format or you can use external programs to save
  38. recorded sound using MP3 or Ogg Vorbis format.

  40. For example, you can use Total Recorder to record:
  41. - audio from the Internet, either audio files or live streams
  42. - music from a game program
  43. - a conversation, if you use an Internet telephony program.
  44.  
  45. Total Recorder uses a virtual sound driver to capture the sound output
  46. from another program. By installing this driver, and setting this
  47. device as the default, different sound reproducing programs send their
  48. output stream to Total Recorder's driver and not to the driver of a
  49. real device. Total Recorder then passes the information to the sound
  50. card driver.

  52. Total Recorder has a built-in scheduler. This allows you to
  53. automatically record a show at a given time for later playback or you
  54. can use the scheduler as an alarm. Note that this latter function does
  55. not require registration.

  57. In addition to the features above, Total Recorder Professional Edition  
  58. provides many others, such as the ability to edit sound data, advanced 
  59. scheduler settings, and much more.

  62. WHAT'S NEW WITH VERSION 4.4?

  64. In addition to maintenance, Version 4.4 includes the following changes:

  67. - The ability to change the sound level in MP3-formatted files without

  73. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  75. To use Total Recorder, you need the following:

  82. PROGRAM RESTRICTIONS

  84. Total Recorder cannot record sound reproduced by DOS programs
  85. executing in DOS sessions.

  87. Total Recorder can record only one output and one input sound stream at
  88. a time. If a sound card allows simultaneous output of several
  89. wave-streams and can mix these streams itself, then Total Recorder can
  90. only record one of these streams.

  99. Total Recorder is shipped via the Internet, as a self-extracting
  100. (tr44pe.exe) or regular (tr44pe.zip) archive, and consists of the
  101. files listed below. The following table indicates each file name, a
  102. description, and the environments in which each file is required.

  130. SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS NT

  132. To install Total Recorder on Windows NT, you need the "Load and Unload
  133. Device Drivers" user right. Normally, only administrative users have
  134. this right.

  136. To use the Total Recorder program, you do not need any special rights.
  137. However, the Total Recorder setup program changes settings only for the
  138. user who installed the program. Any other user must manual set the
  139. Total Recorder driver as a preferred device (see
  140. "Setting Preferred Devices").

  143. SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS 2000 and WINDOWS XP
  144. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  145. Windows 2000 and Windows XP are members of the Windows NT product family.
  146. All of the information in the previous section ("Installing Total Recorder
  147. in a Windows NT Environment") applies to Windows 2000 and to Windows XP.

  149. If you are planning to upgrade your Windows 95/98/ME system to Windows
  150. 2000 or Windows XP, you must take the following steps:
  151. 1. Before upgrading your Windows environment, uninstall Total Recorder.
  152. 2. After the upgrade is complete, reinstall Total Recorder.
  153. 3. Re-register Total Recorder. You should have your registration 
  154.    information available.
  155.  
  156. Note: Total Recorder will not work if you simply upgrade your Windows
  157. environment to Windows 2000 or XP without taking the steps described above.

  159. If you are moving from NT to either Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you do
  160. not have to remove and re-install Total Recorder.

  163. INSTALLATION NOTES
  164. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  165. Note that Version 4.4 cannot coexist on the same machine with any 
  166. previous version (1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 4.0, 4.1,
  167. 4.2 or 4.3). 
  168. The different editions (Standard Edition, Professional Edition and 
  169. Developer Edition) of Total Recorder cannot be installed on the same 
  170. computer.

  172. Follow this procedure to install Total Recorder on your PC:
  173.  
  174. 1. Download the self-extracting archive tr44pe.exe
  175.    (http://www.highcriteria.com/download/tr44pe.exe) and run it.
  176.  
  177.    or

  179.    Download the regular ZIP archive tr44pe.zip
  180.    (http://www.highcriteria.com/download/tr44pe.zip). Unzip it and
  181.    run Setup.exe.  Note that you must unzip the entire archive not
  182.    just the Setup.exe file.

  184.    If you have a previous version installed, you are prompted to
  185.    uninstall it. Press "OK" to continue with the installation. Press
  186.    "Cancel" if you want to exit the installation program without
  187.    installing the software.
  188.  
  189.    The installation program creates a directory for Total Recorder,
  190.    copies all of the files to that directory, creates a Program Group
  191.    called Total Recorder, installs a driver, and sets it as the default
  192.    device for both playback and recording.

  194. 2. After installing Total Recorder, you must restart Windows.
  195.

  197. ADDING SUPPORT FOR OGG VORBIS FORMAT TO TOTAL RECORDER

  200. Total Recorder supports the Ogg Vorbis format by using an external 
  201. dynamic link library named vorbishc.dll. You can obtain this library,  
  202. free of charge, through High Criteria's web site. To add support for  
  203. Ogg Vorbis to Total Recorder, or to review new versions of vorbishc.dll,  
  204. go to http://www.highcriteria.com/tr_ext_ogg.htm and follow the 
  205. instructions.

  208. ADDING SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS MEDIA AUDIO FORMAT TO TOTAL RECORDER

  210. For Total Recorder to support Windows Media Audio formats, you should 
  211. either:
  212. - install Windows Media Player 9 series, or
  213. - download and install a special redistribution kit. You can obtain this
  214. kit free of charge through High Criteria's web site
  215. (http://www.highcriteria.com/tr_ext_wma.htm).

  218.                         REGISTERING TOTAL RECORDER
  219. =======================================================================
  220. After installing and verifying the program works properly, you should
  221. obtain a registration key from High Criteria. If the program is
  222. unregistered then your recordings are limited to 40 seconds each and
  223. you can use the scheduler only as an alarm.
  224.  
  225. Notes: 
  226.  
  227. 1. Different editions of Total Recorder have different registration 
  228. keys. For example, you cannot use the registration key for Total 
  229. Recorder Standard Edition in either Total Recorder Professional Edition 
  230. or in Total Recorder Developer Edition.

  232. 2. You cannot use your Version 1.x, 2.x or 3.x registration key with 
  233. Version 4.4. The registration key for Version 4.0 and later is valid 
  234. for Version 4.4.

  236. To register Total Recorder Professional Edition:
  237.  
  238. 1. Receive the registration key.
  239.  
  240.    Follow the instructions given on High Criteria Inc.'s web site at
  241.    the following address: http://www.highcriteria.com/products.htm.

  243. 2. Select "Help" - "Registration". Type in the same name you used to
  244.    obtain the registration key and type your registration key. Note 
  245.    that after registration this menu item is not accessible.

  248.                         UNINSTALLING TOTAL RECORDER

  250. To uninstall Total Recorder, use "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel",
  251. "Add/Remove Programs". The program remains in memory until you reboot.
