1. General Notes
================
IMPORTANT!
You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
caused as a consequence.
Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
features provided by the SHOWTIME PLUS, if the other components of
your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
also comply with the specifications of the SHOWTIME PLUS.
(Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
SHOWTIME PLUS can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).
2. Hardware configuration
=========================
PCI bus:
Especially important is the correct configuration of your PCI mother-
board. The PCI Interrupt A (INT A) must be assigned to one of the
available system interrupts (e.g. 10).
1. Please check in the manual of your motherboard whether a jumper
needs to be set. Jumpers are often used to assign system interrupts
to either an ISA of PCI slot. Assign the interrupt to the PCI slot
to be used with the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS.
2. Start the SETUP program of your PC and assign the system inter-
rupt to INT A for the PCI expansion slot the SPEA SHOWTIME Plus will
be installed in. For newer motherboards you can also use the Trigger
method for setting the interrupt. Select 'Level' or 'Auto' for the
slot you will use.
Most recent motherboards work with a PLUG & PLAY BIOS. If you have
such a PCI system, its BIOS will do the interrupt configuration
automatically.
VL bus:
The configuration of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS VL will automatically be
started during the reboot after the software installation with the
program STINIT.
Select a free system interrupt and confirm your selection with the
ENTER key. We recommend interrupt #10 for the VL board.
Note: Reserved interrupts will be marked by the program.
Note:
-----
At the end of the installation, some hardware tests will proceed. If
problems with the configuration occure, the installation will abort
with an error massage. In this case, please proof your system again.
To run the test again, call <drive>:\\SPEA\SHOWTIME\STTEST
If you get an error massage while testing
Composite-Video and
SVHS-Video
no input source is connected to the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS VideoIn.
Several hardware tests are performed at the end of the installation
procedure. The installation will be aborted with an error message
if the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS could not be successfully installed in your
system. In this case, check again your system configuration.
The hardware test may be started again by entering the following
command:
\SPEA\SHOWTIME\STTEST
The test options
Composite Video and
SVHS-Video
will always display an error message if no device is connected to
the Video In connector of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS. This is not a
misfunction of the board.
3.1 Installation under DOS
==========================
Note:
You need the DOS installation only, if you have no Windows installed.
Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and
directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
install driver software.
Start the installation from
a) Disk with b) MG-CD with
A:\ <CD drive>:
SETUP SPEAINST
After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
to achieve this are described in the manuals.
VESA MODES:
-----------
VESA modes are integrated in the graphics card BIOS.
3.2 Installation under Windows
==============================
Start Windows at the VGA graphics mode.
Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
Manager. Then enter:
a) (Disk) b) (MG-CD)
A:\SETUP <CD drive>:SPEAINST
Note:
The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS allows the use of hardware accelerated video
functions only with a limitted number of resolutions and refresh
rates. To use this functionality, start V7SETUP from the SPEA group,
activate the 'Enable Video Hardware support' button and select the
desired resolution. Digital videos may be displayed after Windows
has been restarted. The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS doesn't support Video
MPEG playback
3.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
================================
Please choose the OS/2 Warp driver for the ET4000/W32, /W32i, W32p
chip.
ATTENTION:
---------
If your SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS have a BIOS version 2.00 or higher, you have
after installing the Warp graphics driver to replace the file
\os2\dll\tliw32pm.dll. Therefor you can use the INSTALL.CMD at the
\SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\OS2 directory.
Please note:
------------
These drivers support the graphic functions of the SPEA SHOWTIME
PLUS under OS/2 WPS and WIN-OS/2, but do not support the hardware
accelarated video functions.
3.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
========================================
The driver for Windows NT 3.5 supports only higher resolutions for your
graphics display. It does not support video playback!
This driver and a readme, you can find at the Media Gallery CD at
the directory: \SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\NT.
3.5 Notes for Use with Windows 95
=================================
The installation is the same as described in section 3.2 (Windows).
The differing requirements for the operating system are automatically
accounted by the installation program.
Note:
If you have problems to play a VideoCD with Windows95, it should be
possible, that Windows has installed a driver, witch don't support this
feature. Please install a DOS real mode driver (config.sys) and the
\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE file (autoexec.bat).
Now it should be possible too, that you have to disable the 32bit
access for drives.
3.6. SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS and UNIX operating systems
==================================================
The company
Delix Computer GmbH
Hasenberg Str. 113
70176 Stuttgart
GERMANY
Tel. +49 711-6362220
Email: support@delix.de
sells for the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS for UNIX operating systems
(SCO, LINUX....) graphics and videocapture driver.
The playback of Video CD's und MPEG's is up to now not supported.
If it is available, this software will be available via this
company.
3.7. Other drivers
==================
Drivers for the program 3D Studio 4 are a part of the program 3D Studio.
Please choose the chip: Tseng Labs ET4000/W32.
Driver for DOS AutoCAD version 10, 11, 12 are available at our
mailbox.
4. Programming Interfaces
=========================
4.1. The MCI Interface
======================
THE SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS supports the Microsoft standard MPEG playback
MCI instruction set. This set is documented in the file
SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\DOCUMCI\mcimpeg.doc.
A MCI capture driver is not yet available. Please use the VfW SDK for
this time.
4.1. The OM1 Interface
======================
A preliminary version of this driver is available at the directory
SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\OM1. This interface is documented in the OM1
specification 1.00p. See the file OM1_100p.doc.
The Video In input is not supported with this interface.
5. MPEG PLAYBACK configuration
==============================
5.1 windows configuration
=========================
If you open the Windows mediaplayer (mplayer.exe) and you choose DEVICE
SPEA MPEG... and you choose a MPEG file, you can configure the SPEA MCI
driver (DEVICE CONFIGURATION):
- Normal Transfer: If you want to play a MPEG with more than 168kb/s and
you get green rectangles while playing this file, you should set the slider
2 steps to the right.
Don't use the other slider.
5.2. DOS configuration
======================
At the file c:\spea\showtime\showtime.ini are 2 parameters possible:
IRQ=10 (only VL version)
NormalTransfer=6
This parameter sets the size (x1000kb) of the normal transfer buffer.
range: 6...15
standard: 6
5.3. green rectangles while starting to play a MPEG
===================================================
Some OptiBase encoded files seem to cause green blocks in the video
during playback on the SHOWTIME PLUS. If when encoding these files
the OptiBase VideoCD encoding option is used this seems to correct
the problem.
An other way to remove this bug from your MPEG file
is the program SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\MPEGFIX\MPEGFIX.EXE.
On files with high data rates green blocks may also occur - increasing
the "normal transfer buffer" size in the configure menu may help (slide
bar to right).
5.4. MCI driver SPEAMCI.DRV
============================
version:1.21
fixed Bugs:
- no audio at the first Stream
- noises while opening the first MPEG Stream removed
- instead of freezing the last video frame, the window got black
- while using MCI_CLOSE, the window was closed too, if it was not
the right handle
- problems while opening the driver at fast PC's
- under win95, the driver was loading for several times
Known problems
1. If DOS box full-screen is activated while MPEG active, some PCs
will hang.
2. Driver is not stable in Windows95 on some VL motherboards
In this case use MCISPEA.DRV version 1.18.
(rename the file CD:\spea\install\STPLUS\MCISPEA.118 to *.DRV
and copy it to the windows system directory)
5.5. MPEG output via SPEA Crunch It to TV
==========================================
With this driver (v 1.21) and the SPEA Crunch It it is possible to
display a MPEG to the Video out of the SPEA Crunch It (within
Windows 3.1 & Windows 95).
Configuration:
Within the windows mediaplayer:
- open a MPEG
- choose Device
- choose Configure
Now you'll get the possibility to mark Chrunch It. If you
marked this parameter, the TV out via SPEA Crunch It is possible.
Notes:
- You can use this possibility only, when displaying the MPEG
(not the whole graphics) in interlaced mode, choosed in the same
configuration window.
- It isn't possible to display the whole PC screen contents to TV,
only the MPEG window.
6. Choosing a Monitor
======================
As already mentioned above, the graphic monitor used with the SPEA
SHOWTIME PLUS must comply to the specifications of this board. Only
then can the full functionality of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS be used.
During software installation you will asked for the maximum hori-
zontal frequency of your monitor. This entry is only of importance
if you use one the optional DOS drivers mentioned above (e.g the
AutoCAD driver). In this case, add the following entry to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file :
CALL C:\SPEA\SHOWTIME\INIT.BAT STMODE
The selection of refresh rates under Windows is only done with the
utility program V7SETUP.
*** IMPORTANT ***
Please only select parameters that your monitor is specified for.
Your monitor may be seriously damaged, if it is constantly driven
with parameters which are not within the range of its specification.
If you change your monitor you have to compare the specification
and, if necessary, to change the resolutions / refresh rates using
STMODE!
8. Known Restrictions
======================
(1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
board simultaneously in a PC.
If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
the SHOWTIME PLUS, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
PC first.
(2) The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS supports audio only for VideoCD and MPEG files,
but not the sound of *.avi or *.wav files.
In this case a sound board like the V7-media fx must be additionally
installed in your system.
(3) If you use Windows for Workgroups and start it without network sup-
port ( 'WIN /N' ), then it may happen that Windows does not start
correctly when low display resolutions are used. This limitation
does not exist when Windows is started with 'WIN'.
6. Corrections to the Manual
=============================
(1) With this software release it is possible to play CD-I's under DOS
and Windows with the following restrictions:
At the right edge 48 pixels will be cut. If there is a picture moving
from the right edge to the left, green arrays will appear. This areas
are to be seen up to the next I-frame. This effects are due to hardware
limitations.
With the SPEA Media Station you can NOT use any interactive parts of a
CD-I. You can only play the CD-I files.
CD's, with the Video CD or the CD-I/Video CD label you can still
play with the known quality.
Note:
Not all CD-drives, which are able to play VideoCD, can play CDi.
(2) We are offering the program SPEA Media Station for DOS too.
With this program "MSTATION.EXE" you can play Video CD's, CD-I
(for restrictions see above (1) ), MPEG files like *.MPG, *.VPG and
the Autodesk flic-files *.flc, *.fli. After the installation you will
find more information to this program at the file
\SPEA\SHOWTIME\MSTATION.DOC.
(3) The option "HIGHSCAN" may not be used with the memory manager
EMM386.EXE.
(4) Do not use SMARTDRIVE.EXE for the CD drive.
(5) For the CD drive, use the driver MSCDEX.EXE v.2.23 or higher
(6) A CD-ROM drive is obviously necessary in a real multi-media system.
As the VideoCD format is rather new compared to data format, your
CD drive may not be able to read data from a VideoCD. Updating the
driver software for your drive may help in this case.
The following CD-ROM drives have been found to operate without
problems when the SHOWTIME PLUS had been tested in our Quality
Assurance department for win3.1x:
Sony CDU-33a Sony SLCD Device Driver Vers. 171a
Mitsumi FX 001D CD-ROM Device Driver MTMCDAS Vers. 01.1b
Panasonic CR 562b/CR 563c CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
Matsushita CR-562-x CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
Toshiba 3401 Future Domain CD-ROM Device Vers. 2.21/260
(More drives will be tested)
(7) About 550 KB conventional memory is required to successfully
read VideoCDs. Error messages like "CD ROM drive can not be read" or
others that describe a misfunction of the SPEA MCI drivers may be
displayed if not enough memory is available.
In this case, remove all drivers not essentially necessary for the
operation of your system from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, then re-
start your system.
