  23. 1. General Notes
  24. ================
  25.   IMPORTANT!
  26.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  27.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  28.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  29.   caused as a consequence.

  31.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  32.   features provided by the V7-MERCURY P-64 V, if the other components of
  33.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  34.   also comply with the specifications of the V7-MERCURY P-64 V.
  35.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  36.   V7-MERCURY P-64 V can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  37.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).

  39. 2. Installation
  40. ===============
  41.   The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
  42.   SPEA installation disks and the SPEA SuperCD ('SuperCD').
  43.  
  44. 2.1 Installation under DOS
  45. ==========================
  46. Note:
  47.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and 
  48.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  49.   install driver software.
  50.  
  51.   Start the installation from
  52.   a) Disk with               b) SuperCD with
  53.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  54.      SETUP                      START
  55.  
  56.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  57.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  58.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.
  59.  
  60.   VESA Modes:
  61.   -----------
  62.   VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the V7-MERCURY P-64 V.
  63.  
  64.   MicroStation:
  65.   -------------
  66.   SPEA BigMicro for MicroStation is now available. After installation,
  67.   please read the BIGMICRO.DOC file in your \SPEA\GDC directory.

  70. 2.2 Installation under Windows / Windows 95
  71. ===========================================
  72.   Note: The install program detects your operatin system and installs
  73.   the correct drivers.
  74.  
  75.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  76.   Manager. Then enter:
  77.  
  78.   a) (Disk)                  b) (SuperCD)
  79.      A:\SETUP                   <CD drive>:START

  81. Note:
  82.   If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE and S3TEST under
  83.   Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
  84.   using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
  85.   box.

  88. 2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  89. ================================
  90.   To install the driver software under OS/2 and Win-OS/2, put the disk
  91.   or CD in the respective drive and start as follows:
  92.  
  93.   a) (Disk)                  b) (SuperCD)
  94.      A:\V7SETOS2                <CD drive>:START
  95.  
  96.   To install other drivers and tools, start Win-OS/2 and continue as
  97.   described in section 2.2
  98.  
  99. 2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
  100. ========================================
  101.   To install, select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the 
  102.   Windows Program Manager. Then enter:
  103.  
  104.   a) (Disk)                  b) (SuperCD)
  105.      A:\V7SETNT                 <CD drive>:START
  106.  
  107. 3.  Choosing a Monitor
  108. ======================
  109.   As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
  110.   your board should be technically suitable for use with your
  111.   V7-MERCURY P-64 V board in order to be able fully utilize this.
  112.  
  113.   The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
  114.   systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
  115.   the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
  116.  
  117.   Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
  118.   of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for 
  119.   DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
  120.  
  121. Note:
  122.   SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS.
  123.   
  124.                  *** IMPORTANT ***
  125.  
  126.   Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
  127.   outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
  128.   If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
  129.   and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!
  130.  
  131. 4.  Known Restrictions
  132. ======================
  133.  
  134.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  135.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  136.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  137.   the V7-MERCURY P-64 V, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  138.   PC first.
  139.  
  140.   (2) Some applications, e.g. Windows 3.1, Word ..., offer an internal
  141.   configuration program which in turn offer 'Video 7 ...' drivers as
  142.   the VGA device.
  143.   These can NOT be used for the V7-MERCURY P-64 V!
  144.   To achieve optimal driver configuration in cases like these, proceed
  145.   with the installation and configuration of driver software as 
  146.   described in the manual of the V7-MERCURY P-64 V.
  147.  
  148. 5.  Notes on Applications
  149. =========================
  150.   Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
  151.   V7-MERCURY P-64 V. These contain information on last-minute changes
  152.   that could not be included in the manual. They also contain 
  153.   information concerning known restrictions.
  154.   The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during 
  155.   the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
  156.   the extension .DOC.
  157.   You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.
  158.

  164. 6.  Corrections to the Manual
  165. =============================
  166.   
  167.   V7-MERCURY P-64 V and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 100 Hz:
  168.   -------------------------------------------------------
  169.   The BIOS of your V7-MERCURY P-64 V supports all available resolutions
  170.   up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
  171.   also makes refresh rates up to 100 Hz possible. An overview of the
  172.   frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
  173.   Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
  174.   only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
  175.   't'. For this reason, a corresponding call is placed in your
  176.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.
  177.  
  178.   S3TEST:
  179.   -------
  180.   S3TEST is a program provided to test your graphics board for errors. It
  181.   check whether the board is correctly functioning together with your PC.
  182.   During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds), a number of
  183.   different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor (these are
  184.   different according to the board being tested). The patterns created 
  185.   are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error on
  186.   your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.
