  32.     1.  Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software Utility Introduction
  33.  
  34.     The Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software utility, which can be
  35. used in place of the printer's front panel, supplies the printer configuration
  36. settings and status feedback features previously managed by the front panel.
  37.  
  38.     The Control Panel Software only performs under DOS, with the printer
  39. directly connected to your PC. The Control Panel Software utility consists of
  40. two programs: Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter.
  41.  
  42.     A. Control Panel Software
  43.  
  44.     Control Panel Software lets you update your printer configuration
  45. settings, called "printer profiles", conveniently from your PC. You can also
  46. view your printer's current profile on your PC screen. And you can save
  47. current profile settings for use at a later time.
  48.  
  49.   - Control Panel Software can handle five kinds of configuration settings:
  50.     Page, Font, Quality, Memory, and Other.
  51.   - The Page screen lets you determine page layout.
  52.   - The Font screen lets you select a font used to print text by typeface,
  53.     pitch or point size, and symbol set.
  54.   - The Quality screen lets you adjust the quality of your printout by
  55.     settings such as TonrSavR, EET, and density.
  56.   - The Memory screen lets you control how memory is used in your printer
  57.     to reduce the printing overrun and memory overflow errors.
  58.   - The Other screen lets you control Power Save Mode.
  59.  
  60.     B. Control Panel Reporter
  61.  
  62.     Control Panel Reporter is a "terminate and stay resident" (TSR) program
  63. that only works under DOS. Once loaded into PC memory, Control Panel
  64. Reporter monitors the Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer's status in real-time and
  65. automatically displays printer error and warning messages directly on your
  66. PC screen whenever the printer's status changes. Examples of printer status
  67. messages are: printer warming up, paper jam, etc.

  69.     Once loaded into PC memory, Control Panel Reporter can be accessed by
  70. hot key at any time. (A hot key is a combination of keyboard keys you can
  71. press while you are running other DOS application programs. Control Panel
  72. Reporter's default hot key combination is <ctl><alt><R>.)

  76.     2.  Minimum System Requirements and Connection Notice
  77.  
  78.     To use the Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software utility, you must
  79. have the following:
  80.  
  81.        - Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer
  82.        - An IBM-compatible 286-based computer, or faster
  83.        - DOS version 3.3 or later
  84.        - 640 KBytes RAM (450 KBytes available) in the computer
  85.        - 800 KBytes of hard disk space available for the Panasonic
  86.          Control Panel Software Utility
  87.        - PC with a standard parallel printer port
  88.        - A VGA-compatible (or superior graphics adapter) monitor for
  89.          graphics display mode, or a non-VGA monitor for text-only display.
  90.  
  91.     NOTE: Control Panel Software can display screens in either text or
  92. graphics mode, depending on your PC's monitor. Reporter, which is a TSR,
  93. runs in text-only mode to minimize memory requirements.
  94.  
  95.     To work properly, both Control Panel Software and Control Panel
  96. Reporter depend on the connection to Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer to retrieve
  97. current printer profile and status information.
  98.  
  99.     This means the connection must be direct. If other devices are connected
  100. between the PC and the printer, including print spoolers (hardware and even
  101. some software) and switch boxes, they will interfere with the communications
  102. from the printer to the PC. For the same reason, Control Panel Software and
  103. Control Panel Reporter do not work over a network. The printer must be
  104. directly attached to the PC's parallel port, with bi-directional capability
  105. enabled, for Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter to work
  106. properly.

  110. 3.  Installation Instructions
  111.  
  112.     The Setup program provides simple instructions to help you install the
  113. Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software Utility onto your hard disk
  114. drive.  To get started, follow these easy steps:
  115.  
  116.     a. Connect your Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer securely to your PC's
  117.        parallel port.
  118.     b. Turn on your computer. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS.
  119.     c. Turn on your printer and make sure it is Ready.
  120.     d. Insert the Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software (disk 4 of 4)
  121.       diskette into your floppy disk drive.
  122.     e. At the DOS prompt, change to the drive with the Panasonic KX-P6500
  123.       Control Panel Software (disk 4 of 4) diskette (usually A: or B:).
  124.     f. At the DOS prompt A: (or whichever drive has the diskette), type
  125.      SETUP. The screen will show the setup instructions for installing
  126.      the Control Panel Software program and the Control Panel Reporter
  127.      program onto your hard disk drive at the specified directory (for
  128.      example, C:\P6500CPS).
  129.  
  130.     NOTE: The SETUP program updates your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  It
  131. places the command to load the Control Panel Reporter last in
  132. AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  133.  
  134.    The Control Panel Reporter will be loaded automatically whenever you
  135. turn on your computer or AUTOEXEC.BAT is performed. Since Reporter
  136. uses the DOS file system, the command to load Reporter in AUTOEXEC.BAT
  137. must appear after all disk caching and disk compression, as well as after LAN
  138. software (such as Netware) has been loaded.

  140.     g. To access the Control Panel Software program, type CPS6500 (graphics
  141.        mode) or PAN (text mode) at the directory prompt.  (If you do not have a
  142.        PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT referencing the directory where you
  143.        installed the Control Panel Software, you will need to move to that directory
  144.        or type C:\P6500CPS\CPS6500 (graphics mode) or C:\P6500CPS\PAN
  145.        (text mode), where P6500CPS is the name of the directory where the
  146.        software is located.)
  147.     h. Once loaded, you may want to access Control Panel Reporter, for
  148.       example to change the default hot key assignment or color scheme. Use
  149.       the current hot key to run Control Panel Reporter (the default is
  150.       <ctl><alt><R>).

  152.     You can also run Control Panel Reporter, whether or not the program has
  153. already been loaded, by typing REPORT at the DOS prompt. (If you do not
  154. have a PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT referencing the directory where
  155. you installed the Control Panel Software, you will need to move to that
  156. directory or type C:ÑP6500CPSÑREPORT, where P6500CPS is the name of
  157. the directory where the software is located.)

  159.     NOTE: In order to use Control Panel Software with a mouse, you will
  160. need your mouse driver installed and running in DOS.  See your mouse
  161. installation documention for more information on this.  A message such as
  162. "bad command or file name" may mean your mouse driver is not installed
  163. properly.

  167.     4.  Running Control Panel Software
  168.  
  169.     Control Panel Software allows you to view and update the printer's
  170. configuration from your PC. To run Control Panel Software, type CPS6500
  171. (graphics mode) or PAN (text mode) at the DOS prompt (do not use the
  172. Windows DOS box). A welcome screen appears briefly as the computer
  173. retrieves the current printer profile (i.e. the configuration settings). Then the
  174. Control Panel Software menu and screen appears. To return to the DOS
  175. prompt, select EXIT.

  179.     5.  Running Control Panel Reporter
  180.  
  181.     Control Panel Reporter alerts you to changes in printer status (for example,
  182. paper jam) real-time on your PC's screen. To run Control Panel Reporter, type
  183. REPORT at the DOS prompt (do not use the Windows DOS box). The screen
  184. on the PC will show the default hot key combination. Once loaded, Control
  185. Panel Reporter begins monitoring messages from the printer. Whenever the
  186. printer's status changes(for example, if the paper jams while printing),
  187. Control Panel Reporter automatically displays a message on your computer
  188. screen.

  190.     If Control Panel Reporter (which is a TSR) is interfering with one of your
  191. other software applications, or if you need to free the memory Control Panel
  192. Reporter uses, you can de-install it from memory by typing UNREPORT at
  193. the DOS prompt.
  194.  
  195.     NOTE: Both Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter must
  196. read messages from the printer. If Control Panel Reporter is loaded into PC
  197. memory first, the printer status report feature in Control Panel Reporter will
  198. be disabled while Printer Control Panel is running. You can still access
  199. Control Panel Reporter for other features - just enter the hot key combination
  200. for Control Panel Reporter (the default is <ctl><alt><R>. Once you exit
  201. Control Panel Software, all features of Control Panel Reporter will work
  202. correctly.
