1. Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software Utility Introduction
The Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software utility, which can be
used in place of the printer's front panel, supplies the printer configuration
settings and status feedback features previously managed by the front panel.
The Control Panel Software only performs under DOS, with the printer
directly connected to your PC. The Control Panel Software utility consists of
two programs: Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter.
A. Control Panel Software
Control Panel Software lets you update your printer configuration
settings, called "printer profiles", conveniently from your PC. You can also
view your printer's current profile on your PC screen. And you can save
current profile settings for use at a later time.
- Control Panel Software can handle five kinds of configuration settings:
Page, Font, Quality, Memory, and Other.
- The Page screen lets you determine page layout.
- The Font screen lets you select a font used to print text by typeface,
pitch or point size, and symbol set.
- The Quality screen lets you adjust the quality of your printout by
settings such as TonrSavR, EET, and density.
- The Memory screen lets you control how memory is used in your printer
to reduce the printing overrun and memory overflow errors.
- The Other screen lets you control Power Save Mode.
B. Control Panel Reporter
Control Panel Reporter is a "terminate and stay resident" (TSR) program
that only works under DOS. Once loaded into PC memory, Control Panel
Reporter monitors the Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer's status in real-time and
automatically displays printer error and warning messages directly on your
PC screen whenever the printer's status changes. Examples of printer status
messages are: printer warming up, paper jam, etc.
Once loaded into PC memory, Control Panel Reporter can be accessed by
hot key at any time. (A hot key is a combination of keyboard keys you can
press while you are running other DOS application programs. Control Panel
Reporter's default hot key combination is <ctl><alt><R>.)

2. Minimum System Requirements and Connection Notice
To use the Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software utility, you must
have the following:
- Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer
- An IBM-compatible 286-based computer, or faster
- DOS version 3.3 or later
- 640 KBytes RAM (450 KBytes available) in the computer
- 800 KBytes of hard disk space available for the Panasonic
Control Panel Software Utility
- PC with a standard parallel printer port
- A VGA-compatible (or superior graphics adapter) monitor for
graphics display mode, or a non-VGA monitor for text-only display.
NOTE: Control Panel Software can display screens in either text or
graphics mode, depending on your PC's monitor. Reporter, which is a TSR,
runs in text-only mode to minimize memory requirements.
To work properly, both Control Panel Software and Control Panel
Reporter depend on the connection to Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer to retrieve
current printer profile and status information.
This means the connection must be direct. If other devices are connected
between the PC and the printer, including print spoolers (hardware and even
some software) and switch boxes, they will interfere with the communications
from the printer to the PC. For the same reason, Control Panel Software and
Control Panel Reporter do not work over a network. The printer must be
directly attached to the PC's parallel port, with bi-directional capability
enabled, for Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter to work
properly.

3. Installation Instructions
The Setup program provides simple instructions to help you install the
Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software Utility onto your hard disk
drive. To get started, follow these easy steps:
a. Connect your Panasonic KX-P6500 Printer securely to your PC's
parallel port.
b. Turn on your computer. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS.
c. Turn on your printer and make sure it is Ready.
d. Insert the Panasonic KX-P6500 Control Panel Software (disk 4 of 4)
diskette into your floppy disk drive.
e. At the DOS prompt, change to the drive with the Panasonic KX-P6500
Control Panel Software (disk 4 of 4) diskette (usually A: or B:).
f. At the DOS prompt A: (or whichever drive has the diskette), type
SETUP. The screen will show the setup instructions for installing
the Control Panel Software program and the Control Panel Reporter
program onto your hard disk drive at the specified directory (for
example, C:\P6500CPS).
NOTE: The SETUP program updates your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It
places the command to load the Control Panel Reporter last in
AUTOEXEC.BAT.
The Control Panel Reporter will be loaded automatically whenever you
turn on your computer or AUTOEXEC.BAT is performed. Since Reporter
uses the DOS file system, the command to load Reporter in AUTOEXEC.BAT
must appear after all disk caching and disk compression, as well as after LAN
software (such as Netware) has been loaded.
g. To access the Control Panel Software program, type CPS6500 (graphics
mode) or PAN (text mode) at the directory prompt. (If you do not have a
PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT referencing the directory where you
installed the Control Panel Software, you will need to move to that directory
or type C:\P6500CPS\CPS6500 (graphics mode) or C:\P6500CPS\PAN
(text mode), where P6500CPS is the name of the directory where the
software is located.)
h. Once loaded, you may want to access Control Panel Reporter, for
example to change the default hot key assignment or color scheme. Use
the current hot key to run Control Panel Reporter (the default is
<ctl><alt><R>).
You can also run Control Panel Reporter, whether or not the program has
already been loaded, by typing REPORT at the DOS prompt. (If you do not
have a PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT referencing the directory where
you installed the Control Panel Software, you will need to move to that
directory or type C:ÑP6500CPSÑREPORT, where P6500CPS is the name of
the directory where the software is located.)
NOTE: In order to use Control Panel Software with a mouse, you will
need your mouse driver installed and running in DOS. See your mouse
installation documention for more information on this. A message such as
"bad command or file name" may mean your mouse driver is not installed
properly.

4. Running Control Panel Software
Control Panel Software allows you to view and update the printer's
configuration from your PC. To run Control Panel Software, type CPS6500
(graphics mode) or PAN (text mode) at the DOS prompt (do not use the
Windows DOS box). A welcome screen appears briefly as the computer
retrieves the current printer profile (i.e. the configuration settings). Then the
Control Panel Software menu and screen appears. To return to the DOS
prompt, select EXIT.
***********************************************************************
5. Running Control Panel Reporter
Control Panel Reporter alerts you to changes in printer status (for example,
paper jam) real-time on your PC's screen. To run Control Panel Reporter, type
REPORT at the DOS prompt (do not use the Windows DOS box). The screen
on the PC will show the default hot key combination. Once loaded, Control
Panel Reporter begins monitoring messages from the printer. Whenever the
printer's status changes(for example, if the paper jams while printing),
Control Panel Reporter automatically displays a message on your computer
screen.
If Control Panel Reporter (which is a TSR) is interfering with one of your
other software applications, or if you need to free the memory Control Panel
Reporter uses, you can de-install it from memory by typing UNREPORT at
the DOS prompt.
NOTE: Both Control Panel Software and Control Panel Reporter must
read messages from the printer. If Control Panel Reporter is loaded into PC
memory first, the printer status report feature in Control Panel Reporter will
be disabled while Printer Control Panel is running. You can still access
Control Panel Reporter for other features - just enter the hot key combination
for Control Panel Reporter (the default is <ctl><alt><R>. Once you exit
Control Panel Software, all features of Control Panel Reporter will work
correctly.
