Orchid Technology
General Guide for Configuring the Display
options for Windows 95
Changing resolutions
====================
Changing of resolutions is dramatically different for Windows 95
than it is for Windows 3.1x. Currently, to change resolutions
for the Orchid Technology video cards, users can select the Orchid
Icon in the Control Panel and select the desired resolution and
color palette. Changing resolutions in Windows 95 is quite
different. First of all, if an Orchid Icon is visible in the
Windows 95 Control Panel, please refer to the "Other Issues"
section and read how to remove the Orchid Icon from the Control
Panel. If the Orchid Icon is used for any reason, Windows 95 may
become unstable.
To change resolutions and color palette in Windows 95, you can
do the following:
1) Launch the Control Panel which is located under "My
Computer" if using the Explorer interface.
2) Double-click on the "Display" Icon and select "Settings"
from the tabs
3) The "Color Palette" option allows users to select the
amount of colors to run Windows 95 at. The corresponding
colors to the displayed options are:
High Color (16 bit) 65,535 colors
High Color (24 bit) 16.7 Million colors
High Color (32 bit) 16.7 Million colors.
If a selected palette is not supported for a chosen
resolution, then the next available resolution for the
selected palette will automatically be selected by
Windows 95.
For example, if the Desktop area is set
for 1024x768 at 16 bit. If a user selects
24 bit color which may only be supported at
640x480 (depending on video card),
Windows 95 will automatically adjust the
resolution to 640x480.
4) Before choosing the resolution, select the size of the
color palette. To change the resolution, simply move the
slide bar under the "Desktop area" until the desired
resolution is displayed. If the resolution is not valid
for the chosen color palette, then the next available
palette for the resolution will be selected by Windows 95.
For example, if a video card supports 16 bit
color for 1024x768, and a user wants to
select 24 or 32 bit color, Windows will
automatically set the palette to 16 bit color.
If, for some reason, Windows 95 will not allow a supported
palette or resolution to be selected, make sure the
proper monitor type is selected. If an incorrect monitor
is selected, the resolution may not be supported for the
specified monitor.
Changing display drivers
==================
There are two ways to change the display drivers in Windows 95.
The first way is to select the "System" icon from the Control
Panel, the other way is to select the "Display" icon from the
Control Panel. This readme will detail how to change the display
drivers both ways. With some of Orchid Technology video cards
(i.e. Kelvin series, Fahrenheit 64 series) an Orchid group will be
created during the driver installation. This Icon needs to be
removed from the associated group.
Changing the display driver via the "System" icon:
1) Double-click on the "System" icon in the Control Panel
2) From the tabs select "Device Manager" and double click
on the "Display adapters" line.
3) You should now see the display driver that is loading,
highlight the display driver and click on the "Properties"
button
4) From the Properties display, select "Driver" from the tabs
and click on the "Change Driver" button
5) Select "Show All Devices" to view all possible video
drivers, or if you have a diskette, click on the "Have
Disk" button.
6) Select OK until the prompt to restart Windows and select
"Yes".
Changing Display Driver through the "Display" icon
1) Double-click on the "Display" icon in the Control Panel
2) From the tabs, select "Settings" and click on the
"Change Display Type"
3) To change the video card type, click on the "Change"
button that is next to the "Adapter Type" field. If you
want to change the monitor type, click on the "Change"
button that is next to the "Monitor Type" field.
4) Select "Show All Devices" to view all possible devices,
or if you have a diskette, click on the "Have Disk"
button.
5) Select OK until the prompt to restart Windows and select
"Yes".
Other Issues
=========
1) Removing the Orchid Icon in the Control Panel
The Orchid Icon that shows up the Control Panel is only
for Windows 3.1x. The icons should be removed from the
Control Panel. To do so, simply delete the associated CPL
file from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. The following
listing will list which CPL file is associated with the
particular Orchid Technology video cards.
Video Card CPL File for Video Card
~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celsius VLB CELSETUP.CPL
Fahrenheit 1280 ORCHIDF.CPL
Fahrenheit 1280 + series FAHSETUP.CPL or
ORCHIDF.CPL
Fahrenheit VA series FAHSETUP.CPL and
SNDSETUP.CPL
Fahrenheit 64 F64PANEL.CPL
Fahrenheit PRO 64 F64PANEL.CPL
Fahrenheit PRO Video 64 F64PANEL.CPL
Kelvin 64 KELVINCP.CPL
Kelvin MPEG KELVINCP.CPL
Pro Designer II/IIS PDSETUP.CPL
2) Magnify and Virtual Screen are not supported in
Windows 95.
3) If you select an incorrect video card driver, Windows 95
will run in "Safe Mode", this mode essentially boots with
a standard VGA driver. Once in Safe Mode, follow the
instructions for changing the display driver. It is
recommended to let Windows 95 detect the video card and
load the appropriate drivers.
