  120. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software, 
  121. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to 
  122. all Number Nine customers on the Number Nine Bulletin Board 
  123. System (BBS).

  125. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  126. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in text 
  127. file VERSION.TXT on disk 1) with the version number of the 
  128. corresponding software on the BBS.

  151. The BBS has a separate file area for each Number Nine product.  
  152. The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file 
  153. area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be 
  154. found in the General library.  An E-mail system is available 
  155. for technical questions about Number Nine products or about 
  156. the BBS in general.  A complete listing of available files can 
  157. be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command 
  158. from any file library menu.

  160. On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible 
  161. terminal program is available in the General library 
  162. (RIPTM154.ZIP).

  164. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the 
  165. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available 
  166. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be 
  167. found on most on-line services such as Compuserve and America 
  168. Online.

  204.     1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order to 
  205.     install this driver.  You must also have OS/2 REXX Support
  206.     installed.
  207.  
  208.     2.  The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation. If 
  209.     you elected not to install the OS/2 System Utility 
  210.     Programs or you have deleted the ATTRIB command, you must
  211.     use Selective Install to restore the ATTRIB command before 
  212.     continuing.

  215. INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE

  240. This video accelerator driver release is compatible with OS/2 2.1 
  241. or later.  Do not attempt to install it on previous versions of 
  242. OS/2.
  243.  
  244. To install this #9 video accelerator driver from diskette:
  245.  
  246.     1.  Place diskette 1 into drive A (or another diskette 
  247.     drive).
  248.  
  249.     2.  Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.
  250.  
  251.     3.  Open the "Command Prompts" folder.
  252.  
  253.     4.  Open an "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.
  254.  
  255.     5.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:
  256.  
  257.          [INSTALLDRIVE:]\S3INST [INSTALLDRIVE:] [BOOTDRIVE:]
  258.  
  259.          where: [INSTALLDRIVE:] is the diskette drive
  260.             [BOOTDRIVE:] is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  261.  
  262.          Example:   A:\S3INST A: C:
  263.     
  264.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 
  265.     drive.
  266.     
  267.     If you are prompted to replace the files DISPLAY.DLL and
  268.     PMVIOP.DLL, answer "NO". These files should NOT be 
  269.     overwritten.
  270.  
  271.     6.    Exit the "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.
  272.  
  273.     7.  Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  274.     shutdown, and then restart the system.
  275.  
  276.     8.    Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  277.  
  278.     9.  Open the "System Setup" folder.
  279.  
  280.     10. Open the "Display Driver Install" (DSPINSTL) object.
  281.  
  282.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating
  283.     the SVGADATA.PMI file on the drive where the OS2 directory
  284.     is located.
  285.  
  286.     NOTE:     If the Display Driver Install object is 
  287.               missing, refer to the "Important Note For 
  288.               BBS Users" at the top of this section.
  289.     
  290.     11. When the Display Driver Install window appears, "Super 
  291.     Video Graphics Array (S3)" should be the default choice 
  292.     for Primary Display. 
  293.     Select the Primary Display check box.
  294.     Select "OK".
  295.  
  296.     12.    A list of supported adapters in the Primary Display Driver 
  297.     List window.
  298.     Select "32 Bit S3 Display Drivers".
  299.     Select "OK".
  300.  
  301.     13.    When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window 
  302.     appears: 
  303.     Select "Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program". 
  304.     Select "OK".
  305.       
  306.     14.    Put in diskette #1. In the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility 
  307.         Location window, type the following command:
  308.  
  309.          [INSTALLDRIVE:]\REFRESH.EXE
  310.  
  311.           where: [INSTALLDRIVE:] is the diskette drive    
  312.  
  313.                 Example: A:\REFRESH.EXE
  314.  
  315.     Select "OK".
  316.         
  317.     15.    When the 9FX Motion531 Refresh Rate Utility window appears you will be able to select refresh rates by monitor resolution. 
  318.  
  319.       NOTE: Setting refresh rates higher than your monitor's 
  320.         design specifications may cause damage. Consult 
  321.         your monitor's documentation for maximum resolution 
  322.         and refresh rate information.
  323.  
  324.     After selecting appropriate refresh rates for your monitor, 
  325.     select "EXIT".
  326.  
  327.     16.    When prompted to save changes in AUTOEXEC.BAT, select "NO".    
  328.  
  329.       The screen will turn black momentarily while your display 
  330.     is checked. If you have an energy-saving monitor, you may 
  331.     need to turn it off and then on again. 
  332.  
  333.     17. When the source directory pop-up window appears 
  334.     -select Install. 
  335.  
  336.     When prompted
  337.     - insert diskette 2, select OK and wait until the installation 
  338.       program finishes transferring files to your hard disk.
  339.  
  340.     18. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  341.     shutdown, and then restart the system.
  342.  
  343.     19. When the installation is complete, do the following:
  344.      a.  Open "OS/2 System".
  345.      b.  Open "System Setup".
  346.      c.  Open the "System" object.  The Screen page of the 
  347.          Settings notebook lists all the supported resolutions
  348.          for your configuration.
  349.      d.  Select a resolution; then, close the notebook.
  350.  
  351.     20.  Perform a shutdown; then, restart the system.

  357. NOTE:    After installing this driver release, if you must 
  358.      re-install OS/2, be sure to delete the following 
  359.      files from your \OS2\INSTALL directory FIRST!!!
  360.

  363.             GXE64P.DSC
  364.  
  365.      The OS/2 installation will not complete if these 
  366.      files are present.
  367.  
  368. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  369. CHANGING VERTICAL REFRESH RATES
  370. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  371.  
  372. This section is intended for those users who have already installed 
  373. the Number Nine OS/2 Display Driver for the 9FX Motion531 and have set 
  374. refresh rates using the 9FX Motion531 Refresh Rate Utility.
  375.  
  376. To select new refresh rates:
  377.  
  378.     1.  Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.
  379.  
  380.     2.  Open the "Command Prompts" folder.
  381.  
  382.     3.  Open a "DOS Full-Screen" session.
  383.          
  384.     4.  Insert diskette 1 into your diskette drive.
  385.     Diskette must be labeled S3 DRV1 and must contain the 
  386.     file REFRESH.EXE.
  387.  
  388.     5.    Type [DRIVE:]\REFRESH.EXE and hit <Enter>.
  389.     
  390.          where: [DRIVE:] is your diskette drive
  391.  
  392.          Example:   A:\REFRESH.EXE    
  393.         
  394.     6.     When the 9FX Motion771 Refresh Rate Utility window appears you 
  395.     will be able to select refresh rates by monitor resolution. 
  396.  
  397.       NOTE: Setting refresh rates higher than your monitor's 
  398.         design specifications may cause damage. Consult 
  399.         your monitor's documentation for maximum resolution 
  400.         and refresh rate information.
  401.  
  402.     After selecting appropriate refresh rates for your monitor, 
  403.     select "EXIT".

  405.     7.    When prompted to save changes in AUTOEXEC.BAT, select "NO".

  407.     8.    In your hard drive's \OS2 directory, at the prompt, type the 
  408.     following command:   
  409.     
  410.     SVGA[space]ON[space]DOS 
  411.     
  412.     Press <Enter>.
  413.     This will create file SVGADATA.DOS.
  414.      
  415.     9.    In the \OS2 directory:
  416.  
  417.     - Copy SVGADATA.PMI to SVGADAT.SAV.
  418.     - Then, copy SVGADATA.DOS to SVGADATA.PMI.
  419.  
  420.     Exit the DOS Session. 
  421.  
  422.     10.    Remove the diskette from your diskette drive.
  423.  
  424.     11. Perform a shutdown; then, restart your system.
  425.  
  426.  
  427. NOTE:     The REFRESH.EXE file may be copied to a directory and then
  428.     run from your hard drive. 
  429.  
  430.  
  431. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  432. FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
  433. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  434.  
  435.  
  436. o  With the program VPIC6 under FS DOS, GIFs cannot be viewed in 
  437.    the 1280x1024 resolution. 
  438.  
  439. o  Users of the software motion video feature of MMPM/2 
  440.    should expect satisfactory results in 256-color modes. 
  441.    However, in 65,536 color modes, users of the feature will 
  442.    experience unusual results.  An OS/2 pervasive fix package 
  443.    will be available electronically from IBM.
  444.  
  445.    In addition, the software motion video feature will take 
  446.    advantage of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems
  447.    where it is available to improve the performance of video
  448.    playback in 65,536 color modes.  
  449.  
  450.    For those systems with non-standard locations, the actual 
  451.    physical address of the aperture must be provided in the 
  452.    following CONFIG.SYS statement:
  453.  
  454.            SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh
  455.  
  456.    where "xxx" is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB, 
  457.    representing the actual physical address to map to the 
  458.    aperture. For PCI cards xxxh=880h. Therefore, the 
  459.    CONFIG.SYS statement should read: 
  460.  
  461.            SET VIDEO_APERTURE=880h
  462.  
  463. o  Context switching from Win-OS/2 full screen to OS/2 full screen may
  464.    produce a distorted text in OS/2 full screen.
  465.  
  466. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  467. BEFORE CONTACTING NUMBER NINE TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  468. ------------------------------------------------------------------

  470. ò Installation Problems
  471.  
  472.     During the installation of this driver a DISPLAY.LOG file 
  473.     is created in the OS2\INSTALL directory.  This file 
  474.     identifies the OS/2 system files that were updated and
  475.     indicates whether the installation was successful. The 
  476.     contents of this file might be useful if you need to report
  477.     an installation problem to Number Nine Technical Support.
  478.  
  479.  
  480. ò OS/2 2.11 (or later) Installation 
  481.  
  482.     Note that this release includes patches to the OS/2 2.1 
  483.     kernel and virtual Windows driver, which are required to 
  484.     support the new 32-bit S3 driver architecture.  
  485.  
  486.     If you are running OS/2 2.11 the patches in this package 
  487.     are not necessary.  Thus, under OS/2 2.11, or with the 
  488.     Pentium patches under OS/2 2.1, the installation program's
  489.     attempt to patch the kernel will fail.  This failure will 
  490.     be recorded in DISPLAY.LOG, and is normal!  It does not 
  491.     indicate a failure to correctly install the drivers.
  492.  
  493. ò Resolution Availability and DRAM
  494.  
  495.     If you change the amount of DRAM on your 9FX Motion531, you will 
  496.     need to:
  497.  
  498.     1. Set your 9FX Motion531 to run in VGA mode by running the 
  499.        appropriate SETVGA procedure for your OS/2 version.
  500.        (see NEW SETVGA PROCEDURE section in this README.TXT)  
  501.  
  502.     2. Then, re-install the Number Nine OS/2 Display Driver for 
  503.        the 9FX Motion531 (per the INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE section 
  504.        in this README.TXT). 
  505.

  520. To bring up a menu that allows VGA mode to be selected, depress 
  521. the Alt-F1 keys when restarting your system. 
  522.

  525. OS/2 2.1 and 2.11 Users:
  526. --------------
  527.  
  528. Users of OS/2 2.1 or 2.11 can use one of the following procedures, 
  529. instead of the SETVGA command, to return to VGA mode.
  530.  
  531. NOTE:   If your display is out of sync, start OS/2 using the OS/2
  532.     Installation Diskette. Insert Diskette 1 when prompted, 
  533.     then press Esc to access a command prompt.  Follow the 
  534.     instructions below to reset your display mode.

  536. o  If you installed OS/2 from diskettes:
  537.  
  538.     1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  539.     it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, insert OS/2 
  540.     Installation Diskette 8 and unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the 
  541.     following command:
  542.  
  543.     C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  544.  
  545.     where:  A: is the drive containing OS/2 Installation 
  546.            Diskette 8
  547.         C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  548.  
  549.     2.  Type C: then press Enter.
  550.     3.  Type CD C:\OS2\INSTALL then press Enter.
  551.     4.  Type RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C: then press 
  552.     Enter.

  554.     /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  555.     /S:A: where A: is the diskette drive you use to install 
  556.           OS/2

  558. o  If you installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN:
  559.  
  560.      1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  561.      it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE 
  562.      with the following command:
  563.  
  564.      C:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE

  566.      where:  C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed
