  50. 2.) Single-screen configuration

  52. 2.1.) Supported boards

  62. 2.2.) Hardware installation
  63.  
  64.   Install your graphics board as described in the Hardware Manual
  65.   supplied with your board.
  66.

  68. 2.3.) Driver installation
  69.  
  70.   It is required that you have installed Windows NT 3.51 with a
  71.   graphics driver for your VGA board.
  72.  
  73.   PLEASE NOTE:
  74.  
  75.   If you dont't have installed Windows NT 3.51, first install it 
  76.   in VGA mode. Do not use the system supplied S3 driver. Continue 
  77.   the  installation and install the driver after reboot of the system.

  80.   a) In the "main" group start the "Control Panel" program.
  81.  
  82.   b) Start the "Display Tool" to select/change the video display.
  83.  
  84.   c) In the "Display Settings" window click the "Change Display Type"
  85.      button.
  86.  
  87.   d) In the "Display Type" window you get information on the current
  88.      display driver. Click the "Change" button.
  89.  
  90.   e) The "Select Device" window offers an overview of all display
  91.      drivers supplied with Windows NT 3.51. Click the "Other" button.
  92.  
  93.   f) In the "Install From Disk" window you are requested to insert
  94.      the installation disk "A:\". If necessary, overwrite the default
  95.      selection. Click "OK" to confirm.
  96.  
  97.   g) The "Select Device" window appears again. At the end of the
  98.      display driver list there is also the driver for your miro
  99.      board. Select your board and click the "Install" button. 
  100.      Confirm the following warning.
  101.  
  102.   h) If you had already installed the driver, you are asked whether
  103.      you want to install the old or the new driver. Start the
  104.      installation of a new driver by clicking the "New" button.
  105.  
  106.   i) You are requested again to insert the installation disk
  107.      under A:\. If necessary, overwrite the default. To confirm the
  108.      installation, click the "Continue" button. When the message about
  109.      a successful installation appears confirm. Confirm the message
  110.      telling you that the driver is only available after restarting
  111.      the computer.
  112.  
  113.   j) You can restart the computer immediately by clicking "Restart Now"
  114.      in the "Display settings change" window. You can also click the
  115.      "Don┤t Restart Now" button to go back to the "Display type" window.
  116.      To close this window click "Close". To close the "Display settings"
  117.      window click "OK". Use the Program Manager to restart the system.
  118.  
  119.   k) After the restart the driver which has just been installed
  120.      is active with the lowest resolution (31 kHz VESA monitor:
  121.      640 x 480, 256 colours, 60 Hz). Go on with 2.4.) to select a
  122.      monitor and with 2.5.) to change the resolution.
  123.  
  124.   If problems occur with the display driver when restarting
  125.   the system, you can reselect the VGA driver by using the
  126.   "Windows NT Version 3.51 [VGA mode]" option in the boot menu.
  127.   If this doesn`t solve the problem use the "last good menu"
  128.   option to reselect the old configuration.
  129.  
  130.   If this does not help either, use the Windows-NT-setup-disk/-CD
  131.   and the "Emergency Repair Disk" to repair your system. The
  132.   "Emergency Repair Disk" should include a configuration with a
  133.   VGA driver "640x480, 16 colors" because your system runs properly
  134.   with this driver in any case. To repair your system select the
  135.   "Inspect configuration registry" and "SYSTEM (System Configuration)"
  136.   options only.

  138.   If your system uses another display driver, you need the installation
  139.   disk to enable the "miroCRYSTAL" driver again. You can, however, use
  140.   the driver already installed on your hard disk by clicking the
  141.   "Current" button (see h)).

  144. 2.4.) miro Monitor Select - Control Panel extension
  145.  
  146.   a) Start the "Control Panel" program from the "main" group.
  147.  
  148.   b) To select a monitor, start the "miro Monitor Select"-Tool.
  149.  
  150.   c) The title is the name of your graphics board.
  151.  
  152.   d) Select your monitor from the "Monitor" list. If your monitor
  153.      is not listed, select the monitor  from the "Multi Frequency"
  154.      monitors with the frequency which comes close to the frequency
  155.      of your monitor.
  156.  
  157.   e) After a short while you see the "Available Resolutions" list
  158.      which gives you an overview of all resolutions supported by
  159.      your monitor and the horizontal and vertical refresh rates.
  160.      Please make sure that you do not select a horizontal scan
  161.      frequency which is higher than the horizontal scan frequency
  162.      of your monitor.
  163.  
  164.   f) To confirm your selection, click "OK".
  165.  
  166.   g) In the "Monitor Settings Change" window you can restart your
  167.      computer immediately by pressing the "Restart Now" button.
  168.      You can also click the "Don't Restart Now" button to get back
  169.      to the "Control Panel" program. Restart the system using the
  170.      Program Manager.
  171.  
  172.   h) After the restart the selected monitor is active. If the
  173.      resolutions and refresh rates differ from the settings of
  174.      the previous monitor, the system will notify you. Then, the
  175.      640 x 480 resolution with 256 colors and 31 kHz / 60 Hz is
  176.      enabled. To change the resolution, proceed with 2.5.).
  177.  
  178.   i) Instad of proceeding as described under f), you can abort the
  179.      tool by pressing the "Cancel" button. In this case, the settings
  180.      you made will not be enabled.

  182.   PLEASE NOTE:
  183.   The "miro Monitor Select" icon is only available in the "Control Panel"
  184.   program, if a driver installed from this disk is currently active.

  187. 2.5.) Changing the resolutions
  188.  
  189.   a) In the "main" group start the "Control Panel" program.
  190.  
  191.   b) Start the "Display Tool" to select/change the video display.
  192.  
  193.   c) The "List All Modes" button lists the resolutions your
  194.      board and your monitor support and the number of colours
  195.      and frequencies. Double-click to select a resolution.
  196.  
  197.   d) You can also use the "Desktop area" slider, the
  198.      "Color Palette" and the "Refresh Frequency" windows to
  199.      select a resolution. Keep in mind that the settings are
  200.      interdependent. If you select an invalid setting, the
  201.      other options change so that a valid setting is restored.
  202.  
  203.   e) To check the selected resolution in a testscreen, click
  204.      the "Test" button and confirm.
  205.  
  206.      - Is the selected resolution/frequency displayed on the monitor?
  207.      - Is the correct resolution specified?
  208.      - Are the arrows in the testscreen margins visible?
  209.      - Are the coloured and the hatched areas displayed correctly?
  210.  
  211.   f) After five seconds the testscreen disappears and you see the
  212.      workspace again. If the resolution on the testscreen is OK,
  213.      confirm the "Testing Mode" window with "Yes".
  214.  
  215.   g) You can restart the computer immediately by clicking "Restart Now"
  216.      in the "Display settings change" window. You can also click the
  217.      "Don┤t Restart Now" button to go back to the "Display type" window.
  218.      To close this window click "Close". To close the "Display settings"
  219.      window click "OK". Use the Program Manager to restart the system.
  220.  
  221.   h) After the restart the new resolution is active.
  222.  
  223.   i) If you do not like the resolution, click "No" in the "Testing Mode"
  224.      window. After another message has appeared, you are back in the
  225.      "Display Settings" window. Select another resolution and continue
  226.      with e) or close the Display Tool by clicking the "Cancel" button.
  227.  
  228.   The "Font Size" window allows you to select another font size
  229.   (see d)). If you have not installed the fonts of the selected
  230.   size, you are requested to insert the installation disk under
  231.   A:\. Overwrite the default with the drive letter of you CD drive
  232.   and enter the path \i386. Insert the Windows NT Version 3.51 CD
  233.   in your CD drive so that the required files can be copied to your
  234.   hard disk.

  237. 3.) Deleting drivers
  238.  
  239.   Delete drivers you do not need anymore by enabling
  240.   another driver using the Display Tool of the Control
  241.   Panel program and by restarting the sytem afterwards.
  242.   Then, use the File Manager to delete the display driver
  243.   CRYSTALV.DLL under \WINNT35\SYSTEM32 and the
  244.   miniport driver CRYSTALV.SYS and the configuration
  245.   files (extension .INI) under \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS.

  248. 4.) In case of problems
  249.  
  250.   In case of problems with the VGA DOS box in the
  251.   fullscreen mode ask your dealer or miro for an update
  252.   of the BIOS-ROM. In some cases an unsynchronized image
  253.   may stabilize by switching between the window and the
  254.   fullscreen mode of the VGA DOS box.
  255.  
  256.   The VGA DOS boxs only supports the resolutions
  257.   available for a 'standard VGA', e.g. display modes of
  258.   up to 320x200 pixels with 256 colors or 640x480 pixels
  259.   with 16 colors. If a DOS application tries to use a
  260.   higher resolution, the VGA DOS box, or, in the worst
  261.   case, the hole system might crash.

  264. 5.) Special hint
  265.  
  266.   Please do not try to install drivers or system-relevant
  267.   tools which are suited for Microsoft Windows 3.x or
  268.   Microsoft Windows 95. Windows NT 3.51 does not support
  269.   these drivers or tools. In the worst case, this may
  270.   cause a system crash.
