- Troubleshooting Tips for PageWiz - Jan 15, 1996
-
- "I get unreadable disk or corrupted file error messages during installation."
-
- If your PageWiz disks are damaged and not readable, call Microtek Sales and
- Customer Service at 1 (800) 654-4160. You may also fax requests to (310) 297-
- 5050 for replacement disks or return your scanner to the place of purchase
- to get another unit.
-
- Note: Retailers have different return policies so make sure to check with
- your reseller on their return policy.
-
- "During installation an error message appears saying 'Can't find setup'
- or 'Can't find mssetup'."
-
- For Windows 3.1x go to the File Manager and click on the A: (or B:) drive
- and find the file called setup.exe. Double-click on it to launch the PageWiz
- setup program.
-
- For Windows 95 double-click on the "My Computer" icon. Next, double-click on
- the A: (or B:) drive icon. Double-click on the file called setup or setup.exe
- to launch the PageWiz setup program.
-
- "My PageWiz scanner is not working well with Windows 95" or "Windows 95 does
- not detect my scanner after adding it to the system."
-
- The PageWiz scanner is transparent to Windows 95 and therefore will not be
- seen as new added hardware by the System Device Manager. You need to install
- the PageWiz diskettes in order for the computer to see your scanner. Both
- PageWiz hardware and software have been tested with Windows 95 and are fully
- compatible. The PageWiz scanner will not, however, work with WindowsNT.
-
- "When I feed a sheet into the scanner or launch PageSuite or Quick Panel,
- a general protection fault occurs in Windows."
-
- Read the details of the error message. If your computer has Windows 3.1x
- and the message says PageSuite caused a general protection fault in module
- krnl386.exe, reinstall Windows to correct the problem.
-
- If the details say that PageSuite caused an error in PageSuit.exe, then
- there is a software conflict with another program. Known conflicts are the
- NEC Call Manager, Sticky Note Pad, CardWare and the Playboy Screen Saver.
- To resolve this conflict clear the error message and perform a file search
- starting from the root directory "C:", for a file called cpalette.dll. The
- search should produce only one file by that name in the C:\PAGEWIZ directory.
- If other files called cpalette.dll are found, they are in conflict with the
- PageWiz software. Normally, on NEC computers, a file with the same name will
- be found in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. In this case, rename the one in
- this directory to something else and then copy the file from PageWiz over to
- C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. The following is an example of how to do this
- from DOS:
-
- 1) type this command:
- ren c:\windows\system\cpalette.dll cpalette.bak
- 2) next, type this command:
- copy c:\pagewiz\cpalette.dll c:\windows\system
-
- "My PC won't enter sleep mode since installing the PageWiz."
-
- It is possible that the PC senses the PageWiz controller running and
- therefore thinks the PC is active. Use the Uninstall program in the Microtek
- PageWiz program group. This disables the autoscan feature of the PageWiz so
- that the controller will not run until either PageSuite or Quick Panel is
- opened. After you are through scanning, click once on the controller icon to
- bring up the program menu and choose "Close".
-
- "An error message appears saying 'PageWiz is not ready.'" or "I get an error
- during scanning that says 'System Buffer Ram Failure.'"
-
- This error appears when your PC cannot communicate with the PageWiz scanner.
- This problem may be related to a number of symptoms. Make sure that your
- scanner is connected to the power and that the cable supplied with the
- PageWiz is connecting your computer's parallel (printer) port to the PageWiz
- scanner. If you have other devices such as a zip drive or tape back-up unit,
- connect them to the port marked "Printer" on the PageWiz. You may also have
- a bad Pagewiz power adapter. If you have access to a voltmeter, the power
- adapter should measure at 17 to 21V dc.
-
- Another cause may be related to the mode (speed) of your computers' parallel
- port. Port modes or types acceptable for the PageWiz are Standard,
- Compatible, Output (Only), Normal, PC, AT, or Centronics. Parallel port modes
- not acceptable are Enhanced, Bi-directional, ECP, EPP, PS2.
-
- Most PC's port modes are configured in the CMOS setup utility program. The
- setup program of your computer is used to tell your computer what the date
- and time are, what types of hard drives and floppy disks it has and other
- types of hardware information. Read your computer's manual to find out how
- to go into your setup program and look for an option that sets up your
- peripherals or your parallel (LPT1, LPT2, or printer) port. Make sure this
- option is set to Standard or More Compatible.
-
- (Special to IBM PS/2 -- Enter the setup program and choose Configure system.
- For parallel port 1 there will be a choice of port negotiation or
- arbitration level. Toggle through the choices until "disabled" is displayed.
- Save the new settings and exit setup.)
-
- Many custom or home-built PC clones have no option for changing the parallel
- port mode in the setup program. This is because their parallel port is part
- of the I/O controller card. If your PC is built in this fashion, the parallel
- port mode is controlled through jumpers on the I/O controller card itself.
- Please refer to the documentation that came with the I/O controller card for
- instructions on changing jumper settings.
-
- Be sure to perform the I/O speed test after making any changes to the
- parallel port settings. To do this, boot the computer in MS DOS or Command
- Prompt mode and type C:\Windows\Twain\PageWiz\Ctta and press the Enter key.
-
- If none of the above suggestions work, swap your scanner with another one
- through the place it was purchased from.
-
- "The scanned images look fuzzy" or "The scanned images are blank";
- also "The images have a ragged black edge on the left side."
-
- If images appear fuzzy make sure that the Output Quality in Scanning Setting
- option under the File menu is set to Fine or Extra Fine; the Normal mode may
- look coarse. If there is no noticeable improvement, disconnect any printer
- cables or other devices that are connected to the port marked "Printer" on
- the PageWiz. Quit Windows and restart your computer in MS DOS or Command
- Prompt mode. From the root directory, "C:\>" type WINDOWS\TWAIN\PAGEWIZ\CTTA.
- This will start the I/O speed test program. When asked if you want to test
- again press "y". This will measure the speed of the parallel port and
- generate a new parallel port setting file for you. When complete type "win"
- to start Windows.
-
- Next, open PageSuite and open the Settings dialog box. Click on the Advanced
- button to open the Advanced Settings box and click on Image Adjustments. Feed
- the scanner a blank white sheet of paper to recalibrate the scanner. Close
- the boxes and try scanning again.
-
- Should you reconnect the printer cable and find that your scanned images
- become fuzzy or faint again then you may have a bi-directional printer cable
- or a defective printer cable. Replace the printer cable with a standard
- parallel cable. Do not replace with a bi-directional cable as this type of
- cable adversely affects image quality of the PageWiz.
-
- If none of the above fixes the problem, quit Windows and delete all PageWiz
- files from the C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN\PAGEWIZ directory. This can be done by
- quitting Windows and changing directory to C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN, then typing
- DELTREE PAGEWIZ and depressing the Enter key. This command will remove the
- PageWiz directory along with all the files in it. Reinstall PageWiz and try
- again. If this directory is not deleted first, the installation program
- will not replace the existing files!
-
- "The images are coarse or have white pixels in them."
-
- The Document Content option may be set wrong in the Setting dialogue box;
- for example, you may be scanning photos using the Text option. Make sure
- you have selected Plain Text for text as well as for black and white charts.
- The Graphics and Photo modes are normally used for scanning picture-like
- images and produce white pixels all over the image similar to photos printed
- in a newspaper.
-
- "Scanned photographs are dark with little detail."
-
- When scanning photos with low contrast, it may be better to scan them in
- grayscale. Choose Scanning Setting from the File pull-down menu of PageSuite
- and select the Advanced option. Set the Ouput Control to Output Data as Gray
- (Multi-level Density), then close all the setting windows. The scanner will
- then scan in grayscale instead of converting everything to halftones.
-
-
- Using Other Twain Applications to Drive the PageWiz
-
- "When I try to scan my documents into my Twain application it transfers to
- PageSuite. How do I stop that?"
-
- These are general scanning procedures from other Twain applications such as
- Winfax, OmniPage Pro, or Wordscan.
-
- - Remove any paper from PageWiz
- - Launch your application
- - From "Scan" or "Acquire" option choose PageWiz
- - When the PageWiz Setting box appears, insert your page into your
- scanner.
-
- If you place the paper into the scanner before the settings box appears, your
- page will be scanned into PageSuite.
