  1. Troubleshooting Common Printers Problems - January 24, 1996

  3. "My printer won't print from any program since installing PageWiz." 
  4.  
  5. Make sure all cable connections are correct and tight. If you have a later 
  6. model printer with advanced diagnostic features, your printer is probably in 
  7. bi-directional mode. There may be communication problems between the printer 
  8. and the PC. Listed below are instructions to switch off  bi-directional mode 
  9. on some popular printer models:
  10.  
  11.  
  12. Hewlett Packard Printers
  13.  
  14. LaserJet 4 Series
  15.  
  16. On LaserJet 4 Series printers equipped with LCD displays, press the "On-Line"
  17. button until the display says "Off-Line". Next press the button marked "Menu"
  18. until "Parallel Menu" is displayed. Press the "Item" button until 
  19. "ADV FUNCTION" is diplayed. Press the key labelled "+/-" so that the display 
  20. shows "ADV FUNCTION=OFF" and then press the printer's "ENTER" key. If the 
  21. display reads "ADV FUNCTION=OFF* " press the "On-Line" button. You are now 
  22. ready to print.

  24. DeskJet 500, 600, and 800 Series
  25.  
  26. The following instructions will ensure that your PageWiz and your HP DeskJet 
  27. Series printer will function properly together:
  28.  
  29. From the File Manager (Win 3.xx) or from the Start button (Win95) perform a 
  30. file search for HP*.exe and search the C: drive. The search should yield 
  31. several files.  Look for any one of these files: HPVCNFIG.EXE, HPFCFG01.EXE,
  32. HPFCFG02.EXE or HPRCFG02.EXE. Double-click on the file to launch the program. 
  33. A screen will then advise that this program is used to modify .ini files. 
  34. Click on the "Continue" button. A new dialog box will appear.
  35.  
  36. If you have the older version of this program there is a "Simple IOD"  
  37. checkbox that must be checked. The newer version will have a box marked 
  38. "bi-directional" that is already checked. Click on the checkbox to remove 
  39. the checkmark.

  41. After marking the appropriate boxes save the new settings by clicking "OK". 
  42. This will modify control values in various *.INI files and disable the need 
  43. for bi-directional communication. Click on the the Restart Windows button. 
  44. When Windows opens again your printer will work from all programs.

  47. Epson  Laser Printers
  48.  
  49. Action Laser 1100 and  1400 Model Printers
  50.  
  51. If you have the Action Laser 1100 or 1400 and can't print go to the Windows 
  52. Print Manager and remove the Epson printer driver. If you have the Action 
  53. Laser 1100 add the Hewlett Packard Laser Jet 3 driver as your default 
  54. printer. For the Action Laser 1400 add the Hewlett Packard Laser Jet 4 driver
  55. as the default printer.

  57. Lexmark Laser Printers
  58.  
  59. With some Lexmark models it is not possible to switch off bi-directional 
  60. communication. If your printer is one of those the best solution is to 
  61. install an inexpensive IBM PC or AT compatible standard mode parallel card as
  62. LPT2. Connect your printer to LPT1 and the  PageWiz to LPT2. After connecting
  63. both devices, quit Windows or restart your computer in MS DOS or Command 
  64. Prompt mode. From the root directory, type c:\windows\twain\pagewiz\ctta and 
  65. press the Enter key. Press "Y" for yes to test the parallel port again.

  70. "My Canon color inkjet printer prints lines that resemble a barcode."
  71.  
  72. If you are using the Microsoft-provided Canon BubbleJet printer driver, you 
  73. have to install drivers that came with your printer. Drivers supplied on 
  74. Microsoft Windows 95 produce this problem.  From the Print Manager, remove 
  75. the current printer driver and install the Canon supplied drivers from the 
  76. floppy disk. If the new drivers do not solve the problem then contact the 
  77. manufacturer for an updated driver diskette.

  79. For a quick workaround you may install the driver for a B/W model, such as 
  80. the BJ200 in the Print Manager, keeping your color driver as the default 
  81. printer. Within PageSuite click on the General Preferences icon and click on 
  82. the Printer setup icon. Click the drop-down button for drivers and highlight 
  83. the new B/W driver.

  85. "My inkjet printer  won't print more than one copy per print command."
  86.  
  87. Many inkjet printers have very little on-board memory so their drivers will 
  88. not allow more than one copy per print command for large files. This a 
  89. safeguard to keep the PC from locking up.  Therefore even though the option 
  90. to print multiple copies seems available, it actually is not. 
  91.  
  92.
