  46. B. Late-breaking news regarding your Windows driver
  47. ===================================================
  48.  
  49. I. User hints
  50. -------------
  51. Printing is very slow
  52. Check your Print Options settings in the Media/Options screen.  If MicroWeave
  53. is selected, monochrome printing will be much slower than usual.  (Color
  54. printing speed is not affected by MicroWeave).  Deselect MicroWeave to increase
  55. print speed.  If you are printing in monochrome, MicroWeave should only be used
  56. for presentation quality printing.
  57.  
  58. Other ways to speed up your printing include turning on High Speed mode,
  59. turning off halftoning, printing in monochrome instead of color, and printing
  60. in a lower resolution.
  61.  
  62. Windows 3.0
  63. The driver does not support Windows 3.0.  Please upgrade to Windows 3.1
  64. or a later version.
  65.  
  66. EGA and CGA displays
  67. The driver does not function properly with EGA and CGA displays.
  68. Either use the standard Windows driver (available from Microsoft)
  69. or upgrade your display to VGA.
  70.  
  71. Freeing up memory
  72. If you need to free up some additional memory when not printing, try closing
  73. the Epson Spooler.  Use Alt-Tab to switch to the spooler and close it in the
  74. normal manner.
  75.  
  76. Image Settings Image does not look good
  77. The image provided works best with displays that support 256 colors or more.
  78. Try changing your display driver (via the Control Panel) to display 256 colors
  79. or more.  If your display adapter only operates at 16 colors and your display
  80. driver does not render the image nicely on screen, try replacing the image
  81. with another of your own choice.  Simply double-click on the image.  You can
  82. then load in any .BMP file which is 1-bit, 4-bit, or 8-bit type (Note that
  83. if you try to load a 24-bit type .BMP file, you will get an "Unsupported Format"
  84. error).  Depending on the image you choose, however, the preview functions may
  85. not work.  If in the future you wish to return to using the Epson-provided image,
  86. it can be loaded by double-clicking the image again.  It is named EPSON.BMP and
  87. is found in your Windows \SYSTEM subdirectory.
  88.  
  89. Dither options, Media Types, etc. cannot be selected
  90. The driver limits the choices you can make to those which produce useful
  91. output.  For example, if you select 720dpi, only the Diffused halftoning
  92. methods are available.  You must also use Special coated paper for 720dpi.
  93.  
  94. Color text does not print correctly
  95. Use one of the Diffused halftone methods.
  96.  
  97. "This driver cannot be updated because it is currently being used by Windows"
  98. This error may occur if you try to reinstall the driver.  Close the
  99. Epson Print Spooler to remove the error and try again.
  100.  
  101. II. Known bugs
  102. --------------
  103. At this time we are aware of the following problems with the Epson Stylus
  104. Series printing system.  If you experience a problem, contact Epson for a
  105. driver update.  The phone number of your nearest Epson subsidiary can be found
  106. inside the back cover of your manual.
  107.  
  108. Restore Button
  109. The Restore button resets the driver to the settings it had when it was opened,
  110. not to the driver default settings.
  111.  
  112. III. Application notes
  113. ----------------------
  114. Microsoft Excel 4.0
  115. Avoid printing multiple copies as this may generate a General Protection Fault.
  116. To print more than one copy, print the document with Copies set to 1, then print
  117. the document again.  To solve the problem upgrade to ver. 4.0a or later.
  118.  
  119. Microsoft Access 1.0
  120. Avoid printing multiple copies as this may generate a General Protection Fault.
  121. To print more than one copy, print the document with Copies set to 1, then
  122. print the document again.  To solve the problem upgrade to a later version.
  123.  
  124. Micrografx Designer 4.0
  125. Imported grayscale images may print as black due to a bug in Designer.
  126. To print correctly, do one of the following:
  127. a) Change your Ink setting to Color (if you have a color printer), or
  128. b) Select a non-Diffused Halftone method, or
  129. c) Set your video display adaptor to 256 color mode.
  130.  
  131. Adobe Photoshop 2.5
  132. Printing to a file may cause a General Protection Fault.  Upgrade to ver. 2.5.1.
  133.  
  134. S3 video drivers
  135. If your graphics card uses S3 chips, you may find that some parts of the driver
  136. do not display correctly on screen.  This does not affect printing.  Contact the
  137. manufacturer of your card for a video driver update.
  138.  
  139. IV. Using with older Epson Stylus printers
  140. ------------------------------------------
  141. The Stylus 300, 800 and 1000 models are not supported.  If you intend to use
  142. this driver with one of these printers, select Stylus 800+ when installing
  143. the driver and note the following restrictions:
  144.  
  145. a) MicroWeave will not function correctly
  146. b) You must run the Calibration utility to enable High Speed mode 
  147. c) Correct operation is not guaranteed
  148.  
  149.  
  150. C. Calibrating your printer
  151. ===========================
  152.  
  153. I. Running the calibration utility
  154. ----------------------------------
  155. TO GET THE HIGHEST QUALITY PRINTING YOU MUST CALIBRATE YOUR PRINTER!
  156.  
  157. The Calibration utility is called CALIBRAT.EXE and is located in the \WINDOWS
  158. directory of the floppy disk that came with your printer.  This utility runs in
  159. DOS, so you must either exit Windows or open a DOS window in Windows to run it.
  160.  
  161. We recommend that you copy the utility to your hard disk and put it in a
  162. convenient directory such as C:\UTILITY.  You can also run the utility from
  163. the floppy disk if you wish.
  164.  
  165. Run the utility by moving to the directory where the utility is and typing:
  166.  
  167. CALIBRAT
  168.  
  169. Then press <Enter> on your keyboard and follow the directions on the screen.

  172. II. Calibrating High Speed mode printing
  173. ----------------------------------------
  174. Selecting High Speed mode in your printer driver causes your printer to print
  175. bidirectionally.  Normally your Stylus printer prints from left to right only
  176. (i.e. unidirectionally).  In High Speed mode, however, the printer prints from
  177. left to right and also from right to left.  This lets you print much faster.
  178.  
  179. Although your printer is calibrated in the factory, it may become uncalibrated
  180. during shipping.  You should only have to calibrate your printer once.
  181. If you find it necessary to calibrate your printer again, you can easily use
  182. this utility to recalibrate your printer.
  183.  
  184. If you suspect that your printer needs calibration, the easiest way
  185. to check is by turning off High Speed mode and printing your document
  186. again.  If the output quality improves, you should recalibrate your printer.
  187.  
  188. You should recalibrate your printer if:
  189.  
  190.   i) vertical lines in your output appear jagged
  191.  ii) letters appear to be skewed or split
  192. iii) wavy gaps appear in halftoned images
  193.  
  194. III. Aligning Black and Color output
  195. ------------------------------------
  196. If you have a color printer (such as the Stylus COLOR), it may be necessary
  197. to align the Black print head with the Color print head.
  198.  
  199. You should only have to align your print heads once.  If you think that
  200. your print heads have somehow become misaligned, you can easily realign
  201. them with the calibration utility.
  202.  
  203. You should realign your print heads if:
  204.  
  205.  i) Black output and Color output that should line up doesn't
  206. ii) Unwanted white spaces appear between Black and Color output
  207.  
  208. IV. Using a Mouse or Keyboard
  209. -----------------------------
  210. Using a Mouse
  211. If your mouse does not work when you run the calibration program,
  212. you need to exit the program and then install a mouse driver.
  213. You'll find the instructions for installing a mouse driver in the
  214. documentation that came with your mouse.
  215.  
  216. Using the Keyboard
  217. If you don't want to use a mouse, simply use the following
  218. keys to move within the calibration program:
  219.  
  220. Tab        Moves you among the options on the screen
  221. <Arrow Keys>    Moves you to different items within an option
  222. <Enter>        Selects an option
  223.  
  224. V. NOTES
  225. --------
  226. This utility resets some of the default values in your printer.
  227. To get best results from your printer using High Speed mode, we
  228. recommend that you do not change the print direction setting after
  229. using the utility.  The other settings may be changed as necessary.
