- I. INTRODUCTION
- -----------------
- This version of OS/2 Warp Drivers will not work on OS/2 2.1 nor
- 2.11. If you need drivers for these previous versions of OS/2 system,
- please contact your respective manufacturer.
-
- The supported resolutions and refresh rates are:
- 640x480 256 colors at 60Hz, 72Hz, 90Hz
- 800x600 256 colors at 56Hz, 60Hz, 72Hz, 90Hz
- 1024x768 256 colors at 43Hz(I), 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz
- 1280x1024 256 colors at 43Hz(I), 60Hz
- 640x480 64K hi-colors at 60Hz, 72Hz, 90Hz
- 800x600 64K hi-colors at 56Hz, 60Hz, 72Hz, 75Hz
- 1024x768 64K hi-colors at 43Hz(I), 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz
-
- ** (I): Interlaced refresh rates
-
- This driver supports multi-resolution and multi-refresh-rate selections
- without having to install and copy different drivers at selection time.
- This means that you only do installation once and that's all. Performance
- of this driver has been greatly enhanced too as much more graphics hardware
- acceleration power are being utilized.
-
- The main tool for installing display drivers is the DSPINSTL.EXE. In
- general, the steps involving Stealth64 2001 drivers installation follow the
- steps outlined in the IBM manual, "Using the Operating System" very
- closely. You could refer to the section "Installing a New Display
- Adapter" in that manual for more details before following the steps
- below. Also, if you encounter some problems after this installation,
- you should be able to recover the standard VGA display settings by following
- the section "Recovering from an Incorrect Display Type Selection" in
- the IBM manual. (During system reboot, before OS/2 logo is shown, there
- is a white rectangle on the upper left corner of the screen. Hit <ATL-F1>
- simultaneously and you will get a text descriptions with some options
- Then type "V" to select the restoration of standard VGA display resolution.)
-
- If you prefer to back up modified/replaced files, you will find the list of
- these files in Section "V. FILE DESCRIPTIONS" of this readme.
-
- To select different display resolutions and refresh rates, please
- refer to Section "III. SELECTING DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS AND REFRESH RATES"
- of this readme. BEWARE that the choice that you select could damage the
- monitors that could not sustain high refresh rates.
-
-
- *** Notes on WIN-OS/2 and SEAMLESS Windows Support: ***
- *** In order to have WIN-OS/2 and SEAMLESS Windows capabilities, be sure ***
- *** to go through the proper OS/2 Operating System installation as ***
- *** outlined in IBM OS/2 Installation Manual. (You will need to have ***
- *** Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Win-OS/2 installed in your system prior ***
- *** to OS/2 installation. Then be sure to select "WIN-OS/2 Support" ***
- *** option during initial OS/2 installation through Selective Install ***
- *** Utility. ***
-
-
-
- II. INSTALLING DRIVERS
- -----------------------
- Before you start this installation process, you MUST make sure that you
- are in standard VGA mode. Use Selective Install utility to select standard
- VGA display resolution or follow the VGA recovering process mentioned in
- Section "I. INTRODUCTION". Always refer to IBM user manual when you have
- doubts.
-
- Step 1: Make sure that you have the Stealth64 Graphics 2001 OS/2 driver
- diskette in the appropriate floppy drive. The disk label should
- specify that it is for OS/2 WARP display drivers.
-
- Step 2: Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen command prompt.
-
- Step 3: Make sure that the command prompt shows the ***RIGHT DRIVE LETTER***
- where driver diskette resides. (For example, if the diskette is
- in floppy drive A, type A: followed by an <Enter> first before doing
- the instruction below.)
- Type DSPINSTL followed by an <Enter>.
-
- Step 4: A Panel appears with a few options on it.
- Select "Primary Display" option. At this time and in subsequent
- steps, you could always click on Help to get some on-line help
- messages or click on Cancel to stop from being going forwards.
-
- Step 5: Another panel appears asking you to verify if you have the
- "Stealth64 Graphics 2001 SVGA" display adapter. Select OK.
-
- Step 6: The next panel asks if you would like to "Install Using Default for
- Monitor Type" or some other utility. Select the option with that
- says Using Default.
-
- Step 7: "Determining hardware configuration..." is what you will be seeing
- next. Then the screen goes flickering for a few seconds. Once the
- flickers stop, the screen will prompt you for the source of
- Stealth64 Graphics 2001 drivers. It should show the Floppy Drive
- letter where diskette resides. If not, choose the right drive letter.
- Select "Install..." to continue.
-
- Step 8: Some windows start appearing, showing the directories where drivers
- and related are copied into. Once these windows stop, a message box
- will inform you to re-start the system. Select OK to close this box
- and to get back to OS/2 window command prompt.
-
- Step 9: The better way to re-start the system is to issue the shut-down
- command. You could do so by selecting the "Shut down" button in
- LaunchPad window or from Desktop Pop-up menu (move your mouse
- pointer to an empty area then click on right mouse button. You will
- see a "Shut down" menu item.)
- The other way is to hit <CTRL-ALT-DEL> keys simulationsly and the
- system will reboot.
-
- Once the system's re-start process is completed, you will see a new
- screen with new default display resolution which is 640 pixel-wide by 480
- height with 256 colors at 60Hz refresh rate. You could also make a new
- display resolution selection immediately after Step 9 (before Step 10) by
- going through Section "III. SELECTING DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS AND REFRESH
- RATES".
-
- Under the directory <BootDrive>:\OS2\INSTALL, there is a log file called
- DSPINSTL.LOG. You can look into this file for information regarding what
- files are being installed and if you go through DSPINSTL process successfully.
-
-
-
- III. SELECTING DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS AND REFRESH RATES
- ------------------------------------------------------
- You have to go through Section "II. INSTALLING DRIVERS" first.
-
- ***************************************************************************
- *** BEWARE that the refresh rate that you select may not be supported ***
- *** by your monitor. This could damage your monitor. Please refer to ***
- *** your monitor's specification if you are not sure. ***
- ***************************************************************************
-
- Step 1: Open "OS/2 System" Folder by double-clicking "OS/2 System" Icon.
-
- Step 2: Double-click "System Setup" icon in OS/2 System Folder that you
- just opened.
-
- Step 3: Look for the icon with the title "System". Double-click it.
-
- Step 4: On the first page of this "System - Setting" notebook window,
- you should see Screen resolution with refresh rate. Choose
- the ones that you prefer. When you click on a selection,
- some message will appear indicating that you need to shut
- down the system to have your choice to be effective.
-
- Step 5: OPTIONAL.
- If you click on the right arrow at the bottom of the page
- (which says "Screen - Page 1 of 2"), you will see Page 2.
- Now, the page says "Change Display Configuration." The
- pull-down menu under "Display name" should indicate "DEFAULT"
- if you have not made any monitor selection yet. To choose
- the monitor configuration that matches (or matches closely to)
- your current monitor, click the down-ward arrow of this
- pull-down menu first, then select a monitor name.
-
- You could click on the "View Current Configuration" button to
- see if the monitor selection you just made matches with the
- refresh rates supported by the Stealth64 2001 driver.
-
- Step 6: Restart the system.
- (See Step 9 of Section "II. INSTALLING DRIVERS").
-
-
- If you happen to select a refresh rate that is causing heavy flickers or
- even shuts down your monitor, immediately choose a much lower refresh rate
- (the default 640x480x256 60Hz or 43Hz Interlaced resolutions are usually
- safer) and restart the system. If the screen is not viewable, you have
- to re-start the system using <CTRL-ATL-DEL> sequence and follow the
- standard VGA restoration process as mentioned in Section "I. INTRODUCTION".
- Then within standard VGA resolution, re-do the installation process
- again by following Section "II. INSTALLING DRIVERS".
-
-
-
- IV. SELECTING REFRESH RATES (ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE)
- -------------------------------------------------
- If after installing the drivers and going through Section "III. SELECTING
- DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS AND REFRESH RATES", you still CANNOT find an appropriate
- monitor to choose from (Step 5 of Section III), you can TRY the instructions
- below. Usually, you only need to do the steps listed in this Section when your
- monitor can sustain much higher refresh rates than listed in OS/2
- "System - Setting" notebook (please refer to Steps 1 - 4 of Section III).
-
- You need to be fairly knowledgeable in your monitor's capabilities in terms of
- horizontal and vertical refresh rates before choosing the refresh rates that
- you would like to set to.
-
- ***************************************************************************
- *** BEWARE that the refresh rate that you select may not be supported ***
- *** by your monitor. This could damage your monitor. Please refer to ***
- *** your monitor's specification if you are not sure. ***
- ***************************************************************************
-
- Step 1: Open a DOS Full Screen Window under OS/2.
-
- Step 2: Change your directory to <BootDrive>:\OS2
-
- Step 3: Type SVGA ON MONITOR followed by an <ENTER>.
-
- Step 4: A menu appears asking you to enter the key for your preferred
- refresh rate.
-
- Step 5: Enter the key of your chosen refresh rate followed by an <Enter>.
- You can also enter a list of keys with space between each key.
-
- Step 6: The screen will be flickering for a few seconds before you get
- the DOS prompt back.
-
- Step 7: Close DOS Full Screen Window by typing EXIT on command prompt.
-
- Step 8: Re-start the system.
- (See Step 9 of Section "II. INSTALLING DRIVERS").
-
- Step 9: When the system start up process completes, follow the steps in
- Section "III. SELECTING DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS AND REFRESH RATES"
- for the resolution desired. This time, you will not be able to
- see any refresh rate listing in the "System - Setting" notebook
- as refresh rate for each resolution is pre-set by the steps you
- just went through.
-
-
- To recover from this alternative to the regular refresh rate selection, follow
- the following steps:
-
- Step 1: Open a DOS Full Screen Window under OS/2.
-
- Step 2: Change your directory to <BootDrive>:\OS2
-
- Step 3: Type SVGA ON INIT followed by an <ENTER>.
-
- Step 4: Close DOS Full Screen Window by typing EXIT on command prompt.
-
- Step 5: Re-start the system.
- (See Step 9 of Section "II. INSTALLING DRIVERS").
-
- Step 6: Follow the steps in Section "III. SELECTING DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS
- AND REFRESH RATES" for the resolution and refresh rate desired.
