  8. information that has changed or is different from the Installation
  9. Guide, as well as some other useful tips.

  13. ============================================================

  15. Information for Windows Users
  16. -----------------------------
  17.  
  18. This version of TurboDLD is designed to specifically support DOS
  19. versions of AutoCAD 10/386, 11/386, 12, and 13, as well as DOS only
  20. versions of 3D Studio.  Panacea does not currently support Windows
  21. versions of these products.  Visit Spacetec IMC Corporation's web 
  22. site for information on 3D-I ALWAYS(TM) 3D Display & Motion Control 
  23. Add-On Software for AutoCAD for Windows 95 and Windows NT, and 
  24. Spaceware(r) Animotion(TM) for 3D Studio Max.

  28. AutoCAD Release 10/386 & Release 11 Limitations
  29. -----------------------------------------------
  30. TurboDLD has the following limitations when installed for use with
  31. AutoCAD Release 10/386 & Release 11:
  32.      
  33.       1. Cannot use the "Text Window on Single" Pop-up Text Window.
  34.       
  35.       2. Due to the manner in which AutoCAD Release 10/386 works,
  36.      the TurboDLD function DLDBPMODE, as well as the MACH-12 
  37.      compatible ZI, ZO commands are not currently supported in 
  38.      this TurboDLD release when using AutoCAD Release 10/386.
  39.  
  40.  
  41. Font Selection          
  42. ---------------
  43.    TurboDLD includes an array of fonts for AutoCAD menus and dialogs.
  44.    In addition to the Panacea supplied fonts, TurboDLD also supports 
  45.    .BDF fonts. Primarily for foreign AutoCAD support. .BDF fonts are 
  46.    usually public domain and are easily available through Shareware.
  47.    AutoCAD Release 12/13 includes various .BDF fonts
  48.  
  49.    Please note that .BDF fonts are not supported for XGA and 8514/A
  50.    graphics boards. Only Panacea supplied fonts are available those 
  51.    boards.
  52.  
  53.  
  54.    Enabling .BDF Fonts
  55.    -------------------
  56.    In order to enable .BDF font support in TurboDLD, you must either
  57.    start AutoCAD from your main AutoCAD sub-directory, or set the DLDFONT 
  58.    environment variable prior to starting AutoCAD. Syntax of DLDFONT is:
  59.  
  60.         SET DLDFONT = {FONTDIR}
  61.  
  62.    where {FONTDIR} is the full path name to the sub-directory which 
  63.    contains the .BDF fonts.
  64.  
  65.    If DLDFONT is not set, TurboDLD will look for a \DRV directory
  66.    off of the default AutoCAD directory. If no .BDF fonts are found
  67.    in the DRV directory, then only Panacea supplied font options 
  68.    will be available.
  69.  
  70.  
  71.    Choosing .BDF Fonts 
  72.    -------------------
  73.    To use a .BDF font in TurboDLD, choose the Basic Configuration menu
  74.    "Select Font From List" option to display a list of available fonts.
  75.    The list will contain available fonts, limited by the settings of the
  76.    DLDFONT environment variable and the font filter chosen in the Basic 
  77.    Configuration menu Select Font Filter option.
  78.    
  79.    
  80.    Limiting Font Selections
  81.    ------------------------
  82.    If you have many .BDF fonts on your system and you wish to select only 
  83.    a certain style of font, TurboDLD offers a filtering mechanism to allow 
  84.    you to select only a certain types of fonts based on their internal
  85.    CHARSET_REGISTRY name or Code Page definition. 
  86.    
  87.    To select a specific .BDF font type, from the Basic Configuration menu, 
  88.    use the Select Font Filer option and then select an available .BDF font 
  89.    type. If you wish to see all installed fonts, choosse All Fonts. Your 
  90.    font filter will be in effect when you select the Select Font Filter 
  91.    menu option.
  92.  
  93.    Font Size and AutoCAD
  94.    ---------------------
  95.    When using a font size in which the height is more than twice the width
  96.    (i.e., 7x15) you may experience text and other display problems within 
  97.    some dialogs. This is due to the way AutoCAD calculates display positions 
  98.    using font character values.
  99.  
  100.  
  101.  
  102. Graphics Mode Text Window          
  103. --------------------------
  104.  
  105. Please note that the Text window on graphics screen works with AutoCAD 
  106. Release 12/13 only.
  107.  
  108.  
  109.    Text Window Caveats
  110.    -------------------
  111.     
  112.     RCONFIG
  113.     -------
  114.     If TurboDLD is configured for "Text Window on Single" and
  115.     RCONFIG is used to configure AVE Render, you may have problems
  116.     selecting menu items. If this happens, type CTRL-C to exit
  117.     RCONFIG and return to the AutoCAD drawing editor. Then 
  118.     reconfigure TurboDLD for "Single" screen operation and 
  119.     then run RCONFIG again.
  120.  
  121.     in R13, use of the "Text Window on Single" and doing an RCONFIG
  122.     may blank the selections in the side menus. They will reappear
  123.     after configuration is complete and you have hit the F1 key. 
  124.  
  125.     Random Characters in Menu Areas
  126.     --------------------------------
  127.     On some graphics boards, when TurboDLD is configured for "Text 
  128.     Window on Single" random characters characters may appear in the 
  129.     AutoCAD menu areas. If this occurs, configure TurboDLD for "Single"
  130.     screen mode. Do not continue to use the text window, unpredictable 
  131.     results may occur.
  132.  
  133.     Networked AutoCAD Installations
  134.     -------------------------------
  135.     On a networked AutoCAD Release 12 system, if the maximum number
  136.     of users is reached, an alert dialog box is displayed. When
  137.     using TurboDLD in the "Single" screen mode an abnormal AutoCAD
  138.     termination may occur instead of the alert dialog box. If you 
  139.     think this may be a problem, configure TurboDLD for the "Text 
  140.     Window on Single" option.
  141.  
  142.  
  143.     WCEdit
  144.     ------
  145.     Elsa's WCEdit utility may appear to hang when TurboDLD is 
  146.     configured for the "Text Window on Single" mode. In fact, WCEdit
  147.     has not hung - instead it is waiting for user input. When the
  148.     TurboDLD text window is enabled, WCEdit still thinks TurboDLD
  149.     is in a text-mode screen and tries to write directly to it. This
  150.     will not work. Press Ctrl-X to return to AutoCAD from WCEdit.
  151.     If you wish to use WCEdit with TurboDLD, configure for "Single"
  152.     screen mode.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. AutoCAD Command Line Cursor          
  156. ---------------------------
  157.       
  158. A "-" cursor has been added to the AutoCAD Command line to identify the
  159. current AutoCAD cursor location.
  160.  
  161.  
  162. New TurboDLD Command
  163. --------------------
  164.  
  165. In some instances, lines may overwrite AutoCAD menu areas. To restore
  166. the menu areas, you may either do a flip-screen to the text screen or
  167. issue the new TurboDLD command DLDRESTORE.
  168.  
  169.  
  170. Graphics Platform Specific Problems
  171. -----------------------------------
  172.  
  173.     ATI VGA Wonder
  174.     --------------
  175.     When using some ATI VGA Wonder boards in a dual screen system 
  176.     configured for single screen use, make sure that you start
  177.     AutoCAD from the VGA screen. Otherwise, flip screens will result
  178.     in a weird combination of monochrome and VGA screens. 
  179.  
  180.     
  181.     Monochrome Dual Screen Configurations
  182.     -------------------------------------
  183.     When using a monochrome display in a dual screen configuration it may
  184.     be necessary to start AutoCAD from the monochrome screen instead of
  185.     the graphics screen. This is especially true in cases where the 
  186.     graphics display board also has a VGA chip on-board. To switch to
  187.     the monochrome screen type: 
  188.     
  189.         MODE MONO 
  190.     
  191.     at the DOS prompt. To switch back to the graphics screen, type: 
  192.     
  193.         MODE CO80
  194.     
  195.     You may also add these commands to your AutoCAD start-up file for 
  196.     automatic execution.
  197.  
  198.  
  199.  
  200. 3D Studio
  201. ---------
  202.  
  203. In 3D Studio v3, selection of a display font larger than 8x14 at 
  204. 640x480 resolution will cause 3D Studio to display a blank screen
  205. which you cannot recover from. This is a limitation of 3D Studio.
  206. If a blank screen occurs, delete 3DADI.CFG and then reconfigure
  207. TurboDLD for an 8x14 or smaller font.
  208.  
  209.  
  210. The PANA3DS.BAT file copied to your TurboDLD sub-directory during 
  211. installation is used for 3D Studio configuration. This file should 
  212. be run prior to starting 3D Studio.
  213.  
  214. For all versions of 3D Studio, rendering at color depths higher 
  215. than 256 colors is not supported.  See the section on "Rendering 
  216. with TurboDLD" in the user's guide for more information.
  217.  
  218.  
  219. DLDCFG and AutoCAD Release 12/13
  220. --------------------------------
  221.  
  222. The DLDCFG environment variable is used by TurboDLD to locate its
  223. configuration files. DLDCFG must be set for AutoCAD Release 10/386,
  224. Release 11, AutoShade, and 3D Studio.
  225.  
  226. When using Release 12/13, however, DLDCFG is not required. TurboDLD
  227. will look for its configuration files in the same directory as the
  228. RCTURBOD.EXP file. However, if DLDCFG is set, TurboDLD will use
  229. DLDCFG to locate its configuration files. This could be useful in
  230. a networked environment to allow individual users of a network-based
  231. version of TurboDLD to maintain their own local TurboDLD configuration.

  234.  
  235. Upgrading from DLD386 or MACH-12
  236. --------------------------------
  237.  
  238. If you are using Release 12/13, you do not need to run DLD386's
  239. FASTACAD.BAT first. FASTACAD.BAT sets four environment variables
  240. including DLDCFG, DSPADI, RDPADI, and RCPADI. None of these
  241. environment variables are needed with Release 12/13 and TurboDLD. If
  242. you set these variables in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or a batch file used
  243. to start Release 12/13, we strongly recommend that you remove them.
  244.  
  245.  
  246. General Information 
  247. -------------------
  248. If you have low amounts of CPU RAM and less than 20mb of available
  249. hard disk space you should use the -SWAPCHK ON switch to configure
  250. AutoCAD. This switch will give you the option of saving your
  251. drawing when AutoCAD runs out of swap space.   The way you
  252. configure this is to change into your AutoCAD program sub-directory
  253. and at the prompt type:
  254.  
  255.         CFIG386 ACAD -SWAPCHK ON
  256.  
  257.  
  258.  
  259.     AutoCAD Revisions
  260.     -----------------
  261.     Please be aware that there is a C4 revision to AutoCAD Release 13.
  262.     This version of TurboDLD does support this release.
  263.  
  264.     Rendering Resolution Options 
  265.     ----------------------------
  266.     The Rendering screen configuration menu will be available only when
  267.     configuring the Rendering screens of AVE Render, AutoShade 2 with 
  268.     RenderMan or 3D Studio.
  269.     
  270.     Also note that TurboDLD is a combined Display/Rendering driver
  271.     therefore, you should select that option from AVE Render's
  272.     configuration menu.

  274.  
  275.     Rendering Caveats
  276.     -----------------
  277.     When rendering to a viewport, unpredictible behavior may result if 
  278.     your rendering resolution/color depth is set differently than your 
  279.     display resolution/color depth.  This could include incorrect colors 
  280.     in the rendered image, corrupted displays, or unpredictible system 
  281.     behavior.  We recommend setting your rendering resolution and color 
  282.     depth to the same as your display resolution and color depth.

  284.  
  285.     Graphics Board Selection
  286.     ------------------------
  287.     If your graphics board is not listed in the Graphics Board Selection
  288.     menu and you know which chip or platform your board is based on, you
  289.     may choose the Generic selection for that chip type. If you are not
  290.     sure which platform your graphics board is based on, please refer to
  291.     your user's manual or contact the board manufacturer for more
  292.     information.
  293.  
  294.  
  295.     Dialog Commands
  296.     ---------------
  297.     If the AutoCAD Release 12/13 file and command dialog box usage is 
  298.     disabled (i.e. setting CMDIA = 0 and FILEDIA = 0 ) and a drawing
  299.     with an unresolved XREF is opened from the text screen, an error
  300.     or system hang will occur. This is a bug with AutoCAD and ADI 
  301.     drivers. To avoid this, use the Text Window on Single configuration
  302.     option.
  303.  
  304.  
  305.     Color Considerations
  306.     --------------------
  307.     In DLDCOLOR Object mode, when changing the background color, the 
  308.     new background color is swapped with the old in order to eliminate
  309.     the possibility of having a Drawing color the same as the background
  310.     color, causing a blank screen.
  311.  
  312.     Caution: Cursol should not be BG
  313.     Note: (Esc) then (A)di reset if get lost
  314.  
  315.  
  316.     You may change the highlight color selection for the side bar menus
  317.     using DLDCOLOR in Object mode.
  318.  
  319.  
  320. Documentation Changes
  321. ---------------------
  322.  
  323. In "Chapter 4 - Changing Colors", p.4-2, the second paragraph should read: 
  324.  
  325.     "...change by moving the highlight box around with the arrow cursor 
  326.     control keys and pressing ENTER..." You may use the up and down arrows
  327.     as well as the left and right.
  328.

  331. II. What if I Have Problems?
  332. ============================
  333.  
  334. The answers to the most often asked technical support questions can be
  335. found in the Tips, Tricks & Troubleshooting chapter of your "TurboDLD
  336. Installation Guide". Please check there first.
  337.  
  338. If you are having a problem which you cannot resolve, and you need to
  339. contact Technical Support, please try to duplicate, and document the
  340. steps required to reproduce the problem.  As you document the problem,
  341. list your current system configuration, including video board, resolution,
  342. number of colors configured, etc. Also, if possible, try to duplicate the
  343. problem with an AutoCAD sample file so that it can be easily re-created
  344. by a technician, if necessary. To contact Technical Support, refer to
  345. Appendix A in your "TurboDLD Installation Guide".
  346.  
  347. Please note that Technical Support for Panacea's OEM software products
  348. (defined as: Software bundled as a component part of a hardware product)
  349. is the responsibility of the hardware manufacturer, not Panacea. If you
  350. encounter a problem with TurboDLD, and cannot find a satisfactory answer
  351. from the reference manual or from the hardware manufacturer, Panacea
