  8. information that has changed or is different from the Installation
  9. Guide, as well as some other useful tips.

  12. I. TIPS/ERRATA/FEATURES/REVISIONS
  13. ============================================================
  14.  
  15. Support for AutoCAD R12/Windows and R13/Windows
  16. -----------------------------------------------
  17.  
  18. This version of TurboDLD is designed to specifically support DOS
  19. versions of AutoCAD 10/386, 11/386, 12, and 13. Panacea is currently
  20. developing a driver which will support AutoCAD for Windows.
  21. Registered users of TurboDLD will be notified when this driver is
  22. available.

  26. AutoCAD Release 10/386 & Release 11 Limitations
  27. -----------------------------------------------
  28. TurboDLD has the following limitations when installed for use with
  29. AutoCAD Release 10/386 & Release 11:
  30.      
  31.       1. Cannot use the "Text Window on Single" Pop-up Text Window.
  32.       
  33.       2. Due to the manner in which AutoCAD Release 10/386 works,
  34.      the TurboDLD function DLDBPMODE, as well as the MACH-12 
  35.      compatible ZI, ZO commands are not currently supported in 
  36.      this TurboDLD release when using AutoCAD Release 10/386.
  37.  
  38.  
  39. Font Selection          
  40. ---------------
  41.    TurboDLD includes an array of fonts for AutoCAD menus and dialogs.
  42.    In addition to the Panacea supplied fonts, TurboDLD also supports 
  43.    .BDF fonts. Primarily for foreign AutoCAD support. .BDF fonts are 
  44.    usually public domain and are easily available through Shareware.
  45.    AutoCAD Release 12 includes various .BDF fonts
  46.  
  47.    Please note that .BDF fonts are not supported for XGA and 8514/A
  48.    graphics boards. Only Panacea supplied fonts are available those 
  49.    boards.
  50.  
  51.  
  52.    Enabling .BDF Fonts
  53.    -------------------
  54.    In order to enable .BDF font support in TurboDLD, you must either
  55.    start AutoCAD from your main AutoCAD sub-directory, or set the DLDFONT 
  56.    environment variable prior to starting AutoCAD. Syntax of DLDFONT is:
  57.  
  58.         SET DLDFONT = {FONTDIR}
  59.  
  60.    where {FONTDIR} is the full path name to the sub-directory which 
  61.    contains the .BDF fonts.
  62.  
  63.    If DLDFONT is not set, TurboDLD will look for a \DRV directory
  64.    off of the default AutoCAD directory. If no .BDF fonts are found
  65.    in the DRV directory, then only Panacea supplied font options 
  66.    will be available.
  67.  
  68.  
  69.    Choosing .BDF Fonts 
  70.    -------------------
  71.    To use a .BDF font in TurboDLD, choose the Basic Configuration menu
  72.    "Select Font From List" option to display a list of available fonts.
  73.    The list will contain available fonts, limited by the settings of the
  74.    DLDFONT environment variable and the font filter chosen in the Basic 
  75.    Configuration menu Select Font Filter option.
  76.    
  77.    
  78.    Limiting Font Selections
  79.    ------------------------
  80.    If you have many .BDF fonts on your system and you wish to select only 
  81.    a certain style of font, TurboDLD offers a filtering mechanism to allow 
  82.    you to select only a certain types of fonts based on their internal
  83.    CHARSET_REGISTRY name or Code Page definition. 
  84.    
  85.    To select a specific .BDF font type, from the Basic Configuration menu, 
  86.    use the Select Font Filer option and then select an available .BDF font 
  87.    type. If you wish to see all installed fonts, choosse All Fonts. Your 
  88.    font filter will be in effect when you select the Select Font Filter 
  89.    menu option.
  90.  
  91.    Font Size and AutoCAD
  92.    ---------------------
  93.    When using a font size in which the height is more than twice the width
  94.    (i.e., 7x15) you may experience text and other display problems within 
  95.    some dialogs. This is due to the way AutoCAD calculates display positions 
  96.    using font character values.

  99. Graphics Mode Text Window          
  100. --------------------------
  101.  
  102. Please note that the Text window on graphics screen works with AutoCAD 
  103. Release 12 and 13 only.
  104.  
  105.  
  106.    Text Window Caveats
  107.    -------------------
  108.     
  109.     RCONFIG
  110.     -------
  111.     If TurboDLD is configured for "Text Window on Single" and
  112.     RCONFIG is used to configure AVE Render, you may have problems
  113.     selecting menu items. If this happens, type CTRL-C to exit
  114.     RCONFIG and return to the AutoCAD drawing editor. Then 
  115.     reconfigure TurboDLD for "Single" screen operation and 
  116.     then run RCONFIG again.
  117.  
  118.     Random Characters in Menu Areas
  119.     --------------------------------
  120.     On some graphics boards, when TurboDLD is configured for "Text 
  121.     Window on Single" random characters characters may appear in the 
  122.     AutoCAD menu areas. If this occurs, configure TurboDLD for "Single"
  123.     screen mode. Do not continue to use the text window, unpredictable 
  124.     results may occur.
  125.  
  126.     Networked AutoCAD Installations
  127.     -------------------------------
  128.     On a networked AutoCAD Release 12 system, if the maximum number
  129.     of users is reached, an alert dialog box is displayed. When
  130.     using TurboDLD in the "Single" screen mode an abnormal AutoCAD
  131.     termination may occur instead of the alert dialog box. If you 
  132.     think this may be a problem, configure TurboDLD for the "Text 
  133.     Window on Single" option.
  134.  
  135.  
  136.     WCEdit
  137.     ------
  138.     Elsa's WCEdit utility may appear to hang when TurboDLD is 
  139.     configured for the "Text Window on Single" mode. In fact, WCEdit
  140.     has not hung - instead it is waiting for user input. When the
  141.     TurboDLD text window is enabled, WCEdit still thinks TurboDLD
  142.     is in a text-mode screen and tries to write directly to it. This
  143.     will not work. Press Ctrl-X to return to AutoCAD from WCEdit.
  144.     If you wish to use WCEdit with TurboDLD, configure for "Single"
  145.     screen mode.
  146.  
  147.  
  148. AutoCAD Command Line Cursor          
  149. ---------------------------
  150.       
  151. A "-" cursor has been added to the AutoCAD Command line to identify the
  152. current AutoCAD cursor location.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. New TurboDLD Command
  156. --------------------
  157.  
  158. In some instances, lines may overwrite AutoCAD menu areas. To restore
  159. the menu areas, you may either do a flip-screen to the text screen or
  160. issue the new TurboDLD command DLDRESTORE.
  161.  
  162.  
  163. Graphics Platform Specific Problems
  164. -----------------------------------
  165.  
  166.     XGA
  167.     ---
  168.     If you are using an original XGA, it is perfectly normal to see the
  169.     following message come up under AutoCAD and 3D Studio:
  170.  
  171.             DMQS Not Found!
  172.  
  173.     If you have an XGA-2 and this message comes up, it means that you
  174.     have either not properly installed the board, or not properly installed
  175.     the DMQS software that should have come with your board.
  176.  
  177.     
  178.     XGA & IIT AGX
  179.     -------------
  180.     This version of TurboDLD does not support boards using either IBM XGA
  181.     chips or IIT's AGX chips in 16 color modes. Use the 256 color modes
  182.     instead.
  183.     
  184.  
  185.     S3-based Graphics Boards
  186.     ------------------------
  187.     The 24-bit modes (16 million colors) for some S3 boards are not
  188.     supported in this TurboDLD release.
  189.  
  190.     801/805-based S3 boards with only one megabyte of video memory will
  191.     not display colors properly at 32k or 64k colors (15 or 16 BPP modes).
  192.  
  193.  
  194.     TIGA-based Graphics Boards
  195.     --------------------------
  196.     If you are using AutoCAD 10/386, it will be necessary to run the 
  197.     AutoCAD 11 NEWDX.EXE utility to update the Phar Lap DOS extender to 
  198.     run properly with TurboDLD.
  199.  
  200.      
  201.        NEC Multisync Graphics Engine
  202.        -----------------------------
  203.        NEC Multisync Graphics Engine based TIGA boards may leave errant 
  204.        crosshairs on the screen under dialog boxes, menus and with the 
  205.        spy glass. Also, selecting fonts other than the default for the MGE 
  206.        may cause unpredictable results.
  207.  
  208.        When configuring for an NEC Multi Graphics Engine, add the following
  209.        line to the DLDSETUP.DAT file created by the TurboDLD setup program.
  210.  
  211.           TIGA REINIT
  212.  
  213.        The above line may be placed anywhere in the file provided it is not 
  214.        preceded by a ;. This will reinitialize the graphics screen when 
  215.        returning from a flip screen.
  216.  
  217.  
  218.     Weitek P9000
  219.     ------------
  220.     With P9000-based graphics boards, erasing small objects or moving many
  221.     objects may result in stray pixels being left on the screen. Issue a 
  222.     REDRAW to remove them from the screen.
  223.  
  224.        Configuration Problems
  225.        ----------------------
  226.  
  227.        When configuring for any P9000, if you cannot locate your graphics
  228.        board or a generic Weitek P9000 option, or you are receiving a
  229.        "Hardware Initialization Problems ..." error message, be sure that 
  230.        you have properly initialized the P9000 prior to configuring 
  231.        TurboDLD. The P9000 initialization creates an initialization file 
  232.        which allows TurboDLD to identify and use the P9000 chip. If the
  233.        .INI file is not found, you will receive the error message.
  234.  
  235.        For Diamond Viper VLB users, if you are properly running the 
  236.        VIPER.BAT initialization and creating the VIPER.INI file but are 
  237.        still receiving the "Hardware Initialization Problems ..." error 
  238.        message, verify that the following line exists in the [hardware] 
  239.        section of the VIPER.INI file:
  240.  
  241.          Bus Type=VESA LOCAL BUS
  242.  
  243.        If the Bus Type line reads:
  244.         
  245.          Bus Type=VLB 
  246.  
  247.        change it to "VESA LOCAL BUS" and the error should go away.
  248.  
  249.     
  250.     ATI VGA Wonder
  251.     --------------
  252.     When using some ATI VGA Wonder boards in a dual screen system 
  253.     configured for single screen use, make sure that you start
  254.     AutoCAD from the VGA screen. Otherwise, flip screens will result
  255.     in a weird combination of monochrome and VGA screens. 
  256.  
  257.  
  258. 3D Studio
  259. ---------
  260.  
  261. In 3D Studio v3, selection of a display font larger than 8x14 at 
  262. 640x480 resolution will cause 3D Studio to display a blank screen
  263. which you cannot recover from. This is a limitation of 3D Studio.
  264. If a blank screen occurs, delete 3DADI.CFG and then reconfigure
  265. TurboDLD for an 8x14 or smaller font.
  266.  
  267.  
  268. If using a TIGA graphics board with 3D Studio, we highly recommend
  269. that you configure your display and rendering resolutions to be the
  270. same. Some TIGA boards don't cope well with mode switches in the 
  271. 3DS environment.
  272.  
  273.  
  274. When configuring 3D Studio for use with TurboDLD and XGA or P9000
  275. based graphics boards, answer "N" to the "Are you using a VGA
  276. graphics board?" configuration question or unpredictable results
  277. will occur. 
  278.  
  279.  
  280. The PANA3DS.BAT file copied to your TurboDLD sub-directory during 
  281. installation is used for 3D Studio configuration. This file should 
  282. be run prior to starting 3D Studio.
  283.  
  284.  
  285.  
  286. DLDCFG and AutoCAD Release 12 and 13
  287. ------------------------------------
  288.  
  289. The DLDCFG environment variable is used by TurboDLD to locate its
  290. configuration files. DLDCFG must be set for AutoCAD Release 10/386,
  291. Release 11, AutoShade, and 3D Studio.
  292.  
  293. When using Release 12, however, DLDCFG is not required. TurboDLD
  294. will look for its configuration files in the same directory as the
  295. RCTURBOD.EXP file. However, if DLDCFG is set, TurboDLD will use
  296. DLDCFG to locate its configuration files. This could be useful in
  297. a networked environment to allow individual users of a network-based
  298. version of TurboDLD to maintain their own local TurboDLD configuration.

  301.  
  302. Upgrading from DLD386 or MACH-12
  303. --------------------------------
  304.  
  305. If you are using Release 12 or 13, you do not need to run DLD386's
  306. FASTACAD.BAT first. FASTACAD.BAT sets four environment variables
  307. including DLDCFG, DSPADI, RDPADI, and RCPADI. None of these
  308. environment variables are needed with Release 12 or 13 and TurboDLD. If
  309. you set these variables in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or a batch file used
  310. to start Release 12 or 13, we strongly recommend that you remove them.

  312.  
  313. General Information 
  314. -------------------
  315. If you have low amounts of CPU RAM and less than 20mb of available
  316. hard disk space you should use the -SWAPCHK ON switch to configure
  317. AutoCAD. This switch will give you the option of saving your
  318. drawing when AutoCAD runs out of swap space.   The way you
  319. configure this is to change into your AutoCAD program sub-directory
  320. and at the prompt type:
  321.  
  322.         CFIG386 ACAD -SWAPCHK ON
  323.  
  324.  
  325.  
  326.     AutoCAD Revisions
  327.     -----------------
  328.     Please be aware that there is a C2 revision to AutoCAD Release 12.
  329.     This revision corrects various digitizer and plotter problems.
  330.  
  331.  
  332.     Rendering Resolution Options 
  333.     ----------------------------
  334.     The Rendering screen configuration menu will be available only when
  335.     configuring the Rendering screens of AVE Render, AutoShade 2 with 
  336.     RenderMan or 3D Studio.
  337.     
  338.     Also note that TurboDLD is a combined Display/Rendering driver
  339.     therefore, you should select that option from AVE Render's
  340.     configuration menu.
  341.  
  342.  
  343.     Graphics Board Selection
  344.     ------------------------
  345.     If your graphics board is not listed in the Graphics Board Selection
  346.     menu and you know which chip or platform your board is based on, you
  347.     may choose the Generic selection for that chip type. If you are not
  348.     sure which platform your graphics board is based on, please refer to
  349.     your user's manual or contact the board manufacturer for more
  350.     information.

  352.  
  353.     Dialog Commands
  354.     ---------------
  355.     If the AutoCAD Release 12 file and command dialog box usage is 
  356.     disabled (i.e. setting CMDIA = 0 and FILEDIA = 0 ) and a drawing
  357.     with an unresolved XREF is opened from the text screen, an error
  358.     or system hang will occur. This is a bug with AutoCAD and ADI 
  359.     drivers. To avoid this, use the Text Window on Single configuration
  360.     option.
  361.  
  362.  
  363.     Color Considerations
  364.     --------------------
  365.     In DLDCOLOR Object mode, when changing the background color, the 
  366.     new background color is swapped with the old in order to eliminate
  367.     the possibility of having a Drawing color the same as the background
  368.     color, causing a blank screen.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. Documentation Changes
  372. ---------------------
  373.  
  374. In "Chapter 4 - Changing Colors", p.4-2, the second paragraph should read: 
  375.  
  376.     "...change by moving the highlight box around with the arrow cursor 
  377.     control keys and pressing ENTER..." You may use the up and down arrows
  378.     as well as the left and right.
  379.  
  380.  
  381.  
  382. II. What if I Have Problems?
  383. ============================
  384.  
  385. The answers to the most often asked technical support questions can be 
  386. found in the Tips, Tricks & Troubleshooting chapter of your "TurboDLD 
  387. Installation Guide". Please check there first.
  388.  
  389. If you are having a problem which you cannot resolve, and you need to 
  390. contact Technical Support, please try to duplicate, and document the 
  391. steps required to reproduce the problem.  As you document the problem, 
  392. list your current system configuration, including video board, resolution, 
  393. number of colors configured, etc. Also, if possible, try to duplicate the 
  394. problem with an AutoCAD sample file so that it can be easily re-created 
  395. by a technician, if necessary. To contact Technical Support, refer to 
  396. Appendix A in your "TurboDLD Installation Guide".
  397.  
  398. Please note that Technical Support for Panacea's OEM software products 
  399. (defined as: Software bundled as a component part of a hardware product) 
  400. is the responsibility of the hardware manufacturer, not Panacea. If you 
  401. encounter a problem with TurboDLD, and connot find a satisfactory answer 
  402. from the reference manual or from the hardware manufacturer, Panacea will

  472. based on licensed software provided by Knowledge Dynamics Corp, PO Box 1558, 
  473. Canyon Lake, Texas 78130-1558 (USA). "INSTALL" is Copyright (c) 1987-1992 
  474. by Knowledge Dynamics Corp which reserves all copyright protection 
  475. worldwide. "INSTALL" is provided to you for the exclusive purpose of 
  476. installing TurboDLD. Panacea Inc. has modified the software as 
  477. provided by Knowledge Dynamics Corp, and thus the performance and behavior 
  478. of the "INSTALL" program shipped with TurboDLD may not represent the 
  479. performance and behavior of install as shipped by Knowledge Dynamics Corp.
