  22. Kaspersky Labs releases 4 kinds of antivirus database updates: daily, urgent, weekly and cumulative.

  24. Each cumulative update overwrites all previous cumulative, weekly and daily updates (some exceptions are described below), and each weekly update overwrites all previous daily updates.

  26. Cumulative updates ensure the optimization of virus definitions as well as methods of search and cure, therefore the amount of virus definitions in the "previous cumulative update + all weekly upgrades" may be bigger than the latest cumulative update.

  29. Daily updates are issued 8 times a day - round-the-clock.

  31. Daily updates are issued in the file DAILY.ZIP and are available only via the Internet from Kaspersky Anti-Virus support sites.

  33. Urgent updates
  34. Urgent updates are released in response to new potentailly dangerous threats at any time of the day or night.

  36. These are fundamentally characterized as a type of daily update (DAILY.ZIP).

  38. Weekly updates
  39. Weekly updates occur at the end of each work week.

Usually, such updates (the archive name is UPYYMMDD.ZIP, where YYMMDD represents the year, month and day) include database (UPYYMMDD.AVC) virus descriptions (not just viruses, but also for example, descriptions for file compression programs as well). Virus and related descriptions are found in UP*.TXT files, while and corrected or supplemented files are contained in AVP.SET files.

  43. Sometimes archives with weekly additions include corrected or supplemented modules, which are provided with the main set, e. g. EXTRACT.AVC or UNPACK.AVC (such as with changes made to the database of file compression programs).

  45. Cumulative updates
  46. Cumulative updates are released from one - three times a month depending on the virus situation worldwide.

  48. Antivirus databases are updated fully when the cumulative update is issued (the archive name is AVPYYMM.ZIP, where YYMM - are corresponding digits for the year and month).

  50. When updating manually it is necessary to completely re-write the database set, erasing all old modules and not just the file AVPYYMM.AVC. This is necessary because the upgrade contents usually change and database creation dates always change. However, main module names are never altered.

  52. You may receive the message "Object code not linked", this is the direction to check the correspondence of the main database creation dates and all additionally switched databases (primarily KERNEL.AVC).

  54. In any case the database in use should have a date no earlier than the date for the AVPYYMM.AVC file as is indicated in the latest (most recent) AVP.SET file.
