Installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 over Norton Personal Firewall 2002,
Norton Internet Security 2002, Norton Internet Security Professional Edition 2002
-------------------------------------------------
You may encounter problems after installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 over Norton
Internet Security 2002, Norton Internet Security Professional Edition 2002, or
Norton Personal Firewall 2002 if you donÆt have an application rule for
IAMAPP.EXE. Installing without this rule may cause the machine to freeze after
reboot.
To create an application rule for IAMAPP.EXE :
1. Open the Norton Internet Security (or Norton Personal Firewall) main UI by
double clicking the tray icon.
2. Select the Personal Firewall category on the left.
3. Select the Internet Access Control sub category.
4. From the Configure drop down select Application Scan.
5. Complete the Application Scan. Please make sure you select all applications
when presented with the application list.
Load Auto-Protect during system boot failure
-------------------------------------------------
If the option for Load Auto-Protect during system boot is grayed out
(XP only), you will need to:
1. Download XP Service Pack 1
A. Open up Internet Explorer
B. Click on Tools
C. Select Windows Update
D. Click Update Now and upgrade to Service Pack 1
2. Get the correct Q811493 hotfix. Please see:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819634.
Ensure this Option is enabled after reboot:
1. Open Norton AntiVirus.
2. Click on Options.
3. Click on Auto - Protect
4. Click on Advanced
Load Auto-Protect during system boot should be enabled.
Zone Alarm incompatibility issue
-------------------------------------------------
You may encounter problems using Norton AntiVirus with Zone
Alarm version 2.0 installed on your system. We recommend updating your
version of Zone Alarm or uninstalling it when using Norton AntiVirus.
MSN Windows Messenger 4.6 - 4.9
-------------------------------------------------
There is a known issue when user tries to exit MSN Messenger via taskbar.
A message alert will prompt:
"There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows
Messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit Windows
Messenger. These applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer,
and Internet Explorer"
You may resolve this permanently by disabling Windows Messenger protection by:
1. Double click the Norton AntiVirus 2004 icon on the desktop
2. Click on Options
3. Click on Instant Messenger on the left side
4. Remove the check mark for "Windows Messenger (recommended)"
5. Click OK
However, instead of exiting Window Messenger, we suggest you sign off of Windows
Messenger by:
1. Right click on MSN tray icon
2. Click Sign Out
Or
1. Launch MSN Messenger
2. Click on File
3. Click "Sign Out"
How to save an MSI log file to troubleshoot install and uninstall issues
-------------------------------------------------
If Norton AntiVirus fails to install, we recommend saving
the Norton AntiVirus 2004 (Date/Time).LOG file that is generated
by default during your installation of Norton AntiVirus. This will
help the Symantec Support Team to resolve your issue faster. After
uninstalling Norton AntiVirus, there should be two Norton AntiVirus 2004.log
files. Install log should show earlier date, time and smaller KB size. Uninstall
log should show later date, time and bigger KB size.
To locate this log file:
1. Click on "Start > Run."
2. Type the following command "%temp%".
3. This should automatically launch the Windows
temporary directory.
4. Find a file called "Norton AntiVirus 2004(Date/Time).log."
Sending outgoing email can be slower within Outlook
Express or Outlook under Windows 2000
---------------------------------------------------
There is a known Microsoft issue with Windows 2000,
Outlook Express and Outlook, (SMTP) email will send
slower with Norton AntiVirus email protection enabled.
Microsoft has resolved this issue and a hot fix that
can be downloaded from the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q294/7/69.ASP
Supported Ports for Norton AntiVirus's email protection
---------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus only supports email scanning on the default
ports of 110 (POP3) & 25 (SMTP). Currently, we do not provide
Email protection for any other ports.
Creating new user profiles after installing
Norton AntiVirus on Windows 98/98SE
--------------------------------------------------
Creating a new user account(s) after installing Norton
AntiVirus may generate errors when accessing the
following features "Scan for Virus" and "Options."
To correct this issue
1. Locate the Windows directory installed on your
machine. (If you have not customized any settings,
this should be located at C:\Windows during a
default installation of your operating system.)
2. Browse to the following folder in your windows
directory:
C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
3. Copy the entire "Symantec" folder from
"C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\"
to "C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\"
Norton AntiVirus Toolbar integration with
Windows Explorer
--------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus automatically adds a toolbar button
to the first Microsoft browser launched after
installation. Other Microsoft browsers can be
manually added by right-clicking the Explorer toolbar
and selecting Norton AntiVirus.
Please note: There is a known Microsoft bug the
Norton AntiVirus can show up as a duplicate menu item.
This is documented in the following Microsoft
knowledge base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q231/6/21.ASP
Network Associates PGP compatibility issue
------------------------------------------
Network Associates PGP encrypts the boot records,
preventing Norton AntiVirus from scanning them for
viruses.
Digitally signing emails in Outlook Express 6.x and
Office XP
---------------------------------------------------
Outlook Express 6.x offers the ability to digitally sign
emails to ensure that they are not modified during
transfer. Norton AntiVirus email protection will modify
the emails during virus repair. This will create an
Outlook alert stating the message has been modified.
Inoculation and AP alerts for boot sectors on Windows 98/ME
-------------------------------------------------------
Auto-Protect and Inoculation ignore disk label
(volume label) changes to prevent false virus alerts.
Viruses cannot use the disk label to infect your system.
For the same reason, changes to the OEM ID in a boot
record are not reported.
By design, Auto-Protect does not report writes to a boot
sector or master boot record if the new sector is
identical to the one previously on the drive. For
example, you may use a disk editor to write back the
same data to a boot sector or master boot record.
Dynamic Volumes on Windows 2000 and XP
--------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus does not fully support Dynamic Volumes.
Scanning these drives may result in the error message
"Unable to read boot record on drive." This is because
these drives are not bootable. However, Norton AntiVirus
will scan the drive for infected files.
Email client configuration and outbound email scanning
------------------------------------------------
Some email clients (Outlook and Outlook Express for example)
can be configured to disconnect your dial-up Internet connection
or PPPoE connection (if you are required to sign onto your Broadband
provider) after sending email. If outbound email scanning is enabled
within Norton AntiVirus this disconnect can occur while the email
is still being scanned, preventing it from actually being sent.
If this occurs, it is recommended that you disable the automatic
disconnection feature within your email client.
Updating Windows 98/ME video drivers for
Auto-Protect
------------------------------------------------
Some video drivers for Windows 98/Millennium may
cause display corruption or an apparent system lock up
when an Auto-Protect alert is generated. To correct the
problem, upgrade to the latest version of the video
driver.
Using Norton AntiVirus with directory symbolic
links/NTFS junctions
----------------------------------------------
Using directory symbolic links, also known as NTFS
junctions, on Windows 2000 or Windows XP
machines may increase hard drive scanning times due
to repeated scanning.
ADVANCED PROTECTION
----------------------------------------------
If you install Norton Utilities over a version of Norton AntiVirus
Professional, restart your computer to be sure the Norton Protected
Recycle Bin is performing correctly.
