  43. * 1.  OVERVIEW
  44. ************************************************************
  45. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
  46. to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to 
  47. the operating system how the Intel(R) chipset components will 
  48. be configured.  This is needed for the proper functioning of
  49. the following features:
  50.  
  51.    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
  52.    - AGP Support
  53.    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
  54.    - USB Support
  55.    - Identification of Intel(R) chipset components in 
  56.      the Device Manager
  57.  
  58. This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive,
  59. Silent and Unattended Preload.  The Interactive Mode 
  60. requires user input during installation; the Silent Mode and
  61. Unattended Preload do not.  
  62.  
  63. Additionally, this software offers a set of command line
  64. flag options that enables extended installation functionality. 
  65. The command line flags are not case sensitive.  See Section 4 
  66. for detailed descriptions of these flags.
  67.  
  68. Important Note:
  69. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is 
  70. distributed in two formats -- self extracting .EXE files
  71. (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP). 
  72. Depending on which distribution format is being executed, 
  73. the command-line syntax may differ. See Section 4 for more details.

  77. * 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 
  78. ************************************************************
  79. 1.  The software included with this distribution package is 
  80.     designed to operate with the following chipset 
  81.     configurations:
  82.     
  83. Note: Please refer to the release notes for the list of supported chipsets.
  84.       
  85.               
  86. 2.  One of the following operating systems must be 
  87.     fully installed and running on the system
  88.     before installing this software:
  89.

  91.     Windows* 98SE    4.10.2222  (Original Release)
  92.     Windows* Me      4.90.3000  (Original Release)
  93.     Windows* 2000    5.00.2195  (Original Release)

  97.     To verify which operating system has been installed onto 
  98.     the target system, follow the steps below:
  99.  
  100.     a.  Click on Start.
  101.     b.  Select Settings.
  102.     c.  Select Control Panel.
  103.     d.  Double-click on the System icon.
  104.     e.  Click on the General system properties tab.
  105.     f.  Verify, which OS has been installed by reading
  106.         the System information.
  107.                               
  108. 3.  It is recommended that the software be installed on 
  109.     systems with at least 32MB of system memory when using 
  110.     Windows* 98SE and Windows* Me. Windows* 2000 and Windows* XP
  111.     require at least 64MB of system memory.
  112.  
  113.  
  114. 4.  It is recommended that there be a minimum of 5MB of hard
  115.     disk space on the system in order to install this software.
  116.  
  117. 5.  Check the System Requirements.  The operating system 
  118.     must be fully installed and running on the system before
  119.     running this software.
  120.  
  121. 6.  Close any running applications.  Otherwise, you may
  122.     experience difficulties.
  123.  
  124. 7.  It is recommended that the Intel(R) Chipset Software 
  125.     Installation Utility be installed onto the target system 
  126.     prior to the installation of other drivers.
  127.  
  128.  
  129. Please check with your system provider to determine which 
  130. operating system and Intel(R) chipset are used in your system.

  134. * 3.  CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE
  135. ************************************************************
  136. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility package 
  137. contains the following items:
  138.

  148.               not copied to the <Windows>\INF directory.

  153. * 4.  LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS
  154. ************************************************************
  155. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports  
  156. several command line flags for various installation options. 
  157. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a 
  158. space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag.
  159.  
  160. Due to the different distribution formats available for the
  161. Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command
  162. line flag syntax may vary:
  163.  
  164. 1. Self-Extracting .EXE Distribution:
  165.       When installing this software using the .EXE 
  166.       distribution, an extra '-A' must be appended to the 
  167.       INFINST_xxx.EXE program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) 
  168.       in order to successfully pass command line parameters.
  169.  
  170.    Note: The extra '-A' flag for the self-extracting .EXE 
  171.          package is DIFFERENT from the '-A' command line flag 
  172.          option described below, under Compressed .ZIP
  173.          Distribution.        
  174.  
  175.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  176.                described below, the installation program 
  177.                should be invoked as follows:  
  178.           
  179.                INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P)
  180.  
  181. 2. Compressed .ZIP Distribution:
  182.       When installing this software using the .ZIP 
  183.       distribution, there is no need to append any extra 
  184.       flags to the SETUP.EXE program call in order to pass 
  185.       command line flags.
  186.  
  187.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  188.                described below, the installation program 
  189.                should be invoked as follows:  
  190.                         
  191.                SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P)
  192.  
  193. Below is a list of all the available command line flags that
  194. may be used with the program call.  Note that the '-L' and 
  195. the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command 
  196. line flag list.
  197.  
  198. Flag            Description
  199. ----            -----------
  200. -?              Help flag.  Displays the list of available 
  201.                 command line flags.  This parameter works in 
  202.                 the Interactive Mode only.  
  203.  
  204. -A              Extracts the INF files and README.TXT to 
  205.                 either "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or 
  206.                 the <Installation Path> directory specified 
  207.                 using the '-P' flag. The software will 
  208.                 NOT install these INF files to the system.  
  209.                 This flag can be combined only with the '-P' 
  210.                 flag option. All other options will be 
  211.                 ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. 
  212.                 This parameter works in either Silent Mode 
  213.                 or Interactive Mode.
  214.  
  215. -B              Automatically reboots the system after 
  216.                 installation. This flag is ignored if '-A' 
  217.                 flag is specified. This parameter works in 
  218.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  219.  
  220. -H<mode>
  221.                 This flag enables DMA Mode for an IDE device.
  222.  
  223. -L<LangCode>
  224.                 Forces the InstallShield* user interface to 
  225.                 display the specified language during setup.  
  226.                 Note that there should be NO spaces between 
  227.                 '-L' and the 4-digit language code (see 
  228.                 below). This flag and the '-S' flag must be 
  229.                 placed at the end of the command line flag 
  230.                 list. This parameter works in Interactive 
  231.                 Mode only.
  232.  
  233. -NOLIC
  234.                 This flag disables the license agreement
  235.                 dialogue box during installation. This parameter 
  236.                 works in Interactive Mode only.
  237.  
  238. -NOREAD
  239.                 This flag disables the readme display during
  240.                 installation. This parameter works in Interactive
  241.                 Mode only.
  242.  
  243. -NOWEL
  244.                 This flag disables the welcome screen during
  245.                 installation. This parameter works in the
  246.                 Interactive Mode only.
  247.  
  248. -OVER ALL    
  249.                 This flag will update ALL INF drivers even if
  250.                 third party drivers are currently installed. This
  251.                 parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  252.  
  253. -OVER FWH
  254.                 This flag will update the Security drivers even
  255.                 if a third party Security driver is currently
  256.                 installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  257.                 Mode only.
  258.  
  259. -OVER IDE    
  260.                 This flag will update the Storage drivers even
  261.                 if a third party Storage driver is currently
  262.                 installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  263.                 Mode only.
  264.  
  265. -OVER SMB    
  266.                 This flag will update the LAN drivers even if
  267.                 thrid party LAN drivers are currently installed.
  268.                 This parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  269.  
  270. -P <Installation Path>   
  271.                 Specifies the HDD location to which the INF 
  272.                 program files are copied.  If this flag is 
  273.                 not specified at the command line, the 
  274.                 <Installation Path> directory is by default 
  275.                 assumed to be:
  276.                 
  277.                    C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst
  278.                 
  279.                 If this flag is used without the '-A' 
  280.                 option, only README.TXT will be copied to 
  281.                 <Installation Path>.  The directory name can 
  282.                 include spaces.  In this case, however, a 
  283.                 pair of double quotes (") must enclose the 
  284.                 directory name.  This parameter works in 
  285.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  286.  
  287. -S              Runs the Installer in Silent Mode.  No user 
  288.                 interface is displayed. This flag and the
  289.                 '-L' flag must be placed at the end of the 
  290.                 command line flag list.
  291.                 
  292. -SKIP<DevID>
  293.                 This flag will allow one or more devices to
  294.                 not be installed.
  295.

  328. * 5.  CONTENTS OF THE EXTRACTED FILES
  329. ************************************************************
  330. INF files are copied to the hard disk drive after running 
  331. the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility 
  332. executable with a '-A' flag (i.e., "INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A" 
  333. or "SETUP.EXE -A").  The location of the INF files depends
  334. on whether a '-P' flag is specified along with the '-A' 
  335. flag:
  336.  
  337. 1.  If a '-P' flag is NOT specified, then the INF files are 
  338.     copied to the following directory:  
  339.        "C:\Program Files\Intel\INFINST"
  340. 2.  If a '-P' flag IS specified, then the INF files are 
  341.     copied to the location listed immediately after the 
  342.     '-P' flag.  
  343.  
  344.     See Section 4 for more information on flag usage.
  345.  
  346. After INF file extraction, the INF files and components are 
  347. copied to the <INF Extract Directory>.  These files and 
  348. components are categorized according to the Intel(R) 
  349. Chipset types. The following table summarizes the locations
  350. of the INF files, by chipsets:
  351.  
  352.    NOTE: The INF files are designed to update ONLY devices
  353.          not supported by the corresponding operating 
  354.          systems.
  355.  
  356.    NOTE: "<INF Extract Directory>" is abbreviated "<IED>"
  357.          in the remainder of this section.
  358.  
  359. For each subdirectory of <IED> (e.g., ICH, ICH2, etc), 
  360. the INF files are further classified according to 
  361. the operating systems they are designed for:
  362.  
  363.    Win98SE\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  364.                      Windows* 98SE ONLY.
  365.    Win2000\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  366.                      Windows* 2000 ONLY.
  367.    WinME\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  368.                      Windows* Me ONLY.
  369.    WinXP\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  370.                      Windows* XP ONLY.
  371.  
  372. NOTES:                             
  373. 1.  INFPrelo.INF makes a CUSTOM.INF template that installs 
  374.     the INF files for Intel(R) chipsets during OS setup.  
  375.     OEMs can incorporate this file into the SETUP directory 
  376.     for the OEM Preload Kit.
  377.     (Refer to Section 8 for more details.)

  379.  
  380. ************************************************************
  381. * 6.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE
  382. ************************************************************
  383. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  384.     described in section 2.
  385.  
  386. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  387.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE
  388.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE
  389.  
  390. 3.  You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement.  
  391.     If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before 
  392.     extracting any files.
  393.     
  394. 4.  Follow the on-screen instructions and use the default
  395.     settings to complete the setup, once the operating
  396.     system has rebooted.
  397.  
  398. 5.  This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset 
  399.     Software Installation Utility.  
  400.  
  401.  
  402. ************************************************************
  403. * 7.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE
  404. ************************************************************
  405. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  406.     described in section 2.
  407.  
  408. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  409.     For silent install with auto-reboot:
  410.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  411.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s
  412.        Compressed .ZIP distribution:
  413.        SETUP.EXE -b -s
  414.     - OR -
  415.     For silent install without auto-reboot:
  416.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  417.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s
  418.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE -s
  419.  
  420. 3.  The utility will perform the necessary updates and 
  421.     record the installation status in the following system 
  422.     registry key:
  423.         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst
  424.  
  425. 4.  If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the 
  426.     system will automatically reboot if the update was
  427.     successful.
  428.  
  429.     NOTE:  The system MUST be rebooted for all device 
  430.     updates to take effect.
  431.  
  432. 5.  To determine whether the install was successful, verify 
  433.     the "install" value in the registry key specified in 
  434.     Step 3.
  435.  
  436. 6.  In Silent Mode the utility will not display the license
  437.     agreement. When using Silent Mode the license agreement,
  438.     license.txt, will be placed in the following folder:
  439.         Program Files/Intel/INFInst folder.
  440.     Please read this agreement.
  441.

  468. * 8.  INSTALLING THE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION
  469. ************************************************************
  470. 1.  Copy the OS installation files from the setup 
  471.     directory to a directory on the hard disk. This 
  472.     procedure requires a minimum of 5MB of hard disk space.
  473.     It is important to make sure there is enough disk space 
  474.     before beginning the copy process. This can be done by
  475.     opening 'My Computer' and then right clicking on the
  476.     correct drive and selecting 'Properties'. The
  477.     directories shall be referred to as follows:
  478.  
  479.       Windows* XP   :  <WINXP Setup Directory>
  480.       Windows* 2000 :  <WIN2000 Setup Directory>
  481.       Windows* 98SE :  <WIN98SE Setup Directory>
  482.       Windows* Me   :  <WINMe Setup Directory>

  486. * 8A.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* XP INF FILES PRIOR TO
  487. *      OS INSTALLATION

  489. NOTE: The Windows* XP OEM Preload Kit distribution CD
  490.       contains a setup directory with all the base OS setup
  491.       files and installation programs (WINNT.EXE and
  492.       WINNT32.EXE).  
  493.  
  494. The name of the directory may vary depending on the 
  495. distribution CD (e.g., \I386\).
  496.  
  497.  
  498. 1.  Create the following directory structure under the 
  499.     <WINXP Setup Directory>: 
  500.  
  501.        \$OEM$\$$\INF

  503. 2.  Copy the Windows* XP INF files from 
  504.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinXP to the directory
  505.     created in Step 1 above:

  517. 4.  Copy the Windows* XP INF files AND the catalog files 
  518.     (.CAT) from <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinXP to the 
  519.     directory created in Step 4 above:

  522.  
  523.     Note: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  524.           interest.  See Section 8 for more details.

  526. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* XP installation
  527.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WINXP Setup 
  528.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  529.     answer file must include the following information:
  530.    
  531.        [Unattended]
  532.        OemPreinstall = Yes
  533.        OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF"
  534.  
  535.     A sample answer file for preloading the Intel(R) Chipset
  536.     Software Installation utility files is available:

  548. 6.  Run "WINNT.EXE /u:<answer file name> /s:<WINXP Setup 
  549.     Directory>" to install Windows* XP.

  552. * 8B.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* 2000 INF FILES PRIOR TO
  553. *      OS INSTALLATION

  594.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  595.     answer file must include the following information:

  865.         the driver has been found and that it is "now 
  866.         ready to install the best driver for this

  900. Solution:   System lockup can occur during Restart as a 
  901.             result of several possible system issues.  In 
  902.             the event of system lockup, restart the machine 
  903.             and view Device Manager.  If devices are listed 
  904.             properly and the system experiences no further 
  905.             problems, then the .INF file restore process was 
  906.             successful.  If devices are not configured 
  907.             correctly, try re-running the procedures 
  908.             outlined in Section 3.

  910.             If this does not fix the issue or further 
  911.             issues are experienced, reinstall the 
  912.             operating system.

  915. Issue:      After running the setup program and rebooting 
  916.             the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find 
  917.             one of the following files:

  920. Solution:   Click Browse in the dialog box where this
