  1. This release contains the 2002.06.01 version of Anvil Studio by Willow Software.
  2.  
  3. mstudioZ.exe and astU.EXE are self-extracting setup files.
  4.                                     
  5. Anvil Studio is a "Freeware" program that runs under Windows 95, Windows 98,
  6. Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
  7. It supports multi-track recording, composing, and editing of music
  8. using AUDIO, MIDI, and sampled percussions.
  9. Audio effects include delay, pitch change, filtering, and reverse.
  10. Anvil Studio is designed to work with optional accessories from
  11. Willow Software such as sheet music printing, piano exercises,
  12. ear training exercises, and voice-pitch analysis.
  13.  
  14. Requires 32 meg RAM (64 meg for Audio recording), and a Sound card.
  15. To run under Windows NT 4.0, it requires Microsoft's NT Service Pack 3,
  16. available for download from Microsoft's WEB sites at:

  42. Bugs fixed in version 2002.08.03 include:
  43.  o  Piano roll and Rhythm editor have been displaying note durations 4 times
  44.     as long as they should be since version 2002.06.01.
  45.  
  46. New features in the 2002.06.01 version include:
  47.  o  View/Options/MIDI has an Idle Thread Priority slider to prevent
  48.     some mobile CPUs (like the AMD K7) from stepping down to a slower
  49.     rate when idle while playing MIDI songs.  This can eliminate cracking
  50.     and distortion problems with those chips.
  51.  o  When Setup is run under Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it complains if
  52.     the user does not have administrator privilages.
  53.  o  When Setup is run with administrator privilages under Windows 2000
  54.     or Windows XP, it adds Anvil Studio to all user's Start Menu.
  55.  o  Fixed problems:
  56.     o  Anvil Studio was not managing the audio Input Source selection
  57.        properly with some soundcards such as the Crystal WDM Audio.

  60.  o  Added options to the Select Synthesizer Instrument window that let you
  61.     set a default MIDI Synthesizer, MIDI Bank and MIDI Program,
  62.     so that when new tracks are created, they will default to that bank and program.
  63.  o  Improved information generated by Test MIDI Connections button.
  64.  o  Fixed problems with File / Export Mixed Audio that was sometimes causing
  65.     "Unknown Multimedia Error 80042401"

  68.  o  Added "Edit This Sample" as a right-mouse-button popup menu to the
  69.     Rhythm and Piano Roll editors.

  87.  o  The Remove Note popup menu item was not working.
  88.  o  Sometimes triplets were not being displayed properly.

  90. New features in the 2002.04.04 version include:
  91.  o  Help / Upgrade Anvil Studio and
  92.     View / Anvil Studio Upgrade menu items automatically download and run
  93.     upgrade setup programs, making it easier to upgrade to new versions
  94.     of Anvil Studio and its optional accessories.
  95.  o  Added a checkbox to the Options / MIDI screen named
  96.     "Close MIDI Out when not in use" which is helpful if you here very
  97.     short notes when entering them on the Compose screen.
  98.     When it is set, however, it ties that MIDI Out port up so that
  99.     other applications running at the same time cannot use it.
  100.  o  Fixed Problems:
  101.     o In Piano Roll and Rhythm editor, dragging a note that extended beyond
  102.       the end of the screen shortened the note.
  103.     o In Piano Roll and Rhythm editor, if note started to the left of the screen,
  104.       the remaining right part of the note was not visible either.
  105.     o Since version 2002.03.01, the Chord Name popup menu item was never enabled.
  106.     o When recording audio, it would some times erroneously say that there was not
  107.       enough memory, or that there was less memory available than there really was.

  109. New features in the 2002.04.03 version include:
  110.  o  Uses Windows Audio Format Converters to import/export WMA, MP3 or other audio formats.
  111.  o  Can import audio files with different formats (bits per sample, samples per second)
  112.     and mix them together.
  113.  o  Fixed a bug that was preventing different samples from overlapping.
  114.  
  115. New features in the 2002.04.02 version include:
  116.  o  Added an option to Edit / Set Record+Play Start+End Times menu item to have
  117.     the selected range of notes to Loop until the stop button is pressed.
  118.     This is useful if you want to practice playing along with a selection repeatedly.
  119.  o  Added pop-up menu items to Shift Lyrics Left/Right.
  120.  o  Added Snap-to-grid icon to Rhythm and Piano Roll editors.
  121.  o  Added button to View / Options to reset all options to factory-default settings.
  122.  o  Fixed a problem in version 2002.03.07 where it would report
  123.     Runtime Error 380 after a 4-string bass fretboard was selected.

  125. New features in the 2002.03.07 version include:
  126.  o  Made guitar fretboard tunable
  127.  o  Added Edit menu item "Repeat selected notes in a Loop" and improved the
  128.     documentation for Piano Roll and Rhythm Editor to make it easier to

  130.  o  Fixed some layout bugs with displaying notes on the staff and printing
  131.     sheet music.

  133. New features in the 2002.03.01 version include:
  134.  o  Added Create Metronome Click Track to Track menu
  135.  o  Added Guitar style to Compose window's Style list
  136.  o  Added option to keep MIDI Out ports open all the time, to eliminate clicking or short sounds
  137.     when used with some software wavetable synthesizers
  138.  o  Fixed Problems:
  139.     o  In some rare cases, chords appeared differently when printed than displayed on the screen.
  140.     o  Fixed SMPTE Master/Slave mode (industry terms - not ours...) so that you can have two machines 
  141.        running Anvil Studio, one as master, one as slave, and the master controls the slave's position
  142.        and tempo when playing and just positioning.  This works when Anvil Studio is connected to
  143.        another sequencer via MIDI cables as well.

  145. New features in the 2002.02.01 version include:
  146.  o  Fixed problems:
  147.     Since version 2001.10.01, it sometimes inserted undesired rests between
  148.     measures that included a time-signature change.
  149.  o  Works better on multi-user systems, using My Documents / My Music
  150.     as the default folder.
  151.  o  MIDI performance has been improved, most notably on slow systems.
  152.    
  153. New features in the 2001.12.07 version include:
  154.  o  Added a Grid option to the Staff editor.
  155.     If you want more precise control over the time where you drag notes,
  156.     change this Grid field to any value other than <b>-- no grid--</b>.
  157.     The staff will be divided by equally-spaced vertical grey lines.
  158.     This makes it easy to drag a note from the palette,
  159.     or an existing note from the staff, to the exact time position you want it.
  160.  o  When drawing beamed notes on the staff, the beam lines now slope.
  161.  o  The tempo field can now be set more precisely (e.g. 120.08 beats/minute)
  162.  o  Fixed Problems:
  163.      o Fixed a problem that caused Audio and MIDI tracks to sometimes play out of sync.

  165. Fixed problems in the 2001.12.03 version include:
  166.  o  Add Sounds button when adding a loop no longer forces all loops to be displayed.
  167.  o  Eliminated some runtime errors 80041039 errors when playing MIDI files.
  168.  o  Added a Font... button to the View / Lyrics so multi-lingual lyrics can be edited.

  170. Fixed problems in the 2001.11.10 version include:
  171.  o  Print-Sheet accessory was sometimes unnecessary drawing arcs
  172.     at the end of some staff lines.
  173.  o  US428 interface was not working unless MIDI Manager accessory was installed.
  174.     It now works in the free version of Anvil Studio.

  176. Fixed problems in the 2001.11.08 version include:
  177.  o  In version 2001.11.06, the following warning was given when exporting mixed audio:
  178.     "Your audio source does not appear to be currently set to Microphone or Line-In."

  180. New features in the 2001.11.07 version include:
  181.  o  Clicking the time field lets you set the exact song position,
  182.     with audio sample or SMPTE frame accuracy.
  183.  o  Added more right-click pop-up menu options to the Loop editor.
  184.  o  Per-track Pan slider controls are always visible on Mixer screen
  185.     if the screen is large enough.

  187. New features in the 2001.11.06 version include:
  188.  o  Added options that let Anvil Studio act in MIDI Master or MIDI Slave

  277.     o  In some situations, it would display a note over the top of a rest.
  278.     o  With time signatures other than 4/4, it would display whole-measure
  279.        rests incorrectly.

  281. Fixed problems in the 2001.07.06 version include:
  282.  o  Using a high-pass filter on audio tracks with 8-bit samples
  283.     (e.g. Phone-quality) could cause the program to crash.
  284.  o  With some soundcard drivers (LynxOne for example), it would
  285.     crash during program initialization.
  286.  o  It now displays Clef / Key Signature / Time Signature instead of
  287.     Clef / Time Signature / Key Signature.

  289. New features in the 2001.07.04 version include:
  290.  o  Anvil Studio now supports the Tascam US-428 External Mixing console.
  291.  o  When moving the mouse over notes on the staff, the equivalent keys
  292.     on the piano keyboard are highlighted.
  293.  o  Added menu item that splits a stereo audio track into two mono tracks.
  294.  o  Mixer screen now lets you change audio tracks between Mono and Stereo
  295.     without erasing the track.
  296.  o  Versions with Print-Sheet accessory can now print Rhythm tracks as
  297.     standard sheet music.
  298.  o  Added keyboard shortcuts that change the default note duration.
  299.  o  Fixed a problem that caused a Runtime Error 50003 on some systems.

  302.  o  Added guitar fret window as alternative to entering notes by piano keyboard.

  304.     simply by pressing the mouse button where the note is to start, and releasing

  308.  o  Added ability to import a small section of a large .WAV file:
  309.     see File / Import Audio / import part of file.
  310.  o  Fixed bugs:
  311.     o  It failed to load some .WAV files (especially some created by CyberRecorder),
  312.        giving a File Format error
  313.     o  When exporting a Stereo .WAV file with MONO tracks, using Auto Volume control,
  314.        it sometimes introduced distortion into the resulting .WAV file.

  316. New features in the 2001.05.03 version include:
  317.  o  Added controls to the bottom of the View / Mixer screen to make
  318.     it easier to configure soundcards for playback and recording.
  319.  o  Simplified the steps for mixing a song down to a single .WAV file.
  320.     (just select Export Mixed Audio from the File menu.)
  321.  o  Added several subjects to the Help / How Do I... and Common Problems... menu items.
  322.  o  Added a Default Note Volume control to the View / Options screen.
  323.  o  Fixed bugs:
  324.     o It sometimes failed to load DirectX effects properly.
  325.     o Selecting notes on the Compose screen and changing their volume
  326.       sometimes had an undesired effect on the way the notes were displayed.
  327.     o When editing a rhythm track or piano roll, if multiple edits were
  328.       made quicly within a repeat block, it could cause the block to get
  329.       repeated inaccurately.  This problem has been fixed, but if this happened
  330.       to one of your songs, just set the repeat count to 1, edit the block
  331.       to be the way you want, and reset the repeat count.
  332.    o  Sometimes, audio tracks with a timeshift > 92 where not mixed in.
  333.  
  334. New features in the 2001.04.02 version include:
  335.  o  Added "Test MIDI Connections" button to the View / Synthesizers screen
  336.     to help isolate problems with playing or recording with MIDI devices.
  337.     (For MIDI-Manager versions, this was added to View / Synthesizers / MIDI Scope).
  338.  o  Added Edit / Set Record+Play Start+End Times menu item, so you can select
  339.     a range of an audio track, select this menu item, and control which
  340.     range will get recorded (for a punch-in), and/or played.
  341.  
  342. New features in the 2001.04.01 version include:
  343.  o  Ability to assign Ctrl+<space bar> as shortcut, and ability to assign
  344.     any shortcut key to insert a space.
  345.  o  Note beaming rules were improved for 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 and 9/8 time signatures.
  346.  o  Fixed problems:
  347.     o  Editing some MIDI controller values (e.g. Legatto, Sustain) with the Pro-Mix
  348.        accessory's MIDI Effects pop-up menu could sometimes result in Overflow runtime errors.
  349.     o  Editing tempo with the Pro-Mix accessory could result in error message:
  350.        "Error:  One or more Instrument or Rhythm tracks in this song is not assigned to a synthesizer."
  351.        when attempting to play the song.

  353. New features in the 2001.03.08 version include:
  354.  o  Ability to assign Ctrl+<period> as shortcut, and ability to assign
  355.     any shortcut key to toggle whether or not the next inserted note is dotted.
  356.  o  New tracks are created with same time signature and key signature as previous track.
  357.  o  Fixed Problems:
  358.     o  Double-Bar or Repeat notation after two or more measures of rests
  359.        was getting drawn too early in the score.
  360.     o  When switching time signatures, it sometimes became impossible
  361.        to tie a note from one measure to the next.
  362.  
  363. New features in the 2001.03.07 version include:
  364.  o  Added Note Popup shortcut to compliment the existing Note Properties shortcut.
  365.  o  Shift-right-click now deletes a note on a Rhythm track or Piano roll.
  366.  o  When Pro-Mix is installed, a MIDI Effects pop-up menu is available
  367.     when you right-click a note, allowing finer-resolution control.
  368.  o  Fixed problems:
  369.     o  It was sometimes not choosing the best default MIDI Out port
  370.     o  Pro-Mix sometimes limited tempo range to 127 beats-per-minute instead of 300.
  371.     o  Fixed case where Pro-Mix could cause invalid subscript runtime error.
  372.     o  Was not displaying enharmonics properly for some minor keys
  373.     o  Since version 2001.03.01, Anvil Studio's mixer generated high-pitch
  374.        noise when playing audio tracks to stereo output if Enable MMX Signal Processing
  375.        was enabled on the Options / Audio page.

  377. Fixed problems in the 2001.03.06 version include:
  378.  o  In version 2001.03.05, if you try to make the last measure of
  379.     a track repeat, it crashed with a runtime null pointer error.
  380.  
  381. New features in the 2001.03.05 version include:
  382.  o  DirectX Effects properties can be altered while the song is playing.
  383.  o  On Composer screen for Piano Roll and Rhythm tracks, notes can be
  384.     dragged and resized with the mouse.
  385.  o  Fixed problems:
  386.     Since version 2001.02.07, multi-track audio recording with Multi-Audio 4/8
  387.     would crash with some hardware configurations.
  388.  
  389. New features in the 2001.03.02 version include:
  390.  o  You can now double-click on files of type .MID in the Windows Explorer
  391.     and have them loaded by Anvil Studio.
  392.     You can right-click on files of type .MID and select the Play pop-up menu item
  393.     and have them played by Anvil Studio.
  394.  o  Fixed problems:
  395.     o On Windows 2000, when playing audio tracks without DirectX, pressing
  396.       the Stop button could cause the system to hang in versions since 2001.02.01.
  397.     o In versions since 2001.02.01, playing Audio tracks was sometimes not releasing
  398.       memory, which could cause your system to become slower and slower and unresponsive.
  399.  
  400. Fixed problems in the 2001.02.05 version include:
  401.  o  Full-Screen rhythm tracks sometimes caused a Subscript-out-of-bounds runtime error
  402.     on screens with 1600 x 1024 pixels.
  403.  o  If Anvil Studio's setup program was run from a folder that had another file named setup.exe,
  404.     a setup program for the other program would get run instead.
  405.  o  Fixed problems:
  406.     Version 2001.02.xx failed with an Illegal Instruction on 486 processors.
  407.  
  408. New features in the 2001.02.04 version include:
  409.  o  Audio mixing is faster.
  410.  o  Improved Audio Reverb effect.
  411.  o  Right-click on sample names to edit their properties.
  412.  o  Rhythm page can be edited while the song is playing, making it easier to experiment with rhythms.  
  413.  o  Fixed problems:
  414.     o  File / Export Mixed Audio sometimes generated noise at the start or end of the created file.
  415.     o  The Print-Sheet accessory has an improved Conductor's score.
  416.     o  When printing on some printers, staff "decorations" were not being printed.
  417.  
  418. New features in the 2000.12.06 version include:
  419.  o  Added Normalize as filter-kind to maximize an audio-track's "head-room".
  420.  o  Fixed problems:
  421.     o  PC-Keyboard didn't map to notes for full-screen Piano Roll or Rhythm editor.
  422.     o  Fixed some filter-related bugs.

  424. Fixed problems in the 2000.12.04 version include:
  425.  o  Changing the pitch of an audio track could result in Overflow errors.
  426.  o  Band-Pass filtering problems were fixed.
  427.  o  Maximum Audio track time-shift was increased to 30 minutes (1800000 msec).
  428.  o  Edit / Insert at the end of an audio track was causing extra blank sound to
  429.     be added to the end of the audio track.
  430.  o  When loading a sample-set on the Rhythm screen, the samples can now
  431.     be used immediately.
  432.  
  433. New features in the 2000.12.02 version include:
  434.  o  Added Full-Screen checkbox to Piano-Roll and Rhythm composers
  435.     so the editing grid fills the entire screen.
  436.  o  Improved the speed and quality of the Audio-track's Filter function.
  437.  o  Added Audio Filter that Zero-averages a wave, adjusting each
  438.     sample up or down so that the entire wave's average is zero.
  439.  o  Increased the number of Audio Samples to:
  440.     15 when Multi-Audio 1/8 is installed, and
  441.     30 when Multi-Audio 4/8 is installed.
  442.  o  When a song is done playing, it now leaves the cursor at the
  443.     end of the song, to make it easier to edit the end a song being composed.
  444.  o  Fixed problems:
  445.     o  Songs with an UpBeat at the start were sometimes displaying
  446.        noteds inacurately after the first screen.
  447.  
  448. Fixed problems in the 2000.11.04 version include:
  449.  o  A bug was introduced into version 2000.11.01 that prevented
