  18. All future Popcorn development has been permanently discontinued.
  19. Release 1.20 is the last official build that will be made available for
  20. the general public, it is based on the latest stable 1.20 beta that was
  21. under development. The program will still be available for download in
  22. the foreseeable future. All support questions, feature requests and bug
  23. reports will be ignored, as will all requests regarding releasing the
  24. source code.

  27. What is Popcorn?
  28. ----------------
  29. Popcorn is a freeware ultra-lightweight POP3/SMTP e-mail client, free from
  30. unwanted and useless bloatware features. Being a true client/server
  31. application, it does not work in the same way as a typical mail program.
  32. This means that you're reading mail from a POP3 server directly, without
  33. downloading it to a local mailbox on your PC (although you can save mail
  34. messages locally if you want to). This makes it ideally suited for
  35. "on the road" mail access, and for scanning, reading and sending mail over
  36. slow internet connections.
  37.  
  38. Popcorn supports multiple user profiles, enabling you to read and send
  39. mail from any number of different POP3 accounts. It is a small, portable
  40. e-mail client, the kind you can carry with you on a floppy disk or download
  41. quickly from the web without having to go through any installation procedures.
  42. The user profiles and account information is NOT saved in the local registry,
  43. but in a small, portable .INI-file that accompanies the application,
  44. enabling you to easily move between locations.
  45.  
  46. Using Popcorn you can check and send mail from anywhere as long as you
  47. have an Internet connection. You can also delete spam, old messages or see
  48. if a message has attachments without downloading the messages from the
  49. server first. It is perfect for cleaning up and administering multiple POP3
  50. accounts.

  53. What's new in this release (1.20 - 03-Apr-2002)?
  54. ------------------------------------------------
  55. New features:
  56.  
  57. * EXPERIMENTAL: Added a much requested feature. Using either the "Mail" ->
  58.   "Mailbox Info for All Profiles..." menu item, the F2 key, or the
  59.   "Get Mailbox Info for All Profiles" icon on the toolbar, you can now
  60.   check the message status for all mail accounts at once. This new window
  61.   should have had a lot more functionality, but I never got around to it,
  62.   sorry all.

  66. * Removed the "Help" -> "Contents" menu item since it never did anything anyway.

  68. * Fixed a bug that prevented double clicking on hyperlinks URLs in the

  78.   the color black regardless of the Windows control panel setting.

  102. Getting started:
  103. ----------------
  104. When you have installed or extracted popcorn.zip to a folder, it is ready for
  105. use. Popcorn starts by asking you if you want to create a user profile if you
  106. have not done so before. By answering yes, the User Profiles dialog will open,
  107. and you'll have to click on the "New..." button to create and name a new profile.
  108. Enter all the information needed to receive and send mail. It's important that
  109. you fill out all the required fields correctly to be able to use all Popcorn
  110. features.
  111.  
  112. The following fields are required in the "Identity and Servers" tab:
  113.  
  114.   * Full Name
  115.   * E-mail Address
  116.   * SMTP Server (if you want to send mail)
  117.   * POP3 Server (if you want to receive mail)
  118.   * POP3 User (to be able to log onto the POP server)
  119.   * Password (to be able to log onto the POP server)
  120.     Checking the "Remember password" option (default) will make Popcorn
  121.     store the password, if you want Popcorn to prompt you for the password,
  122.     un-check this checkbox.
  123.  
  124. The password field will always contain stars (******) even if no password
  125. has been entered. Default settings are used in the "Settings" tab when you
  126. create a new profile, change them as you see fit.
  127.  
  128. When you have entered the information needed to be able to send and receive
  129. mail, click OK and Popcorn is ready for use. All user profile information and
  130. program configuration is stored in an .INI file (popcorn.ini) residing in
  131. the directory Popcorn was started from. If you wish to use Popcorn on other
  132. computers or locations without re-entering user profile information, this file
  133. contains all that is needed.

  136. Using Popcorn:
  137. --------------
  138. Popcorn is a true server/client application. This means that all mail resides on
  139. the POP3 server(s) that the user profiles specify. There is no local diskbased
  140. inbox or outbox. When you retrieve mail, it resides only in memory on
  141. the client computer. You can save mail to your harddisk as a text file,
  142. but you must do so implicitly by choosing "Save Current Message..."
  143.  
  144. When you delete items from your local "Inbox", they will be removed
  145. permanently from the account on the POP server (this is only possible if
  146. the check box on the left hand side of the mail item is checked or the item
  147. is highlighted in the inbox). You will be thoroughly warned before any mails
  148. are deleted from the POP server. Emptying the local inbox, switching user profile
  149. or exiting Popcorn will NOT delete any mail from the server, and upon exit,
  150. no mail is left on the host computers local hard disk.
  151.  
  152. When composing new mails, replying to or forwarding mail using the built-in
  153. editor, you can save outgoing messages manually or automatically. To save
  154. them manually, select "Save Mail Draft..." from the menu. For automatic saving of
  155. sent messages, you can either check the "Save outgoing" checkbox, or enable it
  156. permanently through the Settings tab in the User Profile manager. Messages
  157. saved in this way can be loaded into the mail editor through the "Open Mail Draft..."
  158. item on the menu. The draft messages contain the recipient(s) and subject lines
  159. in addition to the message content, so these fields will be automatically
  160. restored in the editor when a mail draft is loaded. All maildrafts and outgoing
  161. mails are saved as normal text files and they are fully readable and searchable
  162. by programs like Notepad.

  165. Uninstalling Popcorn:
  166. ---------------------
  167. To uninstall Popcorn, delete the installation directory and all shortcuts.
  168. No data or files are stored in the registry or other directories.
  169.

  176. * Popcorn can now save (and append) all outgoing mail to a single flat text file. The
  177.   path and file name can be different for each profile. To enable this option, open the
  178.   user profile manager, go to the Settings tab and check the "Append outgoing messages
  179.   to a single text file" checkbox. Either select an existing path&file, or select the
  180.   path and type the name of the file you want to create and append outgoing messages to.
  181. * Popcorn now supports the "logon and authenticate on POP server before sending a message"
  182.   SMTP authentication scheme. This can be enabled in the User Profile Manager on the
  183.   "Identity and Servers" tab with the checkbox "Use POP authentication before message send"
  184. * The User Profile Manager layout has now been and cleaned up.
  185.   The "New...", "Clone...", "Delete..." and "Rename..." buttons are now available
  186.   at all times (they are no longer on the "Identity and Servers" tab only).
  187.   Grouping of controls on the same tab has also been reorganized and more logically
  188.   placed
  189. * Added "From:" field to the mail editor. This can be shown or hidden from the "+" button
  190.   beside the "To:" field. If shown, it will list all profile addresses in the combo dropdown
  191.   and show the current profiles Full Name and e-mail address, making it easy to send from any
  192.   address defined in any user profile, or you can type in any address you want.
  193. * Popcorn now reads and stores the Reply-To: field if it exists in all received messages.
  194.   The Reply-To address will also be used correctly when replying or replying to all
  195.   to a received message.
  196. * Popcorn now accepts a command line argument that it uses to locate
  197.   (if you supply a full path) the Popcorn INI file. If you supply only a filename,
  198.   Popcorn will try to locate an INI file with the name given in the programs
  199.   startup folder.
  200. * Popcorn now has a "Mark for Deletion" sub-menu with items "Mark all Unread" og
  201.   "Mark all Read" in addition to the existing ones.

  203. Bug-fixes:
  204. * Fixed a bug that made Popcorn display the wrong number of headers downloaded
  205.   after messages has been deleted from the POP server.
  206. * Fixed a bug where sometimes Popcorn would not empty the mail viewer window
  207.   of a message that is beeing deleted. This could Popcorn to crash if you
  208.   chose to save/print/reply etc... to the displayed message.
  209. * The UsePOPServerStatus default setting has been changed from TRUE (on),
  210.   to FALSE (off)
  211. * The Popcorn readme file has now been renamed to PopReadme.txt, making it
  212.   easier to separate from other readme files.
  213. * Fixed bug that caused Popcorn to sometimes display the "You have new mail"
  214.   message when retrieving the latest headers for a another profile 
  215. * Reply To All now properly retains Cc recipients in the mail editor
  216. * Fixed bug that caused the Delete marked items on Pop server toolbar button
  217.   not beeing greyed out when not available
  218. * Popcorn now properly receives mail headers dynamically as specified in the POP RFCs,
  219.   it used to have a fixed maximum size of 15k. per header. Headers with many
  220.   100+ recipients ("To:") could also crash Popcorn, this has now been fixed.
  221. * Finally using the checkboxes in the inbox does not trigger changes in item activation,
  222.   but you have to use Ctrl + mouseclick to be able to check & highlight items
  223.   at the same time without clearing the current selection
  224. * Fixed bug that did not allow POP and SMTP port numbers to be over 8148. They
  225.   can now be between 0 and 65535 as specified in the TCP/IP specs.

  316.     * A lot of usability "problems" have been improved (error dialogs etc...)
  317.     * FIX: Popcorn unselected the current message in the inbox listview if
  318.       it was checked off (meaning the wrong context menu shows up and other
  319.       strange stuff!)
  320.     * Partially downloaded content is now correctly decoded to 8 bit charset
  321.     * Fixed bug with displaying the wrong current sort column on menus
  322.     * Improved handling of mail sending/drafts and errors in the mail editor
  323.     * Popcorn finally notifies you of new mail AFTER they have been downloaded! ;-)
  324.     * Popcorn transmitted a single NULL character after the EOD sequence
  325.       when transmitting SMTP data. This prohibited some SMTP servers from
  326.       accepting mail data sent from Popcorn
  327.     * Popcorn could cut off ends of mails received from Exchange POP servers 
  328.       because Exchange reports wrong octet sizes when sending the LIST command.
  329.       This bug affected mail download from all servers that do not strictly
  330.       comply with RFC specifications
  331.     * Popcorn did not always properly set the "Local (partial)" status for
  332.       a downloaded message. This has now been fixed, even for POP servers
  333.       that do not strictly follow RFC specifications. The "Local (partial)"
  334.       status is now only set when the user chooses to download the top n
  335.       lines of a message, and the complete message contains more lines than
  336.       Popcorn received
  337.     * Fixed bug with enabling/disabling (greying) edit boxes for getting top
  338.       lines of messages with attachments or over a certain size in the User
  339.       Profile Mananger, settings tab.

  347. New features:
  348.     * Popcorn can now save all downloaded mail items (with local or partial
  349.       status) to single flat text file. When two or more mail items have
  350.       been downloaded, select "File/Save All Local Mail..." or use the
  351.       corresponding button on the toolbar to save all downloaded messages
  352.       to the directory of your choice.
  353.     * Popcorn can now automatically send a copy of each sent mail item
  354.       to a specified e-mail address. Using this feature enables you to have a
  355.       roaming outbox using a second (or the same) POP account. To use
  356.       this feature, open the User Profile manager, check the
  357.       "Auto Send Copy To:" checkbox in the "Identity & Servers" tab,
  358.       and enter the desired destination address. You will be prompted
  359.       each time you send mail from the mail editor if you want to send
  360.       a copy to the specified address.
  361.     * Popcorn now allows for selection of multiple headers in the inbox for
  362.       deleting mail items on the POP server using the "standard" Microsoft
  363.       list view methods (Shift, Ctrl, lasso). This can be used in combination
  364.       with the checkboxes or separately. Using the ALT key when clicking on
  365.       a header in the inbox allows you to select it without downloading the
  366.       mail item.
  367.     * Popcorn now handles being started from read only media such as a write
  368.       protected floppy or a CD. It is preferable that there allready exists
  369.       a Popcorn.ini file together with the executable. All changes done to
  370.       any program setting or user profile will NOT be saved when you quit
  371.       Popcorn, and you will be warned about this when Popcorn is started
  372.       from any write protected (or read only) media.
  373.     * Word wrapping in the Mail Editor can now be toggled on/off
  374.       using the "Word Wrap" item on the Edit menu.
  375.     * Popcorn now accepts using IP addresses for the POP and SMTP servers
  376.       (enter an IP address in the "POP Server" and/or "SMTP Server" fields
  377.       in the User Profile manager)
  378.     * Popcorn can now redirect mail items you receive to one or more new
  379.       recipients. Redirecting a mail item is almost like forwarding it,
  380.       except that the mail is sent to the new recipient(s) EXACTLY like you
  381.       received it (the originator address, date etc. is not changed).
  382.       This feature is available through the Mail menu, or through the new
  383.       redirect button on the toolbar (next to the forward button).
  384.       PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS FEATURE IS EXPERIMENTAL!
  385.     * Popcorn now properly decodes ISO MIME Base64 encoded header fields
  386.       (sometimes present in mail sent with Microsoft Outlook).
  387.     * Hyperlink URLs can now be turned off for the mail viewer and the
  388.       mail editor, this has to be done by manually editing the Popcorn.ini
  389.       file. Setting the "HyperlinkURLs" option to FALSE (under the 
  390.       "[PopcornSettings]" section) will turn off automatic hyperlinking of
  391.       URLs.

  393. Bug-fixes:
  394.     * Popcorn now remembers which tab was last displayed in the
  395.       User Profiles Manager ("Identity & Servers" or "Settings")
  396.       and restores this the next time the window is displayed.
  397.     * Popcorn now updates, shows and uses the correct path for
  398.       "Save Outgoing" (automatic saving of sent mail items) in the
  399.       Mail Editor if you compose, reply to or forward a mail item and
