TdfsSystemImageList v1.16
Description:
TdfsSystemImageList component which extends the TImageList component so that it
gives access to the Win32 system image list. The system image list is a list
of images owned by the Win32 operating system that is made up of all the
images the OS uses in things like Explorer.
NOTE: This component can and will provide access to the REAL system image
list. That means that if you make changes to the image list, those changes
are going to be reflected throughout the OS (i.e. Explorer, file open/save
dialogs, etc). If you will be doing something that requires modification of
the system image list, you must set the ShareImages property to FALSE. This
will create a COPY of the system image list, and you can make changes to it
without effecting other parts of the OS.

Installation:
Delphi 1:
* This component is not compatible with Delphi 1.
Delphi 2, C++Builder 1:
* Select the 'Component | Install' menu item.
* In the Install Components dialog, click the Add button.
* In the Add Module dialog, enter the full path name of the component's
registration unit (the unit that ends with 'Reg.pas', i.e.
'BrowseDrReg.pas') and click OK.
* In the Add Module dialog, click OK.
* The component library will be rebuilt and a new tab named 'DFS' will be
available on the Component Palette.
Delphi 3, 4, 5, C++Builder 3 & 4:
* Do one of the following:
+ Create a new package by selecting File | New and choosing Package from
the New tab in the dialog.
+ Open an existing package file. I suggest you do this if you already
have a package that you like to use for small, third party components.
I specifically have a package named "3rdParty.dpk" that I use for
small components that come from other people. Or, if you are using
several of my components, you might create a "DFS.dpk" package and
use it for all of my DFS components.
* In the resulting package window, click the Add button.
* In the Add dialog, on the Add Unit tab, enter the full path name of the
component's registration unit (the unit that ends with 'Reg.pas', i.e.
'BrowseDrReg.pas') and click OK.
* You may want to add the other source files (*.pas) to the package as
well in the same manner as you did the registration unit. While this is
not required, not doing it will cause compiler warnings when the package
is compiled. The component will function fine either way, but I
personally find the warnings very irritating and am not happy until
every compiler warning and hint is gone.
* If this package is new, or it has never been installed, click the
Install button in the package window. If this package is already
installed in Delphi, click the Compile button.
C++Builder 5 and up:
* Perform the "Delphi 3 and up, C++Builder 3 and up" steps above, except
for the last step (Compile or Install).
* Select the package the component has been added to, and choose
Project | Edit Option Source to open the package options in the editor.
* In the entry for PFLAGS, add the "-LUvcl50" option. For example:
<PFLAGS value="-$YD -$W -$O -v -JPHNE -M -LUvcl50"/>
* Perform the final step from above, Compile or Install.
* For Borland's official word on this situation, open the C++Builder help
file and search the index for "dsgnintf.dcu" and see the "Compiling
packages with DsgnIntf" section.
Delphi 6 and up:
* Perform the "Delphi 3, 4, 5, C++Builder 3 & 4" steps above, except
for the last step (Compile or Install).
* Add the DesignIDE package to the Requires list of the package into which
the component is being installed.
* Perform the final step from above, Compile or Install.
* This is necessary because of changes to the design-time support units
introduced in Delphi 6. For complete information, see the Del6New.hlp
file in your Delphi 6 Help directory. In the index, search for
"upgrade issues" and in the resulting list of topics, select the
"DsgnIntf renamed and related changes" topic.
Using C++Builder with Delphi Set Types:
A special note to C++Builder programmers: Using set types such as the
TSystemFileAttributes type declared in SystemImageList.pas is not as
straightforward in C++ as it is in ObjectPascal. For example, calling the
GetImageIndex method in Delphi would look like this:
SysImgList.GetImageIndex('c:\somefile.dat', FALSE, []);
or:
SysImgList.GetImageIndex('c:\somefile.dat', FALSE, [sfaReadOnly, sfaHidden]);
However, in C++Builder, the job is a bit more convoluted. For those of you
not yet familiar with sets in C++Builder (there is info in the help file),
here are the two examples above translated for you:
SysImgList->GetImageIndex("c:\somefile.dat", false, TSystemFileAttributes());
and:
SysImgList->GetImageIndex("c:\somefile.dat", false,
TSystemFileAttributes() << sfaReadOnly << sfaHidden);
Because you don't need to pass file attributes if the file you are querying
exists, you will probably be calling with an empty set very often. I suggest
using a macro for this just to make it more readable, and require less typing:
#define SIL_NO_ATTRS TSystemFileAttributes()
Please see the Builder help file if you need more information than that, as
that's about the full extent of my knowledge of sets in C++Builder. :)

v1.14: + Reworked the GetImageIndex functions. Some didn't need the Attrs
parameter (it wasn't used), and those that did now have an
AlwaysUseAttrs parameter. This was introduced to allow you to
specify that you always want to use the attributes passed. If this
is false, the functions will try to figure out what the attributes
are by looking at the thing you are querying for. This is useful
because you probably don't want the functions to look at things like
the A: drive. Instead, you would pass [sfaDirectory] as the
attributes parameter and TRUE for AlwaysUseAttributes. That way it
won't try to figure out the attributes, and thus cause the drive to
spin up. Not good at all if there's no disk in the drive.
+ A couple of the GetIconIndex functions used Application.MainForm.
This was bad if you didn't have an Application.MainForm, or it hadn't
been set yet (i.e. in the main form's OnCreate event). Fixed by
Christian Stein, many thanks.
+
v1.13: + It's *really* D5 compatible now. Small change between the D5 eval
version and the real, shipping D5 version broke it.

v1.11: + Added Open parameter to all the functions and methods to get an
image index for an "open" item. Generally, this only applies for
things like directories as most items' open image is the same as the
normal image. For example, you'd assign the open index to a tree
node's SeectedImage property to make it behave like explorer.
v1.10: + Added methods for getting the image index for PIDLs (PItemIDLists),
and for special shell items like Control Panel. For example, to get
the image index for the Desktop item, you could do the following:
ImageIndex := SystemImageList1.GetImageIndex(siDesktop, FALSE, []);
The same has been added for the GetFileInformation method.
NOTE: These are overloaded functions in D4, so the method names are
the same (GetImageIndex, GetFileInformation). Overloading was only
introduced in D4, so in prior versions the methods are named
GetImageIndexPIDL and GetImageIndexSpecial (same scheme for
GetFileInformation).
v1.00: + Initial public release. The following items are included for those
who are upgrading from the old Beta 3 version. All beta history has
been removed as it is not of general interest.
+ Removed the inherited "ImageList Editor" component editor (on the
component context menu, also the one you get if you double click it).
The Delphi image list editor doesn't seem to be able to handle the
system image list, I suspect because it is so large.
+ Version property was stored, but it shouldn't have been. You may get
an error about this property not existing (or something similar) when
you open a project that used an older version; just tell it to ignore
it and everything should be fine.
+ Added Selected parameter to TdfsSystemImageList.GetImageIndex and
GetFileInformation methods, GetIconIndex function,
+ Demo rewritten. It's now a little more useful, showing your basic
explorer-type app.
