- The downloadable version of WinTune requires an Intel-compatible CPU
- running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, or Windows 2000. It does not
- use a Web browser while running the tests. After you've run the tests,
- you may upload your results for analysis using almost any web browser.
-
- PLEASE CLOSE ALL OTHER PROGRAMS BEFORE INSTALLING OR RUNNING WINTUNE.
- We suggest this for two reasons:
-
- 1) We don't want you to risk losing any work, and
- 2) We don't want you to get spurious scores because of interference from
- other programs that hog system resources.
-
- Installation Notes (please read!):
- ----------------------------------
-
- - UPDATED SYSTEM FILES: This package installs three Microsoft OLE
- Automation files that are newer than Windows 98. They are OLEAUT32.DLL,
- OLEPRO32.DLL, and STDOLE2.TLB. The original versions of the files will
- be saved in your Windows\sysbckup directory.
-
- - TEMP DIRECTORY: If you have your TEMP directory set to a RAM disk, or
- if you have it set to a disk other than the one from which Windows 9x
- boots, the WinTune98 installation program can fail to update the OLE
- Automation files. We strongly recommend that you remove any
- environment settings for the TEMP directory, and allow it to use its
- default, prior to attempting to install WinTune98. We are working with
- Microsoft on a fix for this problem and will post it as soon as it is
- available.
-
- You can check your TEMP environment variable (and all your environment
- variables) by typing "SET" at an MS-DOS prompt. You can change your
- environment variable settings by editing AUTOEXEC.BAT (or in Windows
- NT, by using the System control panel) and rebooting.
-
- This problem does not affect versions of WinTune prior to 1.0.24.
-
- - IF YOU WANT TO UPGRADE FROM AN OLDER VERSION, be sure to uninstall the
- older version and rename or delete the older download before downloading
- the current version.
-
- - IF YOU HAVE AN ORIGINAL WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM, the OpenGL ActiveX
- component will not be able to register itself because the OpenGL
- libraries are not present. This is normal: do not be alarmed. Ignore the
- error and continue the installation.
-
- - IF YOU HAVE A WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM THAT HAS NEVER SEEN A DIRECT3D GAME,
- the Direct3D ActiveX component will not be able to register itself. This
- is normal: do not be alarmed. Ignore the error and continue the
- installation.
-
- - IF YOUR SYSTEM CRASHES DURING THE DIRECT3D OR OPENGL TEST, the most
- common cause is a bad video driver.
-
- If you do have a problem, see the troubleshooting page at

-
- - Our 3D tests do not currently exercise add-in 3D accelerators such as
- the Diamond Monster 3D II board. These boards typically do not support
- windowed display modes, and we do not currently offer full-screen 3D
- tests.
