FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions (updated Jan 10/2000)
~~~
Q: I downloaded the update but when I try to run it, it says some
files are missing. Where can I get these files?
A: The update is for people who have already installed the full
release, or who already have all the runtimes. Try installing
the complete release, then the update (if it is a newer version).
Q: I get the error message: MMSYSTEM...
A1: Your MS MediaPlayer may be out of date, or the file you are trying
to play is unsupported. Download MS MediaPlayer 6.4 or higher.
A2: The file may be corrupt or incompatible with MediaPlayer. Sometimes
with MP3 files an incorrectly written ID3Tag can cause problems. Use
a program such as WinAmp to remove the tag and try it again.
Q: I used to be able to play RealAudio/Video files but now I can't.
What happened?
A: Support was available in MediaPlayer 6.0, but was removed for later
versions. If you absolutely need to play Real files you must install
the old 6.0 version of MediaPlayer.
Q: What is the difference between the MPEGVideo and ActiveMovie device?
A: Nothing. They are the same, unless you have installed an MPEG or DVD
decoder card. These cards re-assign the MPEGVideo device to use the
hardware decoder. Unfortunately they don't support all the file formats
that the Microsoft driver does. ActiveMovie is simply the Microsoft
driver with a different name. See the readme for details.
Q: Why does the FMTuner component stop working?
A: The FMTuner component must be registered.
Q: How do I listen to FM Radio on the internet?
A: Mimic does not yet support internet radio, only FM tuner cards.
Q: Does Mimic support [insert your favorite file type here] files?
When will it support them?
A: Mimic uses MediaPlayer as it's playback engine and supports any
format that MediaPlayer does. MediaPlayer is extensible via CODECs,
so try upgrading MediaPlayer.
Q: When is the next release?
A: I have no set schedule. I release updates when I feel there are enough
new or useful features to warrant a new release. If you are looking
for new features please e-mail me and tell me what you want. I can't
guarantee I will add them but the more requests I receive the greater
chance I will consider it.
