Nano-Electronics:

Once mankind developed silicon-based electronic devices, the race began
to put more and more components on a single piece of silicon.  By the
time mankind began colonization of the galaxy, .05 micron technology had
been developed. Soon after, the effort to manipulate individual
molecules to form transistors, and other discrete devices, became the
research priroity.

Nano-technology allows massive quantities of electronic components to be
placed on a substrate. Far more powerful logical devices are the result.

Phasors:

Phasors, particle analogs of lasers, are coherent beams of particles.
Phasors take advantage of the dual wave/particle nature of matter.
Phasors were developed originally as weapons but may have application in
the communications area.

Cold Fusion:

In the last two-and-a-half centuries, mankind has harnessed nuclear
fission and fusion.  However, both technologies produce the undesirable
side effect of radioactive materials.  In addition, fission and fusion
reactors both are the size of a stadium.  Pons and Fleischmann, working
in the late 20th century, proposed that in the lattice of certain pure
metals deuterium forced into the lattice under pressure would fuse to
form helium. │

The theory was never proven or disproven, but in the mid 21st century,
after the creation of a Casmir Effect Bubble, scientists created "cold"
fusion within the bubble.  By "cold fusion" they meant there was not the
high neutron flux that eventually turned the containment vessel of a
"hot" fusion reactor radioactive.  This used the attraction within the
energy-depleted vacuum of the Casmir Effect to create a low-level and
easily controllable fusion reaction. │

Photon Weapons:

A photon is the elementary particle that makes up light waves. As with
all elementary particles, it can be described as both a wave and a
particle. Mankind has found a way to utilize this dual nature by
encasing them in specialized containers.  One new method of packaging
photons is by placing them into small, oval-shaped capsules called
"photon torpedoes".  When used as weapons, these torpedoes release
massive amounts of energy upon a target.

Deflectors:

The development of high-powered energy weapons, like photons and
phasors, has gradually rendered physical missile devices obsolete. A new
method of protection has been developed to prevent ships from being
mauled by energy weapons.  Deflectors use electromagnetic energy to
shift the path of these energy weapons by a few degrees, limiting the
damage they inflict.

Nano-Frequencies:

Free frequencies in the visible light, microwave, and radio portions of
the electromagnetic spectrum were no longer available. This technology,
mislabeled by the press as "Nano-Frequences", takes advantage of the
quantum nature of photons to encode more data in a given signal. The
advent of powerful new computers based on Nano-Electronics has enable
us to process these signals. │

Brainwave Mapping:

For years mankind has attempted to figure out exactly how the brain
works.  Thanks to this breakthrough, scientists are able to understand
every portion of the brain, and how to deal with its chemical and
electrical activities.  We should be able to design more powerful and
sophisticated computer systems based on this map.

Universal Translator:

Our scientists have been working long and hard on some method of
communicating with the other races in this galaxy. The signals we
have been receiving leave no doubt that they are aware of us.
Communications with these civilizations has become a top priority.

It has been clear that our understanding of language structure does not
apply to these non-human races' "languages."  This translator is based
on the belief that certain concepts are fundamental to any intelligent
life form.  By monitoring the electromagnetic and electrochemical
activity of an individual, we should be able to translate at least
certain basic concepts.

Critics contend that the basic assumptions for this device are too
risky. Dr. Valeaz, from the Partners Research Center in New Dallas,
believes that Terrans may be unique in having a central brain structure.
"It is arrogant presumption to assume all intelligent creatures store
all their 'eggs' in one basket." Dr. Valeaz said. "For example, they may
have their intelligence distributed throughout their body and not just
in a certain area.  Moreover, we can't assume that these beings are even
humanoid.  If these races are vastly different from us then this device
will be useless.  The odds of them being humanoid are pretty slim."

With the aid of the Universal Translator, the various fledgling
companies that were on board the Santa Maria are already preparing to
set up intergalactic trading once more technology in the area of Trade
is discovered.  The Universal Translator is also our best hope for
having any sort of diplomatic relationships with any alien civilizations
we encounter. │

Nano-Metal Composition:

While any blast furnace engineer could have told you how excellent-grade
metals are made, no method of discretely manipulating the individual
molecules of a given metal has previously been possible. With the
invention of Nano-Metal Composition, mankind can now create metals of
extreme durability, which are also incredibly light. │

This will allow our engineers to develop extremely dense metals for
stronger ships and far larger structures than mankind has ever been able
to build before.

Tri-Strontium Alloys:

These alloys can withstand incredible pressure and heat with a mass only
1/100th that of conventional steel.  These alloys allow the construction
of incredibly large systems and structures at minimal cost.

High Density Metals:

High Density Metals allow the blending of various alloys for great
strength, that can be produced with less labor and expense.

Large Scale Building:

Thanks to the development of various metal alloys, immense structures,
of remarkable complexity, can now be built.  Large Scale Building relies
heavily on excellent engineering and the recent development of such
advanced materials as Tri-Strontium Alloys.

Terra Computers:

Terra Computers represent the first wave of the powerful computer
systems that will supply our planets with all the computational power
they could possibly need. They are capable of processing several
trillion instructions per millisecond.

Hyper Computers:

The second wave of powerful computer systems. These super computers are
capable of processing several trillion instructions per microsecond. │

Omni Computers:

Omni Computers are the third wave of powerful computer, We have begun
the move away from gigantic computers toward the integration of computer
intelligence into the organics of life.  In essence, the environment
itself will have near infinite computing potential. They are capable
of handling several trillion instructions per picosecond. │

Galactic Diplomacy:

With the invention of Universal Translators, our anthropologists and
sociologists went into overdrive to learn as much as possible about all
the known alien races.  As we learn about additional races, diplomatic
relations will be immediately available.

Galactic Diplomacy allows for:
        - Treaties with Alien Races
        - Alliances with Alien Races. (Once you attain the
                "Alliances" level of diplomacy.)

Note though, that when an alliance treaty is signed, you are bound by it.
To break an Alliance treaty means to go to war with the race you are
allied with.  Moreover, when a race you are allied with goes to war, you
too are obligated go to war against your ally's enemy. │

With the development of Diplomacy, a wide range of subjects can now be
discussed from the GIA control center.

Galactic Trade:

Galactic Trade will greatly benefit our systems.  With trade, you can
send freighters to different races' systems to create permanent trade
routes.  Both races benefit equally from trade routes.

Keep in mind, during times of war, trade routes to enemies are
disrupted.  This results in a loss of the profit from the affected trade
routes until the war is over (or you capture the systems in question). │

Alliances:

You can ally yourself with other races.  Bear in mind though, that when
an ally goes to war with a third race, you go to war with that race as
well.  Alliances can only be ended by declaring war on your ally!

Star Democracy:

A Star Democracy is a significant governmental change for an
intergalactic civilization such as ours.  A lot of Imperial limits on
trade are lifted under this form of government, and the amount of
commerce is increased within each star system.  All in all, the Star
Democracy is a superior form of government compared to the older
Imperial system that we began with. │

However, critics of this new form of government have brought up a
significant problem with the system: "What if the people are
unhappy?  They now have the option of leaving the civilization and being
independent.  In a totally unknown galaxy filled with alien
civilizations, some of which are bound to be hostile, can we afford to
just let star systems break free and be independent?  What will the
military do if they riot and break away?" asked Dr. Brown of the
Orioz Center for Political Studies. │

The leaders of our civilization will have to weigh the pros and cons to
make the best decision.

Star Federation:

Star Democracy brought us a limited amount of independence for star
systems.  However, the central government was still by far the
controlling hand in internal affairs.  The newly proposed Star
Federation form of government sets things up where each star system is
equal.  This encourages people to freely mingle from one star system to
another, without worrying about the standing of a particular star
system. In other words, the approval rating is no longer the most
important factor in determining how well a planet does economically.

Professor Matthew O'Brien of the Arkor University comments on the new
system: "The government now has the task of keeping people happy by
continuing the construction of expensive social projects.  Since the
population of a particular planet is no longer dependent on their
happiness, it is a lot more likely that they will get unhappy.  If they
get unhappy enough, they may rebel and the government will lose entire
star systems."

On the other hand, the added economic benefits of a federation of
systems over a simple democracy are significant. │

Turbo Phasors:

Our research has enabled us to increase our phasors' coherent particle
beam density.  Now they pack a greater punch.

Mega Phasors:

Once again we have increased the particle beam density of our phasors.
The effect has been described as running into a lead planet at light
speed.

Instant Communication:

We are now able to communicate with anyone, anywhere, at any time.  As
long as we are aware of a race's existence, we can communicate with
them.

1D Phasing:

Certain theories of Quantum Mechanics predicts that space/time consists
of more than 4 dimensions.  Two alternate theories of the structure
have been debated for centuries.  The first, the Klein-Kalusa Theory,
consists of the extra dimensions "looping back" on themselves so that
the effective size is not noticed in our space/time.  The second, the
Visser Theory, views the extra dimensions as an energy well with our
space/time the bottom of the energy well.  To use the extra dimensions
would require adding hugh amounts of energy to a system.  It has now
been shown experimentally, that the latter theory is correct.  The
energy developed from a Casmir Effect Bubble is required to enter this
space dimension. │

2D Phasing:

Building on the advance of 1D Phasing technology, an additional space
dimension has been opened.  The fifth space dimension is now available
for our use.  Quantum Mechanics predicts additional space dimensions as
well as an additional time dimension.  This advanced technology appears
interesting but no use has yet been found. │

3D Phasing:

Building upon the base of 1D Phasing and 2D Phasing, a sixth space
dimension has been opened.  This means that we can build "wormholes"
similar to the one that brought mankind to this galaxy.  The main
problem is that time is not completely stable in these wormholes.  This
brings up an interesting question: "Is the human race actually still in
the Milky Way, but somewhere in the Earth's future or past?" │

Impulse Drive

The more effective energy output and the greatly reduced size of
a "cold" fusion reactor has allowed humanity to increase the
effectiveness of the Micro Impulse Drive.  The "fold" in space, which
depends on both the mass of the ship and the nearby mass concentration,
is doubled for a Colony Wagon.  Thus the effective speed of a ship the
size of a Colony Wagon has been doubled.  Small ships also have received
a speed boost but not as great as that for a Colony Wagon.  A Colony
Wagon now moves at the rate of 2 parsecs per year.  The main problem
with this drive is still the relatively small steps by the Micro Impulse
Drive that are made to accomplish ship movement. │

Organic Manipulation:

For centuries, mankind has manipulated the genes of fruits and
animals to provide superior sources of food and raw materials.  Now we
have developed the ability to handle DNA, RNA and proteins at the amino
acid level.  What will be done with this new ability?

Genetic Manipulation:

The complete mapping of the human DNA structure was accomplished by the
early 21st century.  This was quickly followed by the mapping of the DNA
structure of most known species.  This was the "What" question.  Organic
Manipulation answered the "How" question.  With Genetic Manipulation we
have answered the "Why" question.  We now know why a given DNA set
creates a given organism.  Now we can create new organisms.

Molecular Medicine:

We have moved on to fixing genetic injuries and mutations with this new
form of medicine.  Molecular Medicine allows doctors to alter the DNA of
damaged or defective cells to produce normal cells.  Suffering
throughout our civilization has been immensely decreased. │

Transporters:

Transporters allow personnel to be transferred instantaneously from one
position to another.  The drawback to this new technology is that it
requires immense amounts of power.

Anti-matter:
While the existence of antimatter has been known for a couple of
centuries, it was extremely difficult to work with.  Containment was
energy-intensive and contamination from vacuum energy made it difficult
to control a reaction within safe parameters.  The scalable energy
source created by "cold" fusion overcame the containment energy problem.
Use of the Casmir Effect Bubble as the reactor vessel allowed the
reaction to be controlled within very exacting parameters. │

Warp Drive:

The antimatter reactors allowed a vast amount of energy to be produced
with very little reaction mass.  This allowed humanity to overcome the
setup problem of the Micro Impulse Drive.  Even though the Warp Drive is
a Micro Impulse Drive, the quantum nature of the impulses used is below
the level of human recognition.  Therefore it has been described as
continuous folding of space.  In actuality it is a rapid folding of
space in small increments. │

Replication:

Copying a living organism is called Cloning.  The duplication of a
non-living object is called Replication.  With Replication, many
different types of materials can be produced from other, more basic,
components.  For example, a ship can be loaded with quantities of a
simple type of matter (like rock), and with a replicatator, can change
that matter into whatever form is desired (such as food). │

While only capable of replicating objects of lesser densities,
replication will help feed millions throughout the galaxy.

Artificial Life:

A very controversial technology, we can now create a new life form
purely from engineering.  This is not the same as cloning.  These new
life forms are as unique as any other natural life form.  The difference
is that their exact characteristics were predetermined by genetic
engineers, not random natural processes. │

4D Phasing:

After being able to show and do limited use of the 3 additional
space dimensions, the second time dimension has been opened.
While time travel may be possible under this discovery, the more
important part is that time-stable wormholes theoretically can be
developed.  The possibility of finding our home planet is now real.

Sensors:

Radar allowed mankind to determine the position of objects from a
limited distance.  Sensors are the newest refinement on this old
concept.  One could argue that radar was when mankind really invented
sensors since these new advanced systems capable of detecting any sized
object from extreme distances are merely an evolutionary step from the
primitive radar of old.  However, this new breakthrough is such a leap
over the existing electromagnetic technologies that they have been
placed in a new class: Sensors. │

Battleship Technology:

Strategic Defender Systems today introduced the new "Battleship" class
starship.  This starship is equipped with the latest deflector
technology (the recently developed Shields), along with the powerful
state-of-the-art Warp Drive propulsion system. │

Shields:

Deflectors merely changed the angle of an enemy energy weapon.  Shields
actively attempt to discharge those energy weapons.  However, the key
difference is that Deflectors do not get worn down, while Shields do.
To work their magic, Shields discharge themselves as much as the weapon
being fired.  Against powerful weapons though, the protection afforded
by Shields is a must.  As long as the shields have some charge, a
ship's armor remains undamaged (unlike with Deflectors).

Planetary Defense:

By scaling up the Shield Technology to planetary size, we have enhanced
the defensive abilities of starships orbiting our planets.  If our
planets are attacked, our ships can remain behind the planetary defense
and fire out.  Incoming weapon attacks are partially discharged by the
fields, which lessens the damage inflicted on our starships.

Cloaking:

Cloaking permits ships to move nearly undetected by sensors. It does
not, despite the recent press reports, make ships invisible.  Future
Battleships will automatically be equipped with Cloaking Technology.
Unlike most ships, after these new ships are found by an enemy, they
cannot be tracked beyond visual or sensor range.

Drones:

Drones are cheap robotic devices capable of limited attacks against
enemy positions.
@
Artificial Satellites: │

While satellites are nothing new to us, having an artificial moon is.
These gigantic space stations are capable of housing millions of people
if necessary.  Believe it or not, the power necessary to maintain its
artificial gravity would be sufficient to shut down the fusion reaction
inside of a star.  Why anyone would want to do this is unknown.

It is believed, by the scientific community, that it might be possible
to build gigantic space stations capable of moving through space on
their own.  The weapon potential is frightening.

Terraforming:

As we have known for a long time, most planets are not really well-
suited for colonies.  While we can already colonize almost any planet,
we know that choosing poor planets to colonize only welcomes failure.
Terraforming allows planets of lesser quality to be colonized.  Let it
be known, however, that this does not mean that all planets are good for
colonization.  Terraforming simply means that we can colonize poor
worlds more successfully than before. │

Antimatter Weapons: │

While antimatter has been a boon to mankind, in terms of the amount of
power it can produce, it was only a matter of time before antimatter
was developed for use in weapons.  The National Antimatter Institute of
New Boston has developed a weapon capable of incinerating 2/3 of the
surface of a given planet.  One wonders what will be next. │

Hyperspace:

Hyperspace utilizes the equations quantizing gravity and
space/time to more effectively fold space.  This involves the
temporary creation of flaws, or "cosmic strings", in space/time which
generate a massive gravitational field.  The Micro Impulse/Warp
Drive uses the field to accomplish a larger "folding" of space.
This increases our starfleet's effective speed. │

Planetary Destruction

Mankind has known how to devastate the surface of planets for a long
time (since the nuclear age).  We have now advanced to the point of
being able to completely destroy a planet, leaving only asteroids.

Star Destruction:

The easiest way to destroy a star is to stop the fusion reaction at its
core.  To do this, a great deal of energy must be focused on the star's
core.  Easier said than done?  Not anymore...

Artificial Planets:

Creating a huge space ship is one thing, being able to create a living,
organic planet is another.  We now can, theoretically, build our own
planets.  The only thing preventing us from populating the galaxy with
these planets is the slight problem of getting sufficient matter to
build them. │

Terror Star:

This is a frightening technology.  If it falls into the wrong hands, we
might as well kiss our civilization good-bye.  These gigantic battle
stations are capable of directing a huge energy pulse at the inner core
of a star.  When the pulse hits the core, it short-circuits the fusion
reaction, destroying the star and all the worlds around it. │

Artificial Gravity:
(Controlled)

This is probably one of the most practical technologies we have ever
developed.  One of the problems with space travel (that is not commonly
known) is that people don't do well in zero-gravity. There are several
problems associated with zero gravity: │

* People usually spend a couple days adjusting to it.  This time period
  is usually spent in a bathroom.
* Organic life forms do not adjust well to going back to a planet with
  significant gravity after being in an environment with no gravity.

We now can put artificial gravity on all our ships, thus easing the
discomfort caused by long distant travel. │

With Warp and Phasing technologies, brief spacial rifts have been
opened.  Many of our citizens believe that we will soon be able to find
our long lost home--Earth.

Dreadnought Technology:

Strategic Defender Systems continues its dominance of the military
industry with its latest addition to our defensive capability.  The new
"Dreadnought" class of Battleships has moved out of the prototype stage,
and into production.  This new weapon is equipped with even more
powerful Photon Torpedoes, along with the recently developed
Transporters.  Shuttles are no longer needed to transfer people or
materials from ship to surface.  The Transporters can teleport someone
to any target that is within 250,000 kilometers.

Ranger Technology:

The Dreadnought class of Battleships is about to be eclipsed with the
new Ranger-class star ship.  Recently trademarked by Intergalactic
Military Machines (IMM), the Ranger should send a signal to all our
enemies that we mean business!

Avatar Technology:

Strategic Defense Systems has recently developed a new and improved
Battleship class. The new 'Avatar' class is head and shoulders more
powerful than previous types of Battleships. │

Advanced Artificial Intelligence

As the power of computers has increased, so has the demand for powerful
operating systems and interfaces.  Everyone can remember the trend in
the late 20th century when a company called MicroSoftware Systems
continually produced low quality operating systems that were behind the
hardware by several generations.  By the end of the century, this trend
had been ended by the development of newer operating systems by other
companies.  Since then, public demand for advanced operating
environments has continued to grow.

Galactic Business Machines has recently unveiled OS/2000 V1.0, an
advanced operating system that includes a new nano-kernel technology,
driving a powerful artificial intelligence engine.  This operating
system works with the user in a way that vastly improves the operating
environment they work with.  Such operating environments are likely to
be the key to developing advanced technologies in the future. │

Excalibur Technology:

New from Valiant Dynamics: the Excalibur-class Battleships!  These new
Excaliburs are beyond powerful.  They ships are cheap and devastating
weapons.  Those that would attempt to destroy us have new reason to
think twice about trying! │

Evolution Control:

In the past couple of centuries, our colonies have begun finding minor,
but growing, differences at the genetic level.  It has been speculated
that within a millennium, there could be significant genetic differences
between the citizens of two different planets.

To help alleviate this problem we have developed the technology to
control Evolution, to a degree. While adapting to one's native
environment is important, certain random traits can be eliminated,
slowing the diverging evolutionary paths.  Each citizen will have the
option to use this program and keep their genetic line from diverging
from that of humans on other colonies.

For example, on the continent of Novaria (on one of our colonies), the
number of children being born without any body hair on the arms and legs
is 25% higher than anywhere else in our civilization.  Other diverging
differences include ear size, toe usability, nose size, etc.  While some
of these changes can be attributed to a small gene pool (a typical
colony may start out with less than 50,000 colonists), the environment
has been shown to play a key role.

The original colony planners (long ago on Earth) never considered this
to be a major problem because it was believed that suitable worlds would
be so rare that the problem would not occur.  Our own Milky Way galaxy
may indeed be short on Earth-like worlds, but this galaxy has no
shortage of habitable planets, which makes this issue an important one.

Star Creation:

We now have within our means the ability to create a star!  GalactCorp
has recently released the plans for the StarGen Star Creation Device.
This device, over a period of several years, will create a star in a
given area.  The only current problem is that the amount of energy
required is so high that it would require enough mass to wipe out
several solar systems. │

It has been dismissed by the commercial industries as merely an
interesting, if not particularly useful, technology.  Steven Chang of
NovaCorp had this to say: "Being able to create an entire star is indeed
incredible but what commercial use does that have?  Moreover, the types
of stars that this technology can create are fairly narrow.  You cannot,
for example, create a mid-sized yellow star, the type generally needed
to sustain an Earth-like planet.  Only tiny white dwarf type stars can
be created, which would only be useful as interstellar litter." │

Galactic Understanding:

A series of new E-books has been released by Dr. Everett Kidell.  These
books explain in details many "secrets" of the Universe.  The scientific
community, while still somewhat skeptical, is in general agreement over
most of the books' points. │

The books contain very little original material.  However, the key to
the success of these books is the way all the topics are put together.
An ancient Earth book once held that the answer to everything was the
number 42.  At the time, this premise was considered a crock.
Ironically, according to the new E-books the answer is just about that
simple.  If you want to know the answer to the meaning of life, the
secret of the Universe, and everything else, then you will have to
purchase "The Answer Book" by Dr. Kidell.

4D Philosophy:

The "discovery" of the second time dimension has caused a revolution in
humanity's basic philosophy.  Many researchers believe that this
revolution is necessary before a human attempt to enter this additional
dimension is made.  Now humanity has a basis for understanding the
differences involved in the 3 additional space dimensions and the
additional time dimensions. │

Controlled Wormholes:

A limited controlled wormhole has been built.  Though the
theoretical basis for this wormhole is unknown, engineers have
been able to used the data from the original Santa Maria to
construct a wormhole back to our original space/time.  A small
research ship was sent back to Earth.  The flora and fauna of
Earth was unchanged except for the absence of humanity.  What
happened to them?

The size of this wormhole and the lack of a theoretical basis on
which to enlarge it and direct it, limits this technology to
research.

4D Folding:

Using spacial rifts, we have been able to warp space in the new
dimension (that we still have been unable to enter).  This means that
we will soon be able to create a warp drive that will function in that
dimension (after we figure out how to create devices that can safely
exist there).

4D Entrance:

Engineers building on the past scientific opening of additional
dimensions have succeeded in building an "entrance" into the
additional space/time dimension.  However the basic quark/lepton
structure of the matter sent was altered.  Though the
quark/lepton structure of matter sent through the "entrance" was
restored, the entire atomic structure as well as the molecular
structure was lost.  The crew of the first probe ship scheduled
to go through the "entrance" declined the honor.

4D Transformation:

Scientists have developed a method of returning the
atomic/molecular structure of matter sent into the 4D "entrance"
to its original form.  It is clear that the form matter takes in
the extra space/time dimensions is not fully understood.

4D Wormholes:

The work in the additional space/time dimension has enabled a
wormhole to be created that accesses other parts of our
space/time.  However, only the local end of this wormhole can be
controlled.  The placement of the other end is still
uncontrollable.

Controlled 4D Wormholes:

The wormholes through the extra space/time dimension have been
stabilized.  This means the distant end of the wormhole can be
controlled in terms of our normal space/time coordinates.  Though
not stable in the time sense, these wormholes can be created and
used between any two points as needed.  This will improve trade.

Near Omniscience:

Scientists have recently concluded an extensive examination of our
knowledge base.  They have declared that our knowledge about
everything is greater than that which remains unknown.

Near Omnipotence:

Devices of incredible power are now extremely inexpensive and easy to
fashion.  Future wars will likely result in the destruction of one of
the involved races.  In other words, nobody had better mess with us. │

Galactic Creation:

Intergalactic Military Machines (IMM) and GalactiCorp recently merged to
form Creator Corporation.  The new company recently released the Creator
