Aboout QuickStar Phone Guard program
====================================
Congradulations! You now have one of the most smart computer
telephone answering program in your hand.
QuickStar Phone Guard (QFGUARD) turns your computer into a
smart answer machine program. When you are not at home, it will answer
incoming phone calls after designated number of phone rings, and prompt
the caller to do different things, like leave a new message, listen
to the message you left for callers.
After the caller hand up, QFGUARD will automatically dial out
certain phone number to reach you at work, at a friend's home or in a
hotel room and let you hear the new messages, or it may page your
beeper, or it will wait until you come home or call in to find out
the new messages. Certainly, you can call back home at any thing and
instruct QFGUARD to change it's setting or phone number to call, so it
can keep a track of where you are and can always reach you when there's
important messages you need to know, no matter where you go. It's like
you have a loyal house keeper at home taking care of all your Phone
calls. In the future, depends on user feedbacks, more features will
be implemented to handle not only voice calls, but also data and fax
calls, as well as E-Mails, too!
Good news is, if you register QFGUARD now at the flat $35 fee,
you will remain a registered user of QFGUARD for as long as I continue
to support this program, and newest version is always avlaible to you
without further registration fee, even if the registration fee will go
up in the future.
This shareware program is fully functional! This version of
the QuickStar Phone Guard was released on July 14, 1998. You may also
find the program's version information in it's help menu. If it has
been some time since this program's release date. You can visit the
author's World Wide Web site to download a newer version at this web
address:

QuickStar Phone Guard program are released in three differnt
packages for different operating systems. The DOS version is for use
in MS-DOS operating system. The Windows 16 bit version is for use in
the Windows 3.1 environment. And the Windows 32 bit version is good
for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT. The DOS program can also be used in
a DOS window launched from Win 3.1 or Win95/98/NT. The Windows 16 bit
version is also good for Win95/98/NT.
If this is the original readme.1st file from the QFGUARD.ZIP
zipped distribution package. You have the Windows 32 bit version of the
QuickStar Phone Guard, which is written for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT.
The package contains the following files:
Readme.1st This file you are reading now
Manual.txt User Manual of QuickStar Phone Guard
QFGUARD.EXE The only main executable program
QFGUARD.LOG The message log file for QFGUARD.
****.WAV A couple dozen various sound WAV files
for QFGUARD to use. They are standard
WAV files and you can play them with
any sound record or play program.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Initial Set UP
The only thing you need to do before running QFGUARD for the
first time, is putting all files in appropriate directory.
If you use PKZ204G.EXE to unzip it. It will be easier. You
can simply make a new directory for QFGuard, and unzip using the -d
option so all original sub-directories are created upon unzip and
you can skip the rest of this section:
pkunzip -d qfguard.zip
You may put the main QFGUARD executable program and its log
file in any directory. But you MUST create a sub directory called
\SYSTEM and put all the original *.WAV files there.
For example you can create a new directory:
C:\QFGUARD\
to put the main program, all *.WAV files will then be put in
a subdirectory:
C:\QFGUARD\SYSTEM
You can copy the fiels to their destination directory in DOS
or in Windows pretty easily. If you are familiar with file copying,
skip this section now. Otherwise you can read instructions of how to
create directories and copy files.
Copy files in DOS:
Under DOS mode (in Windows 3.1 or Win95/NT, just start a DOS
box and then you can do DOS operations from there), type in:
mkdir c:\qfguard\system
This one step operation creates a new subdirectory
c:\qfguard\system
and certainly its mother directory
c:\QFGUARD
is created, too!
And then copy the program and the log files there:
copy qfguard.exe c:\qfguard
copy qfguard.log c:\qfguard
All the *.WAV files should then be copied in the subdirectory:
copy *.wav c:\qfguard.exe\system
Now all the files are copied.
Copy files in Windows 3.1
You can create directories, copy files in Windows 3.1 using the
File Manager. In Windows 3.1, choose the MAIN group, open the File Manager
program. Choose "File" and then "Create Directory"
Again you do not need to do it in two step to create the QFGUARD
directory and its \SYSTEM subdirectory. Just type in:
C:\QFGUARD\SYSTEM
and both directories are created.
Next select "File" and then "Copy". Fill in the "From" box with
the name of the file to be copied, and the "To" box with the destination
directory. To copy more than one file at a time, you can specify wild
card file names. For example:
From: C:\download\myfiles\*.wav
To: C:\QFGUARD\SYSTEM
This will copy all *.WAV files to the target directory at once.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set up the QuickStar Phone Guard Icon or Shortcut
Next you need to set up an icon or a short cut that you can
click the mouse cursor on and start the QFGUARD program.
Creating a new program group (skip this step if you want to use an
existing program group) in Windows 3.1:
In Windows 3.1, from the program manager, select "File" and
then "New...". A "New Program Object". Select "New Program Group".
Give the new program group a name and type it in the "Description"
box, like "Phone Guard". Leave the "Group file" box empty, and then
click OK. A new orpgram group is created.
Creating a new program icon:
Use the mouse to set focus on the program group where you
want to put the new QFGUARD icon, then from the program manager,
choose "File" and "New..." again, but this time you will select
the "New Program Item" instead. In the "Program Item Properties"
pop up box, choose "browse" to browse directory and find QFGUARD
program. Then Give it a name in the "Description" box. You may
also want to enter the QFGUARD directory as the working directory,
though it is not required. Select OK and you are all set!
Creating a new shortcut in Windows 95/98/NT
Move the mouse pointer to an empty space, then click the
right button of the mouse, a selection menu will pop up. Select
the "New", and then select "Shortcut". And then select "Browse"
to browse and find the QFGUARD program in the correct directory.
Clik OK and the QFGUARD icon will show up on desktop as a new
shortcut icon.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Running QFGUARD for the first time
Any modem programs need to know the COMM PORT to be able
to run properly. You have to tell QFGUARD the correct Comm Port
number. Fortunately this number can only be from Com1 to Com4.
And the Com1 is usually used by the mouse, leaving Com2 to Com4.
It is then not hard to find out the correct CommPort by trying
Com2 through Com4. Alert! Do NOT try COM1 unless you know what
you are doing!
QFGUARD will initially assume Com2 is the modem port,
and try to open it. If it is wrong, no damage will be done. The
program will spend a few more seconds trying to reset a stucked
modem, if that is the case, and finally give up and start the
main window to allow you to change the Comm Port setting.
If the CommPort is correct and the modem is working
properly, the start up will only take a fraction of second.
You may still need to configure the correct Init String and
the modem type to make it work properly.
Finally some legality issue before you try and enjoy
this wonderful answer machine program.
