Summary : LOADLIN
Description :
LOADLIN.EXE is a loader (running under DOS) for LINUX kernel images
which fully supports the kernel's command line feature. LOADLIN
(and BOOTLIN) are the safest ways to boot Linux from your hard disk.
If you have DOS (in addition to Linux) on your machine, LOADLIN is
the right tool for booting Linux.
In contrast to LILO, LOADLIN does not modify the master boot record.
Also, with LOADLIN, the physical location of the kernel image is not
important. With LILO, an update must be run each time the kernel
file is moved on the media (i.e. whenever you recompile the
kernel or restore the kernel image from a backup medium). This means
even if you have to restore your whole Linux filesystem because of a crash,
you can still reboot the system with LOADLIN.
All you need is LOADLIN.EXE and a kernel image (zImage) copied to your
DOS-partition.
Another good reason to install LOADLIN is that you can install a mini
emergency-system on a UMSDOS partition (such as MiniLinux). Then, you
can always boot this system with LOADLIN and you'll be able to repair
your main Linux system in those rare cases where you can't boot (i.e.
problems with your rc scripts or you simply forgot the root password).
