  49.      HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer.

  111.           Paper and Print Job Handling
  112.           ----------------------------
  113.  
  114.           The following paper and print job handling features can be 
  115.           used with the printer.
  116.  
  117.           *  Paper types and sizes:  The printer can print in color on 
  118.              a number of media types and sizes, including letter-size, 
  119.              legal-size, A3, A4, 11 by 17 inch, envelopes, card stock, 
  120.              heavy media up to 58 lb (216 g/m2) bond, and labels. 
  121.              Depending on the paper size and type, the optional duplex 
  122.              printing accessory enables color printing on two sides. 
  123.              For more information on paper and other media, see the 
  124.              online user's guide.
  125.  
  126.           *  Paper trays:  The printer has two 500-sheet input trays 
  127.              (trays 2 and 3) that support letter-, legal-, and 
  128.              A4-sized media. In addition, tray 3 supports 11-by-17 
  129.              inch and A3-sized media. Tray 1, a 100-sheet multipurpose 
  130.              tray, supports such media sizes and types as letter, 
  131.              legal, executive, A4, and custom-sized media (up to 12 by
  132.              18.5 inch), as well as envelopes, labels, and card stock.
  133.  
  134.              In addition to these three trays, an optional tray can be 
  135.              installed in the printer that holds up to 2,000 sheets of 
  136.              paper. For information on using the paper trays, see the 
  137.              online user's guide. For instructions on setting up the 
  138.              printer driver to print from the optional 2,000-sheet 
  139.              input tray, see the online Help.
  140.  
  141.           *  Optional duplex printing accessory:  An optional duplex 
  142.              printing accessory can be installed in the printer, 
  143.              allowing you to print in color on both sides of a page 
  144.              (often called duplex printing). For instructions on 
  145.              installing the duplex printing accessory, see the 
  146.              installation guide for the duplex printing accessory. See 
  147.              the online Help for information on how to set up the 
  148.              printer driver for duplex printing.
  149.  
  150.           *  Multi-bin mailbox:  A multi-bin mailbox can be installed 
  151.              with the printer that provides multiple output 
  152.              destinations for print jobs. The printer must have a 
  153.              2,000-sheet input tray before a multi-bin mailbox can be 
  154.              added. For more information on installing the multi-bin 
  155.              mailbox, see the installation guide for the multi-bin 
  156.              mailbox. See the online Help for information on how to 
  157.              set up the printer driver for using the multi-bin 
  158.              mailbox.

  160.           *  Proof and Print:  The Proof and Print feature allows you 
  161.              to print one copy of a job for proofreading and then 
  162.              quickly and easily print any remaining copies from the 
  163.              printer control panel. An optional hard disk is required 
  164.              to use this feature. For more information on using the 
  165.              Proof and Print feature, see the online Help.
  166.  
  167.           *  Reusable Settings:  Reusable Settings save a group of 
  168.              printer driver properties. If you print a document that 
  169.              requires setting several printer driver properties, such 
  170.              as printing a multiple-paged company letter that uses a 
  171.              different type of paper for the first page than the rest 
  172.              of the pages, the properties can be saved and used to 
  173.              print similar documents. See the printer driver online 
  174.              Help for information on using Reusable Settings.
  175.  
  176.           *  Pages per Sheet:  The Pages per Sheet option allows you to 
  177.              print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper. The 
  178.              multiple pages (1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 16 pages per sheet) 
  179.              appear smaller and are arranged based on the number of 
  180.              pages printed on the sheet. See the online Help for 
  181.              information on using the Pages per Sheet option.

  184.           Additional Memory
  185.           -----------------

  187.           Either an optional printer hard disk or an optional 
  188.           ROM (read-only memory) or synchronous DRAM (dynamic random-
  189.           access memory) DIMM (dual inline memory module) device 
  190.           memory can be installed in the printer. These accessories 
  191.           provide storage for fonts and macros as well as allow proof 
  192.           and print and mopying capabilities (multiple original 
  193.           prints). See the online user's guide for information on the 
  194.           printer hard disk and the optional ROM and synchronous DRAM 
  195.           DIMM device memory.

  198.           Color

  201.           HP ColorSmart II provides improved print quality, supporting 
  202.           exceptional 600-by-600 dpi color output. HP ColorSmart II
  203.           automates your printer's color controls by intelligently 
  204.           analyzing your documents, identifying the objects on each 
  205.           page, and then automatically maximizing the vibrancy and 
  206.           clarity of the printed output. See the online Help for 
  207.           information on using HP ColorSmart II.
  208.  
  209.           You can also manually specify color settings for your print 
  210.           jobs, which allows you to adjust the color control and 
  211.           halftone settings independently for printed text, graphics, 
  212.           and images.
  213.  
  214.           Black and white printing allows you to print color documents 
  215.           in varying shades of gray. Color images that are printed in 
  216.           black and white print faster and are easier to reproduce on 
  217.           black-and-white-only devices, such as copiers and fax 
  218.           machines.

  225.           Watermarks
  226.           ----------
  227.  
  228.           A watermark adds background text to a document being printed. 
  229.           For example, you can print text in the background of your 
  230.           document stating that the document is "Confidential". You can 
  231.           create your own watermarks or select from predefined 
  232.           watermarks to print with your documents, as well as edit the 
  233.           watermark text and change the font type, size, angle, color, 
  234.           and position of an existing watermark. See the online Help 
  235.           for information on using watermarks.

  343.                     II.  INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  346. ALL WINDOWS PLATFORMS

  349.      Using the Setup Software with Multilingual Versions of Windows
  350.      --------------------------------------------------------------
  351.  
  352.      When you are operating in a Windows environment, the setup 
  353.      software automatically detects the version of the operating 
  354.      system that you are using. The software is installed in the 
  355.      language that you have selected in your Windows Control Panel. 
  356.      This means that if the language preference is set to Spanish and 
  357.      you are operating an English version of Windows, the 
  358.      installation utility installs the Spanish version of the 
  359.      Windows printing system.
  360.  
  361.      If the language you select in the Windows Control Panel is not 
  362.      available in the software, the installation utility installs the 
  363.      English version of the Windows printing system.
  364.

  366. WINDOWS 3.1X
  367.  
  368.      ------------------------------------------------------------
  369.      Installing the Printer Drivers Using the Windows Add Printer 
  370.      Feature
  371.      ------------------------------------------------------------
  372.  
  373.      If you want to install the printer drivers from the printing 
  374.      system CD-ROM (CD-ROM1) or if you received ONLY a printer driver 
  375.      and its associated files (for example, through HP Electronic 
  376.      Services), complete the following steps.
  377.  
  378.      1.  Close all applications, terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) 
  379.          programs, and virus checkers. 
  380.  
  381.          After installation, you can restart these programs.
  382.  
  383.      2.  From the Program Manager, double-click the Main group.
  384.  
  385.      3.  Double-click the Print Manager icon. 
  386.          The Print Manager dialog box appears.
  387.  
  388.      4.  From the Options menu, click Printer Setup.
  389.  
  390.      5.  In the Printers dialog box, click Add.
  391.  
  392.      6.  In the List Of Printers box, click Install Or Update Printer.
  393.  
  394.      7.  Click Install. 
  395.  
  396.      8.  Insert the Windows Printing System CD-ROM (CD-ROM1). 
  397.  
  398.           Note:  If you are installing the printer drivers from disks, 
  399.                  insert Disk 1 for either the PostScript or PCL printer
  400.                  driver into the disk drive. If you are installing the 
  401.                  printer drivers from an electronic file, go to step 9.
  402.  
  403.      9.  Type or browse for one of the following paths: 
  404.  
  405.           * Adobe PostScript driver: 
  406.             \<operating system>\<language>\PS\Disk1\Oemsetup.inf
  407.  
  408.           * PCL driver: 
  409.             \<operating system>\<language>\PCL\Disk1\Oemsetup.inf
  410.  
  411.           (If you are installing the Windows printing system from disks,
  412.           locate the Oemsetup.inf file.)
  413.  
  414.           Note: You can only install one printer driver at a time. If 
  415.                 you want to install both the Adobe PostScript and PCL 
  416.                 drivers, repeat steps 3 to 11 to add the second printer 
  417.                 driver.
  418.  
  419.      10. Click OK. The computer installs the printer driver files.
  420.  
  421.      11. Make sure the driver you want to install is selected, and then 
  422.          click Connect. 
  423.  
  424.          All Windows-based applications will use the 
  425.          HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer as the default printer.
  426.  
  427.      12. In the Ports list, select the port you want to assign to the 
  428.          printer. 
  429.  
  430.           * If you select a COM port, you may need to change the 
  431.             communications settings. 
  432.  
  433.           * If you select FILE, you will be prompted for a filename 
  434.             every time you print to that printer. 
  435.  
  436.           * If you are using more than one printer, you can connect one 
  437.             printer to each of ports LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3. 
  438.  
  439.           Note: Each printer you install is assigned to the port LPT1. 
  440.                 If your printer is connected to a different port, you 
  441.                 need to change the port assignment.
  442.  
  443.      13. Provide the necessary information in the dialog box, and then 
  444.          click OK.

  525.      If you currently have an HP LaserJet printer driver installed on 
  526.      your computer system, this printing software can be safely 
  527.      installed. It can coexist with drivers for different printers. It 
  528.      replaces and updates only previous versions of the printing 
  529.      software for this printer. The new printer driver has property 
  530.      pages similar to your older printer driver, but it reflects the 
  531.      features and capabilities of the current driver.

  547.      current version of the printer drivers. New drivers have property 
  548.      pages similar to your older HP Color LaserJet printer driver, but 
  549.      provide the newest features and capabilities of the updated 
  550.      HP Color LaserJet printer driver.

  559.      Finding the Printer Driver Version Number

  562.      If you installed a printer driver that was supplied with your 
  563.      Windows operating system for the printer and you also installed 
  564.      the printing software supplied with the printer, multiple printer 
  565.      drivers might exist on your computer system. Use these steps to 
  566.      find out which drivers are installed.

  568.      1. From the Program Manager, double-click the Main group.

  570.      2. From the Main group, double-click the Print Manager icon.

  572.      3. On the Options menu, click Printer Setup.
