===================
Frequently Asked Questions (980922)
(C) 1998 by Ing. Pavel KUNCL, LAN-Projekt
mailto:winproxy@winproxy.net
General information
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: What is WinProxy?
A: WinProxy is a program which allows access to the Internet for a entire
local network and protects it as a firewall.
Q: What services WinProxy supports?
A: Above all it is WWW browsing and e-mails sorting, but WinProxy
also features FTP and Telnet gateway.
Q: What is a Firewall?
A: Firewall is a computer placed between the local area network and
the Internet. Firewalls provide protection from the open nature
of the Internet. Commonly firewalls turn off packet routing
on the host, preventing access through the IP network layer.
Attacks based on IP spoofing cannot reach the local area network.
Q: What is a IP address?
A: It is a unique address of each computer on the internet, which allows
finding of each computer and thus communication between computers via
Internet using TCP/IP protocol. It is created from four numbers divided
by dots (f.e. 195.118.31.47).
Q: What is a Intranet?
A: Intranet is a private network of computers, which comunicate as if connected
to real Internet. You can configurate it yourself. If you have less
than 255 computers you can use IP address 192.168.1.1 for first
computer (with WinProxy running), 192.168.1.2 for second one etc.
More details are in 5. chapter of Manual.
Q: What is a cache?
A: Cache is a buffer of memory. If you read any object from Internet,
it is stored to a shareable cache. When anybody wants it again, it
is loaded from the cache without connecting to the Internet. This
is better for modem users. So if WWW page is updated you get old the
version.
Q: How long does cache store objects?
A: This problem is divided into two factors. The setting of the maximal size
of cache. When cache is full the oldest objects are deleted. As second
it is Time-To-Live (TTL). After this time there are specified objects refreshed
from Internet.
Q: Who is ISP?
A: ISP is a Internet Service Provider, who above all offers connection
to the Internet using a modem and creates mail boxes and virtual domains.
Q: What is DNS?
Q: Domain Name Server (DNS) transfers DNS address (f.e. www.company.com)
to IP address (f.e. 147.2121.12.33).
WinProxy demoversion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Where can I get the latest version of Winproxy?
A: You can download free demoversion from "LAN Projekt" WWW Home Page
(http://www.winproxy.cz) or from a non FTP server
(ftp://nms.lanprojekt.cz/pub/network/winproxy/).
Q: How is the demoversion limited?
A: It supports only two concurent users, creating two mail-boxes
and maximal cache size is 1 MB.
Q: Does a time limitation exist?
A: No it doesn't and you can ask the distributor (mailto:sales@winproxy.cz)
for a trial key, that enables you the unlimited version for 20 days.
Q: Our network is very small. Must we buy full version for unlimited number
of users?
A: No you needn't. If you have modest demands, then you can buy cheaper
versions for 5 or 10 users only.
Q: This is number of users or mail-boxes?
A: Both.
Q: How is price and where can I order it?
A: Price list and more details are available on LAN Projekts WWW HomePage
(http://www.winproxy.cz) or you can mail for more information
to sales@winproxy.net.
Q: What about an upgrade?
Q: Upgrade is available between the versions of number of users. Price is
calculated as the difference of both versions plus 20%. Next versions of
the program are for free, with the same key as the one for old version.
Q: What about technical support?
A: It's available via e-mail. Questions from customers have greater priority
but all questions will be answered. You can find more details and e-mail
addresses at WWW HomePage.
WinProxy tips & tricks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: How I can configure WinProxy?
A: It is possible only via any WWW browser using URL connection to
http://<WinProxyHost>:3129/admin
Q: I need transfer whole WinProxy configuration to other computer.
A: Run program REGEDIT and export this tree [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\M&Msoft\WinProxy].
You can import this file again using REGEDIT on second computer.
Q: I use Netscape Navigator and Winproxy seems to be slow.
A: You should enable SOCKS server on Network page.
Q: How can I can use Mirabilis ICQ from all computers in LAN?
A: Follow these instructions:
- download and install WinProxy 1.4 update 2 from www.winproxy.net
- in WinProxy configuration enable
"Network / SOCKS5 server (port 1080) without authorisation"
- install ICQ and add new user
- in first ICQ window press "For Admin Use" and enter
"205.188.252.11 port 4000"
(You entered directly IP address of ICQ server instead of icq.mirabilis.com,
If it's busy you can get another IP addresses using program
PING icq.mirabilis.com)
- choose "LAN User / I am behind a firewall or proxy"
- in next window select "I am using SOCK5 proxy server"
and you can also enable "Firewall session time out after..."
- in next window enter IP address of WinProxyHost to SOCKS5 Host field
and port should remain 1080
- follow next steps as during instalation ICQ without WinProxy
(You can verify creating of UDP associations at STATUS screen
in WinProxy configuration. Unlimited version (or 20d trial key)
is recommended due creating several connections per user.)
Hardware and software
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: What operation system is needed for WinProxy?
A: WinProxy needs MS Windows 95/98 or MS Windows NT with installed TCP/IP
(Microsoft protocol). Computers can also work under Windows 3.11.
Q: Does WinProxy also work with MS Windows 98?
A: Yes.
Q: What hardware do I need?
A: Minimal hardware configuration for given OS, about 1 MB free space
on harddisk and space for cache. You need better performance of CPU
and more RAM for more users and faster connection too.
Q: Is one static IP address enough?
A: WinProxy runs on the computer that can access the Internet, so one
static IP address is required by this computer only. Other computers
access the Internet via its Intranet address that have been specified
before. In addition, if the mailbox capability is not enabled,
WinProxy will also work perfectly with a dynamic IP address.
Eletronic mail
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: What our ISP have to do if we want to receive e-mails?
A: ISP must create at least one mail-box. Ideal case is with a own virtual
domain(f.e. company.com) with arbitary number of e-mail addresses
(boss@company.com, sales@company.com). Although your mails for your
domain are stored in one mail-box on a ISP computer, WinProxy has the
ability to receive them and then sort them to several local mail-boxes,
using "To:" header.
Q: What is a POP3 and SMTP server?
A: If you aren't constantly connected to Internet then you wont recieve
mail when your computer is off-line. Therefore your ISP has a computer
(POP3 server) that is constantly connected to the Internet and when you
connect Winproxy, it gets all new messages from your mail box.
Winproxy also post all your mails to SMTP server in time of connection.
POP3 and SMTP server are mostly the same.
Modem connection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: When does WinProxy connect to the network via a modem?
A: It'll connect automaticaly, if local network cannot satisfy user demand
(Demand Dial mode) in specified time interval, (Schedule Dial mode)
or manualy via WWW interface (Manual mode).
Q: A terminal window stops WinProxy after each connection via a modem and
I must enter information manualy?
A: Your ISP doesn't support PAP or CHAP. You can dowload SCRIPT file from
ftp://ftp.lanprojekt.cz/pub/network/win95/script.zip that will help you.
