- Frequently Asked Questions
- --------------------------
-
- These are the most often asked questions about BassTour Professional. We are
- happy to help you with information about the game, but please don't consider
- us experts in Windows 95 matters. Consult your Windows 95 manuals and on-line
- help for answers to your basic Windows 95 questions.
-
- Q1: I know that the Shareware Version has limited lake access. How much of
- a typical lake does that amount to?
-
- A1: About one twenty-fifth of a typical lake is accessible by the Shareware
- version. This is still a sizable area, and tournaments can be won within
- it.
-
- Q2: Why do the colors on my screen change or look weird when I run BassTour
- Professional?
-
- A2: Some video cards or their drivers do not work well with the game. We've
- done our best to make it work with as many video systems as possible.
- You can try obtaining the newest version of the video driver for your
- card by contacting the manufacturer.
-
- Usually, this happens if your display type is set to 256 colors. We recommend
- that you use either the High Color (16 bit color) or True Color (24 bit) mode
- of your video system.
-
- Try experimenting with the display settings too, but be careful not to
- set the resolution too high for your monitor!
-
- We have seen great differences in performance between various cards as
- well.
-
- Q3: Sometimes, I see fragments of "junk" strewn about my screen. What causes
- this and what can be done about it?
-
- A3: We don't know the exact cause or we would have fixed it. We are working
- on it. At the present time, it seems to be caused by Windows interrupting
- a task that BassTour is trying to perform, and BassTour is not
- completing it. You can clear the junk from your screen by scrolling the
- screen a little, which causes the lake to be redrawn. Incidentally, some
- systems exhibit this problem more than others.
-
- Q4: BassTour Professional refuses to load one of my lakes. It displays a
- message that say's "BassTour is unable to load lake .......". What
- causes this?
-
- A4: Most often, it's caused by a corrupted lake file. These are the files
- with the extension of ".LAK". If these files are altered in any way,
- whether accidentally or intentionally, they will become unusable by the
- game. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EDIT THEM!
-
- Registered users can obtain a new copy of a bad lake file they have
- registered by contacting the author. There is a small shipping/handling
- charge for this service.
-
- Q5: Is there another way to "set the hook" besides pressing the space bar?
-
- A5: Yes. When a fish strikes, clicking either the left or right mouse button
- will set the hook.
-
- Q6: How can I reset the "big fish" or "big stringer" records so I can start
- fresh?
-
- A6: To reset the "big fish" records, delete the file BIGFISH.BTP from the
- directory where BassTour Professional is installed. To reset the
- "big stringer" records, delete the file BIGSTR.BTP from the directory
- where BassTour Professional is installed. The next time you start the
- game, it will create new, blank record files.
-
- Q7: Is there some way to make BassTour Professional use less disk space?
-
- A7: Yes. If you don't mind playing the game without sound, you can delete
- the files that have the .WAV file name extension (these are sound files)
- from the directory where BassTour Professional is installed. You can
- also delete the lake depth files (those that have the file name
- extension of .DPT). If a depth file is missing, the game will complain
- about it, but run anyway. If the game can't find a sound file, it will
- ignore it and run fine.
-
- We don't recommend deleting any files because to recover them requires
- a reinstall unless you had the foresight to save the deleted files on a
- floppy disk.
-
- Q8: What is the biggest fish I can possibly catch in the game?
-
- A8: That's top secret! However, I did catch one of about 17 pounds once.
-
- Q9: It's nearly impossible to catch a fish bigger than 8 or 10 pounds.
- How come?
-
- A9: How many REAL bass of that size have you caught? Bigger fish *CAN* be
- caught, they're just hard to come by! As in real fishing, time on the
- water, practice, and old fashioned luck play a part.
-
- Q10: Can I obtain a printed manual from you?
-
- A10: No. BassTour Professional has a full, context sensitive help system
- built into it. Just press the F1 key at any time to pop up the help
- window. You can print the pages from within the on-line help if you
- wish.
-
- Q11: Will the lakes from the original DOS versions of BassTour, BassDuel
- or Bass Class work with BassTour Professional?
-
- A11: Sorry, but no. They have a completely different file format and are
- tiny in comparison.
-
- Q12: The Fish Formula and Weigh In buttons are partially obscured. What
- can I do about that?
-
- A12: This can happen when running at lower screen resolutions, like
- 640 x 480, and trying to maximize the window size. Click the middle
- button at the right side of the title bar to see if that helps.
-
- You may also want to turn off the Full Screen At Start option on the
- preferences menu.
-
- Q13: When I display a map of the lake, it's almost all black. What happened
- to it?
-
- A13: The lake map was created when your system was operating in 256 color
- mode. To fix the problem, delete the file <lakename>.bmp where <lakename>
- is the name of the lake (like Biggie etc.). Then, set your system to
- 16 bit High Color or 24 bit True Color mode. Restart BassTour Professional
- and click the lake map button after loading the lake. A new lake map will
- be created, and should work fine.
