  24. 1. Installation
  25. ---------------

  27. You need Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 or later versions of 
  28. these operating systems to run infoHandler. 
  29.  
  30. To install mde infoHandler start 'setup.exe' which you find in the 
  31. installation archive. This program will guide you then through the 
  32. further installation process.  
  33.  
  34. Generally, it is not necessary to end other programs before installing 
  35. infoHandler. On the other hand, if you have a prior version of 
  36. infoHandler installed on your system make sure that this is not running 
  37. when you start setup of the new version, otherwise the new version 
  38. would not be installed correctly.

  40. If newer versions of system libraries have to be installed you are asked
  41. to reboot the system at the end of the setup. Reboot the system in this
  42. case before starting infoHandler.
  43.  
  44. mde infoHandler comes in two localized versions: English and German.
  45. If you are using the dual-language setup package (setup in German)
  46. you can prevent installing both by selecting custom setup and removing 
  47. all components that have the not wanted language in their description. 
  48. If you install both versions (the default) the selected version on first 
  49. start of the program depends on the global country settings of your 
  50. computer (English for all but German settings). You can change the 
  51. language independently of the global settings using 'Options' on 
  52. menu 'Extras'.

  54. After the installation is complete you'll find an entry for infoHandler 
  55. in Menu Start/Programs. Use this to start the program.

  57. 2. De-Installation
  58. ------------------

  60. If you want to undo the installation of infoHandler select 'Software' 
  61. from the system control panel. In the tab 'Install/Deinstall' select 
  62. 'infoHandler' in the list of installed programs and then click on 
  63. 'Add/Remove'. After that, all installed components are removed from 
  64. the system.

  67. 3. Description
  68. --------------------

  70. infoHandler manages your information in special databases called 
  71. 'InfoBases'. You'll create one of these infoBases for every type of 
  72. information that you want to manage. You organize the info by 
  73. assigning 'Categories' to the 'InfoRecords', manually or 
  74. automatically. These Categories are much more powerful than the 
  75. familiar keywords, often used when storing information and documents, 
  76. and their organisation is quite unusual. You organize 
  77. Categories per InfoBase in up to 16 different CategoryGroups. If you 
  78. once did introduce a new Category for new info you never again 
  79. would have to type-in that Category for other info but select it readily 
  80. from various lists as needed. So you cannot misspell it, but you can 
  81. change its identifier globally any time.

  83. The Categories and CategoryGroups come into play when you search for 
  84. interesting informmation in a voluminous infobase. By using the Categories, 
  85. you then formulate queries upon the InfoBase by making selections from 
  86. various lists and assigning logical operators to combine them. It may sound 
  87. complex, but is performed with just a few clicks of your mouse. Your 
  88. search may be narrowed further by setting constraints for various time 
  89. stamps forming part of a record. You can also assign a special time stamp, 
  90. we call it 'InfoTime', which you may use eg for appointments,  
  91. birthdays, or any other timed data.

  93. A third interesting feature of an Infobase record is a 'Reference', or link, to 
  94. an external object, such as a file or folder of the local file system, 
  95. or an Internet page. You are able to manipulate the referenced objects 
  96. from within infoHandler. infoHandler also supports "drag & drop" in 
  97. various forms. You may drag the icons of documents or URLs (Internet 
  98. addresses) onto an infoBase window, thereby creating one or more 
  99. references.

  101. 'Alarms' turn InfoRecords into events. You can link any number of
  102. alarms with any number of records. If such an alarm is raised precise 
  103. to the minute you can activate the linked record with one klick of your
  104. mouse. Alternativly you can also set 'free' alarms that are not linked
  105. to InfoRecords.

  107. The rich functionality of infoHandler is complemented by a 
  108. sophisticated graphical user interface. You may adjust this freely to 
  109. the varying demands of the diverse InfoBases and the current task. As
  110. a convenience, every InfoBase always remembers its last layout.

  114. 4. Documentation
  115. ----------------
  116.  
  117. infoHandler offers many functions for the management and organisation 
  118. of information of various types. Accordingly, the user interface is 
  119. somewhat sophisticated and perhaps a little overwhelming to the user 
  120. at first sight. But please, do not throw in the towel immediately, 
  121. try to get an overview at first!
  122.  
  123. There is no paper-back handbook but an extensive "on-line" 
  124. context-sensitive help. We tried hard to make this a really efficient 
  125. help and hope that you use it intensively.
  126.  
  127. For the beginner we wrote a couple of introducing chapters. Here you 
  128. find among other things an active screenshot of an infoHandler window 
  129. with explanations of the different parts popping up after clicking with 
  130. the button of your mouse.
  131.  
  132. Further down in the list of contents you find hints for using the 
  133. program.
  134.  
  135. Let also the "tip of the day" guide you step by step to a more efficient
  136. usage of the many possibilities of infoHandler.
  137.  
  138. Particularly informative for the novice are the added examples, which 
  139. you find in the subfolder 'Examples' of the installation folder (if you 
  140. didn't exclude them explicitly during setup). 
  141.  
  142. The first example with the file name 'Example.0..TheBasics' offers a 
  143. step by step introduction to the most important and common actions to 
  144. build simple InfoBases and should be the starting point for every 
  145. beginner. The other examples introduce more advanced features and could 
  146. be studied peu α peu later on.
  147.  
  148. The second example with the file name 'Example.1..Links' demonstrates 
  149. the use of links to various external objects. It contains 
  150. also links to the other sample InfoBases that you can load from there.
  151.  
  152. The third example with the file name 'Example.2..CD-Collection' 
  153. demonstrates an application without links but with a rich set 
  154. of 'Categories' and use of the InfoTime.
  155.  
  156. The fourth example with the file name 'Example.3..Anniversaries 
  157. demonstrates the managment of dates. Since we cannot give you an 
  158. example with your own appointments for the next days, as a substitute, 
  159. we offer these "days of remembrance".

  161. The fifth example with the file name 'Example.4..Addresses 
  162. demonstrates the automatic initializing of the text of a new InfoBase
  163. record from templates and working with TextFields in this text.

  166. 5. Hints for Using infoHandler with Screen Resolution 800 x 600 or Less
  167. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  168. Because of its rich graphical interface infoHandler should be operated 
  169. best at screen resolutions of 1024 x 768 or higher. If you want to work 
  170. at lower resolutions you should take some measures to make most of the 
  171. limited space. Here are some possibilities:
  172.  - Set the Windows Task Bar to automatically hide.
  173.  - Maximize the infoHandler main window as well as the contained 
  174.    InfoBase windows.
  175.  - Hide the tool bars and the status bar using the resp. commands 
  176.    in the menu 'View', or customize the tool bar with a few really
  177.    important buttons and drag it to some place where it is not 
  178.    in the way so much.
  179.  - Try to adjust the layout of the InfoBase Windows optimally to 
  180.    the specific task using the 'splitter bars'.
  181.  - Using command Extras/Options select 'small' for all font settings.
  182.  - If you manage dates using the 'dates control' window move this 
  183.    to the lower right corner in such a way that only those parts 
  184.    remain visible that you need frequently.

  194. 7. Known Problems
  195. -----------------
  196. Currently there is a problem if you work with very big InfoBases (more 
  197. than about 5000 records) under certain versions of Windows NT (not under
  198. Windows 98). Please read the article in he online doc about big InfoBases 
  199. if you plan to go to these order of magnitude.

  202. 8. Time-limited Evaluation, Registration and Support

  205. mde infoHandler is distributed as Shareware and not free software!
  206.  
  207. As Shareware, mde infoHandler is freely distributable You may pass on the 
  208. files of the installation package (and only these) to others. This includes
  209. distribution by mediums such as CDs.

  211. We grant everyone the 
  212. right to install this program on his or her computer and evaluate it up to 
  213. 60 days. After this period the program can be used without restrictions only 
  214. after entering a personalized serial number.
