  28. This guide contains the information you need to install our Windows 95
  29. drivers for your Hercules product.
  30.  
  31. One of the best features of Windows 95 is its adaptability to the way
  32. you work.  No matter what the task, there's probably more than one way
  33. of accomplishing it.  This is certainly true with the installation of
  34. display drivers.  There are a few ways you can go about installing the
  35. drivers, so rather than document every possible route you might choose
  36. to take, we've covered a few possible methods. No matter how you install
  37. the display drivers, Windows 95 makes it very intuitive, so it's hard
  38. to go wrong.

  40. These instructions apply to the first retail release of Windows 95.
  41. If you're still using an interim build, the procedure may go a bit
  42. differently.  As we've mentioned above, however, the intuitive Windows
  43. 95 interface makes it hard to make a mistake, so we doubt that you'll
  44. run into any problems.

  48. About This Archive

  51. The archive you've just unpacked contains the drivers for all of the
  52. products listed above.  For best results, these files should be placed
  53. in a temporary directory, such as C:\TEMP.  Once you've installed the
  54. drivers according to the instructions below, you may delete the
  55. temporary copy of the drivers (although you may want to keep a copy of
  56. the archive in case you need to reinstall the drivers).

  58. Installing Windows 95 After You've Installed Your Hercules Product
  59. ==================================================================

  61. If your Hercules card is already in your system when you install Windows
  62. 95, you have two choices: you may install the high-resolution drivers as
  63. part of the Windows 95 installation procedure, or you may wait until
  64. after Windows 95 has been installed and select our high resolution
  65. drivers using the Display Properties dialog box.  If you'd like to use
  66. this method, see "Using The Display Properties Dialog Box" below. To
  67. install our drivers as part of the Windows 95 installation procedure,
  68. specify the temporary directory in which you've unpacked the driver
  69. archive when prompted by the Hardware Installation Wizard.  Depending
  70. on the model you're installing, you may be asked to choose from a short
  71. list of drivers. See "Which driver Do I Choose?" below.  Later on, you
  72. can select your desktop area, color palette, and monitor type using the
  73. Display Properties dialog box.  See "Using The Display Properties Dialog
  74. Box" below.

  96. Installing Your Hercules Product Into a Windows 95 System

  99. If you've already installed Windows 95 on your system, installing your
  100. new Hercules card is easy.  Remove your old graphics card and install
  101. your new Hercules product according to the instructions in our
  102. Installation Guide, and then start your PC.
  103.  
  104. After Windows 95 starts, a dialog box titled "New Hardware Found" will
  105. appear, and you'll be given a few options for installing the display
  106. driver.  Choose Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer, then
  107. specify the temporary directory in which you've unpacked the driver
  108. archive.

  110. Depending on the model of you're installing, you may be asked
  111. to choose from a short list of drivers.  See "Which driver Do I Choose?"
  112. above.  Later on, you can select your desktop area, color palette, and
  113. monitor type using the Display Properties dialog box. See "Using The
  114. Display Properties Dialog Box" below.

  118. Using The Display Properties Dialog Box
  119. =======================================

  121. The Display Properties dialog box may be used for installing (or
  122. reinstalling) a display driver or monitor adapter, or choosing your
  123. desktop area (resolution), color palette (pixel depth), and system font
  124. size.
  125.  
  126. You may open this dialog box at any point within Windows 95 by
  127. clicking on the desktop with the right mouse button and selecting
  128. Properties from the pop-up menu, or by launching My Computer by double
  129. clicking its icon, selecting Control Panel, and then selecting Display.

  131. From the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings menu.  From
  132. here you may select your desktop area, color palette, and system font
  133. size.  To select a display or monitor driver, click the "Change Display
  134. Type..." button near the bottom of the dialog box.  This brings up the
  135. Change Display Type dialog box.

  137. If you'd like to install or reinstall your display driver, click the
  138. "Change..." button in the "Adapter Type" section.  This displays the
  139. Select Device dialog box.  If the driver for your Hercules product does
  140. not appear, insert our Windows Display Driver Diskette into your
  141. diskette drive, click Have Disk..., and specify the \WIN95 directory on
  142. the diskette.

  144. Depending on the model you're installing, you may be asked to
  145. choose from a short list of drivers.  See "Which driver Do I Choose?"
  146. above. Remember to click Apply when you are back on the Settings menu.

  148. You can set up the refresh rates for your product by clicking the
  149. "Change..." button in the "Monitor Type" section.  Choose your monitor model
  150. (or, if your monitor is not listed, one of the standard monitor
  151. types) from the Select Device dialog box.  The display driver will
  152. automatically use the highest refresh rate supported by your monitor and
  153. card.  It is no longer necessary to run our SETCRT.EXE utility from the
  154. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  156. NOTE: DO NOT choose a monitor model or standard monitor type that
  157. supports refresh rates that are higher than your monitor can support.
  158. If you do, you may permanently damage your monitor.  If you are unsure
  159. of what monitor model or standard monitor type to select, please refer
  160. to the documentation on your monitor or contact the manufacturer.
