  1. Introduction
  2. ============
  3. WinDown is a Windows 95 utility that shows itself in the system tray next to
  4. the clock. Right-clicking on the WinDown icon in the system tray gives a menu 
  5. for all of the Windows 95 shutdown options: [Shut down the computer], 
  6. [Restart the computer], [Restart Windows] and [Restart Windows in MS-DOS
  7. mode]. If a network is installed or user profiles is turned on, [Shut down
  8. all applications and log on as another user] will appear also. WinDown can be 
  9. configured to execute a shutdown action when its tray icon is double-clicked
  10. and to ask for confirmation before executing an action. WinDown can also use
  11. the command line to execute an action immediately.

  13. Automatic Installation
  14. ======================
  15. After you extract all files from WinDown.ZIP, right click on WinDown.INF and 
  16. choose Install. Windows will copy WinDown.EXE and WD2.EXE to your Windows 
  17. folder, WinDown.HLP and WinDown.CNT to your Windows Help folder (usually 
  18. Windows\Help) and WinDown.INF to your Windows Install Scripts folder (usually 
  19. Windows\Inf). Windows will then create a shortcut to WinDown in your Startup 
  20. folder so it will start with Windows and automatically start WinDown for you.

  22. Note: The Windows installation function can't handle directories with spaces
  23. in them. If you have unzipped WinDown to a folder with spaces in its name or
  24. path, you will receive an error message. Copy all files to a folder that 
  25. doesn't have spaces in its name or path and try again.

  27. Manual Installation
  28. ===================
  29. 1. Copy WinDown.EXE, WD2.EXE, WinDown.CNT and WinDown.HLP to the directory of
  30.    your choice.

  32. 2. Create a shortcut to WinDown.EXE in your Startup folder.

  34. You do not need WinDown.INF if you install manually. It and this file can be 
  35. erased.

  38. Uninstallation
  39. ==============
  40. If you did the automatic installation, open Add-Remove Programs from your
  41. Control Panel, choose WinDown and click Add/Remove.

  43. If you did the manual installation, delete all files for WinDown. See the 
  44. next section for changes WinDown makes to the registry so you can delete
  45. them.

  47. Registry changes
  48. ================
  49. WinDown makes the following changes to your registry the first time it is 
  50. used:

  52. 1. Creates a subkey named Eagle Software under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
  53.    and under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, if it doesn't already exist.

  55. 2. Creates a subkey named WinDown under Eagle Software in both locations.
  56.  
  57. 3. Adds values related to internal operations and settings you have made
  58.    under WinDown in both locations.

  60. No other changes are made to your registry. If you manually uninstall WinDown,
  61. you can delete both WinDown subkeys. You can delete both Eagle Software 
  62. subkeys if neither has any other subkeys besides WinDown.

  64. Using WinDown
  65. =============
  66. When WinDown starts, it will appear in the system tray (next to the clock) 
  67. as an icon of an open door. Double-clicking in WinDown's icon will execute 
  68. WinDown's default shutdown action. Right-clicking will bring up a menu of
  69. shutdown actions to choose from and changing settings for WinDown. Choosing
  70. Exit closes Windown and removes it from the tray.
