MIDI / Wave Runner - Playing MIDI and Wave Files
GENERAL INFORMATION
To use the MIDI / Wave Runner, you must enable the MIDI / Wave Runner option
in the CD-Runner Setup section. Once it is enabled, it may be accessed by
selecting the MIDI / Wave Runner icon from the main disc prompt screen or
by selecting the MIDI / Wave Runner option from the control panel or pulldown
menus.
DEFAULT MIDI / WAVE DIRECTORY
Since it is generally easier to locate and run MIDI and Wave Files when they
are grouped together in a dedicated subdirectory, the MIDI / Wave Runner
will automatically return to the last accessed subdirectory; this allows you
to create a default directory which will always appear first when selecting
MIDI and/or Wave files to be played. If you are using Windows 95, a sample
Windows directory named "Media" (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\MEDIA) contains sample MIDI
(*.mid and *.rmi files) and Wave (*.wav) files.
PLAYING MIDI and Wave Files
To play a desired MIDI or Wave file, simply click on the select file command
(or on the "Please select a file" text hotspot). A standard Windows file
selection dialog box will appear. Select the desired MIDI or Wave file;
The MIDI / Wave Runner will then display the filename (minus the path and
file extension for easier viewing) and the total playing time. You may click
the "Play" button to initiate play. You may pause the playback at any time by
pressing the "Pause" button. To resume a paused playback, simply press the
"Play" button again. You may also stop playback at any time by pressing the
"Stop" button. As each of these three buttons is pressed, they will appear
lit until they have completed their function or are manually stopped; the play
button will appear green when lit, the pause button yellow, and the stop button
red. You may also press the "Stop" button when nothing is playing to return to
the CD-ROM Runner.
Another useful feature is the status bar, which appears on the bottom right
display window. This bar is designed to serve two purposes: 1. as a time
indicator and 2. as a quick track access. The bar will always display an
approximate length relative to the elapsed time played for the MIDI or Wave
file. You may also left-click the mouse directly on the bar to move to the
approximate relative bar position in the MIDI or Wave file. For example, if
you are playing back a 6-minute long Wave file, and you click approximately
at the middle of the bar, then the MIDI / Wave Runner will immediately move
to the 3-minute point in the Wave file and resume playback. This makes
searching for key phrases or musical passages on long MIDI or Wave files much
quicker and easier.
