  35. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  36. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  37.   Welcome! You have chosen a powerful Windows image, text, and video
  38.   capture program that allows you many options. SnagIt is for any
  39.   computer user who needs to capture more than a few screens for
  40.   any purpose, such as:
  41.  
  42.   o  Capturing screens and menus in a Windows program to create
  43.      documentation.
  44.  
  45.   o  Saving a screen to send to someone else.
  46.  
  47.   o  Printing screens to help plan program design changes.

  49.   o  Saving a long window, even if it scrolls off-screen, with a
  50.      single capture instead of clipping them together.

  65.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  66.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  67.   1990.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  68.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."

  70. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  71.  
  72.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  73.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  74.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  75.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  76.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  77.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  78.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  79.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  80.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  81.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  84. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  85. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  86.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  87.  
  88.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  89.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  90.  
  91.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  92.      Windows NT 3.51 (or higher) or Windows 95 installed and
  93.      configured on your system.
  94.  
  95.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  96.  
  97.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  98.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  99.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  100.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  116. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  117.  
  118.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  119.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  120.   you'll need to use SnagIt.
  121.  
  122.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  123.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  124.  
  125.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  126.   the Help menu.
  127.  
  128.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  129.   select System Info from the Help menu.

  191. 5.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  193. 5.1 32-bit Version - SnagIt/32
  194.  
  195.     o  The full Text Capture feature is only available on Windows 95
  196.        systems.  SnagIt will only capture text from the clipboard
  197.        on Windows NT systems.
  198.  
  199.     o  The anti-aliasing feature only supports systems using
  200.        greater than 256 colors.
  201.  
  202.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  203.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  204.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  205.        configured).
  206.  
  207. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  208.  
  209.     o  Does not support any of the SnagIt/32 v3.x or v4.0 feature
  210.        additions or enhancements.
  211.  
  212.     o  Does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail clients).

  214.     o  Does not support GIF, JPEG or compressed BMP graphic file
  215.        formats.

  221. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  222. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  223. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  224.  
  225.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  226.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  227.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  228.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  229.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  230.   the following steps:
  231.  
  232.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  233.  
  234.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  235.  
  236.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  237.  
  238.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  239.  
  240.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT 3.51 users:
  241.  
  242.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  243.      from the drop down menu.
  244.  
  245.   For all users:
  246.  
  247.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  248.           a:\setup
  249.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  250.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  251.      command line above.)
  252.  
  253.   5. Click on the OK button.
  254.  
  255.   6. Follow the instructions given by the setup wizard for correct
  256.      installation of the product.
  257.

  259. 6.2  Installed Files
  260.  
  261.   The SnagIt setup program copies the following files to your
  262.   computer during installation:
  263.  
  264.   dderef.doc      SnagIt DDE command reference.
  265.   install.log     Log file used by the uninstall program.
  266.   snagit.exe      16-bit executable for Windows 3.1x.
  267.   snagit.hlp      Windows Help file for the 16-bit SnagIt.
  268.   snagit32.cnt    Windows Help contents file for the 32-bit SnagIt.
  269.   snagit32.exe    32-bit executable for Windows 95 & Windows NT.
  270.   snagit32.hlp    Windows Help file for the 32-bit SnagIt.
  271.   snagtx16.dll    SnagIt support file for text capture.
  272.   snagtx32.dll    SnagIt support file for text capture.
  273.   snagww.doc      Macro for incorporating SnagIt into Microsoft
  274.                   Word for Windows 2.0 and 6.0.

  278. 6.3  Uninstall Instructions
  279.  
  280.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  281.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  282.  
  283.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
  284.  
  285.   1. Run the Windows Control Panel
  286.  
  287.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  288.  
  289.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  290.      by Windows.
  291.  
  292.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  293.  
  294.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT 3.51
  295.  
  296.   1. In Program Manager, open the program group where you installed
  297.      SnagIt.
  298.  
  299.   2. Click on the Uninstall SnagIt icon to remove SnagIt from your
  300.      system.
  301.  
  302.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, or if you have
  303.   Windows 3.x, see the following section for uninstall instructions.
  304.

  306. 6.4  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  307.  
  308.   If you do not have Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, or encountered a
  309.   problem during the uninstall, here are the steps you can take to
  310.   manually uninstall SnagIt from your computer.
  311.  
  312.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  313.  
  314.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  315.  
  316.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  317.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  318.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  319.  
  320.   3. If you selected "Automatically run SnagIt when Windows starts"
  321.      during installation, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  322.  
  323.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  324.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  325.      you wish to delete the program item.
  326.  
  327.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  328.      installed SnagIt.  Delete all the files listed in section 6.2.
  329.  
  330.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  331.  
  332.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  333.  
  334.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  335.  
  336.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  337.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  338.      button.
  339.  
  340.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  341.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  342.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  343.  
  344.   4. If you selected "Automatically run SnagIt/32 when Windows starts"
  345.      during installation, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  346.  
  347.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  348.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  349.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  350.  
  351.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  352.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete all the files listed in section 6.2.
  353.  
  354.   For Windows NT 3.51 users:
  355.  
  356.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  357.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  358.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  359.      item.
  360.  
  361.   4. If you selected "Automatically run SnagIt/32 when Windows starts"
  362.      during installation, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  363.  
  364.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  365.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  366.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  367.  
  368.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  369.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete all the files listed in section 6.2.

  372. 7. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  373. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  374.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  375.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  376.   public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  377.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.
  378.  
  379.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  380.  
  381.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  382.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  383.   further payment.  The single-user license price is $39.95.
  384.  
  385.   When you register SnagIt Twin Pack, you have the option of
  386.   requesting a registered version of the software on diskette or of
  387.   requesting a software key to register the version you have. The
  388.   software key immediately removes all registration reminder screens.
  389.  
  390.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  391.  
  392.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  393.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single
  394.   diskette is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user
  395.   license price is $200.00.
  396.  
  397.   Registration Instructions
  398.  
  399.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  400.  
  401.   2.  Select Register SnagIt from the menu.
  402.  
  403.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  404.       information in the fields provided.
  405.  
  406.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  407.             Your software key will be personalized for that name ONLY.
  408.  
  409.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  410.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  411.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet
  412.       and your Product ID number.
  413.  
  414.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  415.       allowing you to edit and/or print the registration form.  While
  416.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
  417.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
  418.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER. Note that shipping charges are only
  419.       applicable to diskette orders.
  420.  
  421.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  422.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  423.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your diskette or
  424.       software key. It will then be sent to you by the method of
  425.       your choice, either e-mail, fax, postal delivery or other.
  426.  
  427.   If you have elected to receive a software key, use the following
  428.   steps to complete the registration process.
  429.  
  430.   7.  Select the Help->Register SnagIt menu item.
  431.  
  432.   8.  Click on the Enter Software Key button.
  433.  
  434.   9.  Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the
  435.       field provided.
  436.  
  437.   10. Press OK.
  438.  
  439.   Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder
  440.   screens will be removed.  If you have any additional questions
