  83. INSTALLATION:
  84.  
  85.                 WARNING!!! :
  86.     If you have a previous version of NYC on your system, DO NOT select
  87.     its directory as the installation path; use a new directory.  
  88.     Otherwise, you may OVERWRITE a personalized recipe database and
  89.     other important    files with the sample ones that come with the NYC archive!
  90.  
  91. Step 1. Make sure PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE are in your NYC directory, or that
  92.         you have them in a known location on your system (if not in your NYC
  93.         directory, you will need to tell NYC where they are using Options...
  94.         Preferences... PKZip/PKUnzip paths... after installation). NYC will run 
  95.         without these but NYC will not be able to create .ZIP files for you when
  96.         you Zip Cookbooks. 
  97.     
  98. Step 2. Make sure VBRUN300.DLL is in your \windows\system directory using 
  99.     Explorer or File Manager.  Now You're Cooking! will not execute without it.
  100.     
  101. Step 3. Install NYC:
  102.  
  103.     Make sure ALL other applications are closed.
  104.  
  105.     Double-click setup.exe in the list of files that were unzipped. 
  106.  
  107.     This will run the Setup program that will install Now You're Cooking!
  108.     on your hard drive under c:\NYC455 unless you select another location 
  109.     during the install. For convenience during later backups, all user
  110.     modifiable files are installed in a \user subdirectory.
  111.  
  112.                 WARNING:
  113.     DO NOT select a previous NYC directory as your install path!  If you 
  114.     want to do this, rename    the old directory first. Example: You want to
  115.     install NYC 4.55 into a directory that is named \NYC455 and you already have
  116.     a directory named \NYC455.  To avoid installing over the old one, first 
  117.     rename the existing directory (use File... Rename... in the File Manager)
  118.     to \NYC455ol and then install NYC into \NYC455.
  119.     
  120. Step 4.    Before you run NYC (---IMPORTANT---):
  121.  
  122.       Make sure your PC's date and time are set correctly using Control Panel.
  123.                 
  124.     If you are upgrading from The Grocery Consumer (NYC's predecessor),
  125.     follow these instructions:
  126.  
  127.         Upgrading from any 2.xx version of GC:
  128.         You must run GC2XTO3X.EXE to convert recipe file, category index,
  129.         and menu file to GC 3.xx format.  This will create these files in 
  130.         v3.xx format in your previous (v2.xx) directory. You will then need 
  131.         to use File... Upgrade... procedure when you first run NYC 
  132.         as follows.
  133.  
  134.         Upgrading from any 3.xx version of GC:
  135.         Go to Step 5.
  136.  
  137. Step 5.    When you run NYC for the first time (dbl-click the NYC icon):
  138.  
  139.     If you are registered and using a previous NYC 4.x or GC 3.x version:
  140.     ------------------------------------------------------

  142.     NOTE:  If you are a registered user upgrading from a version prior to
  143.     NYC 4.55, you MUST email your name and registration number to

  147.     Use NYC's File...Upgrade... to upgrade user files from your 
  148.     previous NYC directory.

  150.     If you are upgrading from GC and the version you used previously 
  151.     was GC 3.06 or earlier, make sure you check the box to upgrade 
  152.     your coupon list when you do File... Upgrade... (next step).  There
  153.     was a format change in the coupon list for GC 3.07 and higher.

  156.     If you are NOT registered and using a previous NYC version:

  158.     Register the new version (see REGISTRATION INFORMATION later in this
  159.     file, enter the registration code using Help... Register... Reg. Info
  160.     button. Then run File... Upgrade... to upgrade user files from your
  161.     old NYC directory to the new one.

  163.     NOTE:  If you wish to continue adding to your recipe database as you 
  164.     upgrade but you aren't a registered user, you may contact Gary Hauser
  165.     via internet email. I will tell you how to do this if your need is
  166.     legitimate and you intend to register in the near future.

  168.                 IMPORTANT :
  169. WARNING:  Do not attempt to use a registered key or code that does not belong
  170.       to you, or data loss could result.  Do not attempt to edit the
  171.       nyc.key file or alter it in any way, or data loss could result.

  173. Step 6. You are DONE!  Begin using Now You're Cooking! to manage your 
  174.     grocery activities.

  214. SHAREWARE CONCEPT:

  216. This software is SHAREWARE.  SHAREWARE is licensed software that you can try
  217. for free before you buy.  If you like NYC and wish to continue using it, you
  218. register it with the author.  See the ordering information below or NYC's o
  219. n-line help (Help... Register... ) on how to order by direct mail from the 
  220. author or with a credit card.

  222. This SHAREWARE program is distributed with the concept that if you find it 
  223. useful and continue to use it beyond a 60-day free trial period, you must 
  224. send in the registration fee.  See the file REGISTER.TXT for the order form, 
  225. or complete and print the form using Help...Register... from NYC's main menu.

  227. To help you evaluate the program, the shareware version of NYC is fully

  370. OVERVIEW OF Now You're Cooking!
  371.  
  372. Now You're Cooking! is a full-featured recipe organizer and database, 
  373. meal planner, shopping list maker, and grocery cost manager for Windows.  
  374. Now You're Cooking! (hereafter called NYC) is a super easy way to manage all 
  375. of these activities in one interface.  NYC is more than a recipe manager -- 
  376. it gives you the consumer power to compare the cost of your shopping list at 
  377. all your favorite stores and create shopping lists organized by store aisle. 
  378. It will even flag coupons applicable to your shopping list when you use NYCÆs 
  379. coupon manager.  
  380.  
  381. NYC makes a shopping list from a multi-day meal plan that you create by 
  382. selecting recipes (dishes) for each day's meals from any of your personalized 
  383. recipe databases (cookbooks).  You can add miscellaneous items (e.g., cat food,
  384. deodorant, toothbrush) to the shopping list, or remove items from the list that
  385. you have in stock before printing the list that you take to the store. No more 
  386. forgetting those obscure little items and wasting your time going back to the
  387. store! You can maintain as many meal plans and associated shopping lists as you
  388. like. 
  389.  
  390. You can search for recipes across cookbooks by category, text string in
  391. the recipe name, ingredients, or directions areas. You can easily add,
  392. edit, or delete recipes from multiple cookbooks (recipe databases).  
  393. Droplists are provided on the recipe editing screen to provide consistent use
  394. of ingredient names and units.  No more fumbling through boxes of paper or 
  395. cards to find a favorite recipe.  Simply select it and print it from your 
  396. recipe database.  You can rapidly expand your recipe collection by easily 
  397. converting Meal-Master (tm) recipes (literally thousands are available on
  398. the internet) to NYC cookbook format. You can assign recipes to user-defined 
  399. categories, or let NYC auto-assign categories for you.  You can fine-tune 
  400. how NYC auto-assigns recipes to categories.
  401.  
  402. You can exchange recipes with friends using NYC's recipe import and export 
  403. features.  These allow you to copy any or all of your recipes and share them 
  404. with others, or include NYC recipes they give you into your NYC cookbooks.  NYC 
  405. can also create a .ZIP recipe file (compressed recipe file) for you. This 
  406. feature provides a means for efficient backup or exchange of your cookbooks.
  407.  
  408. NYC will provide nutritional analyses for recipes and menus based on a 5635
  409. USDA nutrition database.  Users can also enter nutrition data for items not
  410. in the database.
  411.  
  412. The author of NYC has a real problem with software that requires too many 
  413. keystrokes for data entry and program navigation.  Accordingly, most data 
  414. entry screens throughout NYC are equipped with entry guessing and droplists 
  415. to minimize keystrokes during data input.  With entry guessing, you seldom 
  416. need more than a keystroke or so before NYC adds the rest, guessing the 
  417. remaining characters based on a search of existing items in the droplist.  
  418. Droplists can also be viewed at data entry and items selected with the mouse.
  419. Cut and paste operations using standard Windows techniques can be used almost 
  420. anywhere in the NYC interface.  In summary, a lot of data entry and editing
  421. power is at your fingertips with NYC.

  423. NYC uses a price list for stores that the user builds, along with extensive 
  424. use of units conversions, to handle the tough job of converting recipe-size 
  425. ingredient amounts into store-size purchase amounts.  This way NYC is able to 
  426. cost out the greatest portion of your shopping list using available price 
  427. list information.  Each item you add to a recipe or shopping list is added 
  428. to your price list automatically; you need only add the prices.  As you 
  429. improve your price list and units conversion list, NYC can use a higher and 
  430. higher portion of the shopping list to establish a shopping list cost.  In 
  431. other words, the more you use it, the smarter NYC gets.

  433. When comparing NYC features and price with other recipe/cooking/grocery 
  434. management software, we believe NYC represents the best value (i.e., features 
  435. for the price) available today for Windows - including commercial, shareware,
  436. or otherwise.  Functionality and ease of use has been emphasized in its 
  437. development, and its convenient interface has evolved via thoughtful feedback
  438. from avid users in all walks of life.  NYC is a powerful program that makes a 
  439. job we all must do very fast, efficient, and even fun.  It can cut hours off
  440. the time it takes to locate and organize your favorite recipes, plan your 
  441. menu, and create your shopping list.  And, it helps you save time 
  442. and money in grocery shopping trips.

  646. When your registration fee is received, a registration code will be 
  647. sent to you with your package (latest diskette, manual). When entered
  648. into NYC (Help... Register... Reg. Code button), it will personalize your
  649. NYC interface, remove the "unregistered" nag screens, and disable the 
  650. 60-day shutdown. Each time you install a new version of NYC, make sure 
  651. you use File... Upgrade... to upgrade your old files (including your
  652. registration key). You do not have to re-register as new versions 
  653. come out.  Simply download future versions from any of the various 
  654. sources and your registered key will work with them.
