  16. A. Introduction
  17.  
  18. FreeSpace is an innovative utility that lets you recover precious disk space 
  19. without having to uninstall any program or delete files.  FreeSpace 
  20. accomplishes this by optimizing the data stored on your disks (it 
  21. compresses files). The interesting aspect of the program is that it lets you 
  22. determine what should be compressed and occupy a minimum of disk 
  23. space and what should stay the way it currently is.  Files and programs, 
  24. which are compressed with FreeSpace, appear and work exactly the same 
  25. as if they were not compressed.

  27. FreeSpace works in Windows 95/98 (including OSR2 and FAT32 
  28. partitions) and NT 4.0 on NTFS partitions only.  FreeSpace does not 
  29. currently support native DOS (boot into DOS).  However, DOS in 
  30. Windows is supported.

  32. The hardware requirements for FreeSpace are; any personal computer capable of 
  33. running Microsoft Windows, 8MB of RAM (Windows 95/98), 16MB of RAM (Windows
  34. NT 4.0), 3MB of free disk space.

  36. B. FreeSpace Components
  37.  
  38. After running the FreeSpace SETUP program, you'll find shortcuts to the 
  39. FreeSpace components in the FreeSpace 1.0 group in your Start menu.

  41. 1. The main component of FreeSpace is a driver that is loaded when 
  42. Windows starts. This driver allows compressed files to be displayed 
  43. and accessed as if they were not compressed.  This driver is only 
  44. loaded in Windows 95/98. Under Windows NT 4.0, FreeSpace uses 
  45. the native compression capabilities of the NTFS file system.

  47. 2. The FreeSpace Manager includes the QuickSpace Wizard, 
  48. Compression Wizard, Decompression Wizard, FreeSpace Settings, 
  49. FreeSpace Disk Checkup, and EasyUpdate.
  50.  
  51. 3. The Compression Wizard helps you find files and folders on your 
  52. system which are excellent candidates for compression either because 
  53. they have not been accessed for a long time, or because they compress 
  54. extremely well, or because they will save you a lot of space if 
  55. compressed.

  57. 4. The Decompression Wizard helps you find compressed items on your 
  58. system and lets you uncompress them.
  59.  
  60. 5. The FreeSpace Analyzer lets you analyze your drives and displays 
  61. folder size information. It is a great tool to help you better understand 
  62. what components are taking a lot of space on your system and to find 
  63. out what space they would occupy if compressed.

  65. 6. FreeSpace also provides context menus (Compress and Decompress) 
  66. which let you compress or uncompress files and folders you select in 
  67. Explorer.  Another context menu (Folder Checkup) lets you perform a 
  68. checkup of the current folder to verify that all the compressed items 
  69. are in good shape (Windows95 only). Finally, you'll also find a menu 
  70. (Convert Zip to FreeSpace) which lets you convert a Zip archive into a 
  71. FreeSpace compressed folder.

  73. 7. The Properties dialog of files and folders has an additional tab labeled 
  74. FreeSpace that displays statistics about the selected files and folders.

  76. C. Uninstalling FreeSpace
  77.  
  78. If FreeSpace is incompatible with something on your system or if you wish 
  79. to uninstall FreeSpace for some other reason, you can run the included 
  80. Uninstall program.  You can do this from the "Add/Remove Programs" 
  81. control panel applet or by running the "Uninstall FreeSpace" program from 
  82. the FreeSpace group in the Start Menu.

  84. IMPORTANT: If while using FreeSpace you have compressed some files 
  85. or folders, you may want to uncompress them, since you will not have 
  86. access to them without FreeSpace running.
