When worked on Russian resources file for the LotRMap
we used some principles as follows.
1) If Tolkien gives several names for the same place then each name enters the file
through separate line - to make a user easy to find it out in alphabetical ordering.
2) If a place has more than one name then each entry for it in the file
refers to two of them. For example, "Chernorech'e or Azanulbizar
(valley, Dimrill Dale)", "Azanulbizar or Nanduhirion", "Nanduhirion or
Chernorech'e".
3) For each Russian name its English original is given in parenthesis.
This is necessary if any questions will arise.
4) As a main source for Russian translations of Tolkien's toponims we used
Lord of the Rings translated by V. Muravjov since his work is both
accurate and artistic. English texts of Lord of the Rings, Hobbit,
Unfinished Tales and Russian translation of Hobbit by N. Rakhmanova
we referred to as well. Additionally a few toponims were included
from the translation of LotR by N. Grigor'eva and V. Grushetsky.
5) Since one have to use in the LotRMap some cyrillic font
to view a russian text properly, all the accented letters
in English toponims were substituted by corresponding
non-accented ones. So in "Barad-Dur" a circumflex must actually
stand instead of u; but keeping the circumflex results in
"Barad-D√r" when using the cyrillic font.
