  12. It is assumed if you are reading this then you have already read the
  13. generic install guide (INSTALL.TXT) and done necessary preparation work.

  16. I.  BOOT DISK OPTIONS
  17.  
  18.  When you first boot with the floppy you are asked to choose the
  19.  installation mode.  MINI installs will only prompt you for the
  20.  BASE installation set, whereas FULL install will also provide
  21.  an opportunity to install the rest of the installation sets.
  22.  If your computer monitor supports color, then select the options
  23.  with COLOR, otherwise choose the MONOCHROME choices.  Note: the
  24.  MONOCHROME modes simply activate monochrome support in included
  25.  programs (if available).
  26.  
  27.  If you wish to perform the installation steps manually, select
  28.  option 3, Clean Boot from the menu.  This will skip all installation
  29.  steps, but still provides access to necessary utilites (FDISK,
  30.  FORMAT, SYS, ...).
  31.  
  32.  Primarily for testing purposes, you may also have the option to
  33.  use the Fat32 enabled kernel.  The Fat32 enabled kernel may be
  34.  compiled with 80386 specific instructions, so its use is only
  35.  suggested for newer computers (where Fat32 support is more likely
  36.  to be desired anyway).  Options 5 & 6 replace the file KERNEL.SYS
  37.  on the floppy with the indicated kernel.  This requires the
  38.  ability to write to the floppy, so please be sure the write
  39.  protect notch is set to allow writing before attempting.

  42. II.  LANGUAGE SELECTION
  43.  
  44.  Note: The steps below may differ slightly depending on which
  45.  boot disk you use and which options you select.
  46.  
  47.  After selecting MINI/FULL and COLOR/MONOCHROME mode, you will
  48.  be prompted for a language to use during installation.  Not
  49.  all text has been translated and very few languages are supported.
  50.  English is the original language, so all untranslated text will
  51.  still be in English.  Press the key corresponding to the language
  52.  desired, or press '0' for default English text.  This option
  53.  simply sets the LANG environment variable, which is used
  54.  throughout the installation floppy in an attempt to display
  55.  localized messages.

  57.  
  58. III.  VARIOUS MESSAGES
  59.  
  60.  At this point, the installation will display some general
  61.  messages about FreeDOS or this particular installation.
  62.  Press the ESC key to continue after reading the various
  63.  messages.  (Longer documents are displayed using pg, you
  64.  will see PG filename on the top line.  This allows you to
  65.  scroll using the arrow keys.)  Please read, or at least
  66.  glance at them.

  69. IV.  KEYBOARD LAYOUT
  70.  
  71.  Because not everyone will be using a US keyboard, if you are
  72.  using an AT class 286 or higher computer then you will be provided
  73.  a chance to run XKEYB with one of the supported keyboard layouts.
  74.  If you are using a US keyboard, or do not wish to install XKEYB,
  75.  then you may press '0' to skip loading XKEYB, otherwise press
  76.  the key corresponding to the desired layout.

  79. V.  PARTITION PREPARATION
  80.  
  81.  Currently when running in monochrome mode, you will be prompted
  82.  to run the various programs in a manner similar to described below
  83.  in the 'MANUAL INSTALL FROM FLOPPY DISK' section.  Otherwise the
  84.  Partition Management tool will be run, which allows you more
  85.  flexibility as to which drive a particular program uses and which
  86.  program to execute.
  87.  
  88.  In general you will will want to:
  89.    1.  Create the partition, use either FDISK, Ranish Partition
  90.        Manager, or you can split an existing parition using FIPS.
  91.        Do this step only if you need to create a new partition,
  92.        you may of course use an existing partition if it is
  93.        supported by DOS.
  94.        WARNING!!! Be careful and make sure you have backed up all
  95.                   important data before proceeding.  We are not
  96.                   responsible for loss of data or other problems
  97.                   resulting from use of these programs.
  98.        Don't forget, if you are using the Fat32 enabled kernel,
  99.        and decide to create a Fat32 partition, FORMAT does not
  100.        yet support Fat32, so you will need another method to
  101.        format (initialize) it.  
  102.        Reboot and proceed to step 2.
  103.  
  104.    2.  Initialize the partition using Format.
  105.        Before a partition may be used by DOS, various bits of
  106.        information must be written to it.  The format program will
  107.        do this for you.  Some programs such as PowerQuest's
  108.        Partition Magic will do this when creating the partition,
  109.        so when using such programs you may skip this step.
  110.        Do this step only if you just created a partition (step 1)
  111.        or you wish to wipe clean an existing partition.
  112.        WARNING!!! All data on the formated drive will be lost!
  113.                   Make sure the highlighted partition (drive) is
  114.                   the one you wish to format.
  115.  
  116.    3.  Install System files ( run SYS <drive> ).
  117.        This is an important step if you wish to have FreeDOS boot
  118.        from your hard drive.  However, you are not forced to do this
  119.        as you may not want to overwrite an existing operating system
  120.        (i.e. just boot from floppy disk) or you may need to do this to
  121.        a drive that is not displayed.
  122.        WARNING!!! This will overwrite any existing operating system's
  123.                   boot record and thus make that OS no longer
  124.                   bootable.  This does not overwrite the MBR (Master
  125.                   Boot Record), so multiboot loaders should be ok.
  126.                   Make sure the highlighted partition (drive) is
  127.                   the one you wish to install system files to.
  128.  
  129.  Once your partitions are successfully initialized, press the Enter
  130.  key to continue or you may abort the installation by pressing the
  131.  ESC key.  Remember, the FreeDOS system files are not installed to
  132.  your hard drive ( e.g. SYS C: ) unless you explicitly choose the
  133.  Install SYStem files option.

  136. VI.  THE INSTALL PROGRAM
  137.  
  138.  When the install program asks where you will install from (where the
  139.  install files are located) enter:
  140.  
  141.      A:\
  142.  
  143.  Or if you have extracted all the installation sets to a single
  144.  directory on your hard drive, specify the full path and drive to it.
  145.  
  146.  The install program will then ask you where to install FreeDOS.  Most
  147.  people will use C:\DOS or C:\FDOS. 
  148.  
  149.  Install will also prompt you to determine which optional components
  150.  to install.  Once install has finished you should edit the sample
  151.  configuration files (config.sys & autoexec.bat) to correct the paths
  152.  (only necessary if you did not install to C:\FDOS) and copy them to
  153.  the root directory.  Replace FDOS in the steps below with the actual
  154.  location you specified in the step above.

  156.  To copy the files to the root directory type:
  157.      COPY C:\FDOS\CONFIG.SYS C:\
  158.      COPY C:\FDOS\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\
  159.  
  160.  To edit the files, put the boot disk back into the drive and type:
  161.      TE
  162.  When the editor starts, go to File menu, select Open, and in the
  163.  filename entry field type C:\CONFIG.SYS, followed by pressing Enter.
  164.  Then repeat, but use  C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT instead.  Don't forget
  165.  to save your changes when done (File --> Save).

  168. VII.  POST INSTALL STEPS
  169.  
  170.  At this point all the basic FreeDOS installation steps should be done.
  171.  If you wish to use English and a US keyboard then go ahead
  172.  and reboot now.  If everything goes alright then FreeDOS is
  173.  installed.  If you wish to continue using your specified keyboard
  174.  layout or a desired language (when supported by individual programs),
  175.  edit C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT (the one you just copied to C:\).  If it dos
  176.  not exist, then create it.  The first line should be
  177.      @ECHO OFF
  178.  otherwise all commands will be displayed.  Somewhere in the file
  179.  make sure the following two lines appear (they need not be together)
  180.      SET LANG=EN
  181.      XKEYB US
  182.  but replace EN with appropriate 2 letter language id (e.g. ES for
  183.  Spanish) and US with appropriate keyboard layout name.
  184.  Reboot and if all goes well then FreeDOS will be using your desired
  185.  keyboard layout and if possible, to some extent desired language.

  188. VIII.  MANUAL INSTALL FROM FLOPPY DISK
  189.  
  190.  Note: For many cases the boot disk will prompt you for all necessary
  191.  information and perform the required steps, however, some may need
  192.  to manually do the steps as outlined below.  Choose option 4, clean
  193.  boot if you are using the installation boot disk.
  194.  
  195.  Now you are ready to install the FreeDOS distribution on your
  196.  computer. If you have made all your floppies correctly, then you
  197.  reboot your computer using the install boot floppy.
  198.  
  199.  When your computer boots up (may take a minute or two, depending on
  200.  the speed of your PC) you will be taken through the setup process.
  201.  
  202.  At this point, you have the opportunity to run FDISK to create a 
  203.  DOS partition IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE ONE.  To run FDISK, just type:
  204.  
  205.      FDISK
  206.  
  207.  Then follow the on-screen prompts to create a new partition and mark
  208.  it as the active primary partition.  After you run FDISK, you will
  209.  need to reboot.  Just boot off the install boot floppy again.
  210.  
  211.  IF YOU CREATED A NEW PARTITION for FreeDOS, you'll also need to
  212.  format the partition before you can use it.  To do that, just type:
  213.  
  214.      FORMAT C:
  215.  
  216.  Don't forget to make the C: drive bootable with FreeDOS.  Just type:
  217.  
  218.      SYS C:
  219.  
  220.  After that, run the install program:
  221.  
  222.      INSTALL
  223.  
  224.  See above section 'THE INSTALL PROGRAM' for more information.
  225.  When returned to the command prompt, do any other steps desired and
  226.  when done, reboot!
