  3. TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) installation notes
  4.  
  5. IMPORTANT NOTES:
  6. - Starting with Camtasia Player 2.0, the Camtasia Player will play AVI files
  7. which use the TSCC codec, even if the TSCC codec is not installed on the
  8. system.  This gives you the option of distributing Camtasia Player 2.0 or
  9. later instead of distributing the TSCC codec.  The Camtasia Player is a small,
  10. self-contained EXE designed to ensure high quality playback of AVI files.  You
  11. may freely distribute the Camtasia Player.
  12.  
  13. - If your AVI files use the TSCC codec, and you do not wish to use Camtasia
  14. Player 2.0 (or later version), then you will need to distribute the TSCC codec
  15. in order for others to be able to view your video.
  16.  
  17. - Windows NT/2000/XP users must have administrator rights to install codecs.
  18. If you are distributing AVIs which use the TSCC codec and your users may not
  19. have administrator rights on these operating systems, then you have a
  20. few options:
  21. 1. Distribute the Camtasia Player 2.0 or later as mentioned above.
  22. 2. Use Camtasia Studio to convert your AVIs to Macromedia Flash SWF files.
  23. 3. Use Camtasia Studio to convert your AVIs to WMV files using the Windows
  24. Media Screen codec which is installed with current versions of Windows Media
  25. Player.
  26. 4. Use Camtasia Studio to convert your AVIs to use another video codec,
  27. for example the "Microsoft Video 1" codec.

  35. TSCC Installation with the TSCC.exe codec installer
  36.  
  37. The TSCC.exe is an install program that you can use to distribute the TSCC
  38. codec.  It can be found in your Camtasia Studio installation directory.  The
  39. TSCC.exe installer performs the following checks:
  40.  
  41. - Checks for tsccvid.dll in the Windows system directory
  42. - Checks that the tsccvid.dll is the most current version
  43. - Checks that the appropriate registry entries are correct
  44.  
  45. These checks happen very quickly.  If the installer finds that the codec is
  46. already correctly installed, then it exits immediately.  If one of these tests
  47. is not passed, then the installer will correctly install the codec.  The codec
  48. installer needs to be run only once to install the codec.  However, because of
  49. the checking at startup, there is no harm if it runs multiple times.

  51. The TSCC.exe codec installer includes a /s "Silent Install" command line
  52. option.  This will run the installer silently without prompting the user.

  57. TSCC Installation by Internet Explorer Component Download

  59. NOTE: Netscape browsers do not support this method.

  61. One common method of distributing multimedia components is via the component
  62. download capability of Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 3.02 or higher).
  63. This method can be used to install the TechSmith Screen Capture Codec on
  64. target systems through an HTML page.  The file required for this is
  65. TSCCINST.CAB, located in your Camtasia Studio install directory.  Simply add
  66. the HTML snippet below to the desired page and modify the CODEBASE attribute
  67. if necessary.

  75. The code above will reference the codec installer from the TechSmith web
  76. site.  You may place TSCCINST.CAB on your own web server and change the
  77. CODEBASE location accordingly to allow for faster installation (i.e. in an
  78. intranet environment).  See the following URL for detailed information about

  82. NOTE: You must ensure that the codec installer completes before any
  83. TSCC-encoded media is referenced for playback.  If this is not done the media
  84. may not show any video on the web page.  It works best to embed the Windows
  85. Media Player directly via an OBJECT tag following the OBJECT tag for the codec
  86. installer.  This ensures correct sequencing.  If the player is referenced
  87. indirectly via a MIME type in an EMBED tag, IE will not wait for the codec
  88. install to complete before attempting to play the media.

  90. When testing the codec installer on your web page, you may want to remove the
  91. TSCC install ActiveX control and the TSCC codec after it has been installed.
  92. To remove the TSCC installer ActiveX control, select the "Downloaded Program
  93. Files" folder in the Windows system folder (e.g. C:\Windows\Downloaded Program
  94. Files) using Windows Explorer.  Then select "TSCCInstallClass" and choose
  95. "File->Remove Program File" in Windows Explorer.  To remove the TSCC codec,
  96. use the Control Panel "Multimedia" applet to remove the codec from the list
  97. of Video Compression Codecs and then remove the file "tsccvid.dll" from the
  98. Windows system folder (e.g. "C:\Windows\System" on Windows 9x,
  99. "C:\Winnt\System32" on Windows NT/2000).
