  27. Media Players have become large complicated applications that depend
  28. on the latest Windows features (e.g. the current version of DirectX).
  29. The common Media Players have also become a battleground for streaming
  30. formats, entertainment portals, advertising, etc.  These players tend
  31. to be optimized for entertainment content and are often simply not
  32. appropriate for playing screen recordings.  Camtasia Player is
  33. designed to guarantee simple high quality playback of your Camtasia
  34. Studio videos.
  35.  
  36. Camtasia Player is a simple, standalone video player, optimized for
  37. playing screen recordings.  Camtasia Player always plays movies at
  38. 100% of their original size so that they remain readable.  It runs
  39. on any 32-bit Windows platform, with no dependencies on runtime
  40. libraries, OS version, or DirectX.  The Player is a single .EXE file
  41. that does not need any setup, nor does it use the registry or any
  42. configuration files.  Camtasia Player is designed to be as easy to
  43. use as possible to avoid support issues.  Command line options are
  44. provided which allow Camtasia Player to be invoked in various ways
  45. from CD-ROMs, multimedia authoring tools, and scripting languages or
  46. batch files.  The command line options are listed below in the "How
  47. to Use Camtasia Player" section.
  48.  
  49. Camtasia Player only plays AVI video files.  Beginning with v2.0,
  50. Camtasia Player has built-in support for the TechSmith Screen Capture
  51. Codec (TSCC).  This means that an AVI encoded with the TSCC codec
  52. will always play in the Camtasia Player, even if the TSCC codec is
  53. not installed on the system.  Any other audio or video codecs
  54. required by the AVI file must be installed before Camtasia Player can
  55. play the movie. Camtasia Player does not setup any shell associations
  56. to become the default AVI player.  However, this could be setup by an
  57. install program that you provide, or by an end user.

  60. license agreement and about redistribution of Camtasia Player
  61. (CAMPLAY.EXE) with your Camtasia movies.

  65. 2.  System Requirements
  66. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  67. In order to run Camtasia Player, your system must meet these
  68. specifications:
  69.  
  70. o  Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4, 2000, XP or later version
  71. o  Windows-compatible sound card and speakers (recommended)
  72. o  About 360 KB of hard-disk space for program installation
  73. o  Any audio or video codecs required by your AVI files must be
  74.    installed in order to play the AVIs.

  76.    ** Note: Beginning with v2.0, Camtasia Player can play AVIs encoded
  77.    with the TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC), even if the TSCC
  78.    codec is not installed on the system.  However, you may still wish
  79.    to install the TSCC codec so that the AVIs will play in other media
  80.    players.  You can freely distribute and install the TSCC video
  81.    codec using the TSCC.EXE codec installer, included with Camtasia
  82.    Studio.

  85. 3.  Setup and Configuration

  87. 3.1 Installation Instructions
  88.  
  89.     The Camtasia Player distribution file contains the following
  90.     files.
  91.  
  92.        CAMPLAY.EXE          Camtasia Player executable
  93.        CAMPLAYLICENSE.TXT   Software license description
  94.        CAMPLAY.TXT          This file
  95.  
  96.     To install Camtasia Player, simply unzip the contents of
  97.     the distribution file to a new folder.
  98.  
  99. 3.2 Uninstall Instructions
  100.  
  101.     To uninstall Camtasia Player, simply delete the files listed
  102.     above from your computer.

  104. 3.3 How to make Camtasia Player your default AVI player
  105.  
  106.     On Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP or later:
  107.     1.  Right click on an AVI in Windows Explorer.
  108.     2.  Choose "Open With..."
  109.     3.  Click the "Other..." button.
  110.     4.  Navigate to and select "CamPlay.exe"
  111.         (e.g. C:\Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\CamPlay.exe).
  112.     5.  Check the "Always use this program to open these files"
  113.         in the "Open With" dialog and then click OK.
  114.  
  115.     On Windows 95, 98, and Windows NT 4:
  116.     1.  In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the View menu,
  117.         and then click Options.
  118.     2.  Click the "File Types" tab (or the "Folder Options" tab on
  119.         Windows 98).
  120.     3.  In the list of file types, select the file type for the
  121.         .AVI file extension (e.g. "Video Clip" or "Movie Clip (AVI)").
  122.         The settings for that file type are shown in the File Type
  123.         Details box.
  124.     4.  Click Edit.
  125.     5.  In the Actions box, select Open.
  126.     6.  Click Edit.  You may want to note the current setting, in case
  127.         you want to restore it.  Then specify the full pathname for
  128.         Camtasia Player followed by "/open"
  129.         (e.g. "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\CamPlay.exe" /open)
  130.         and click OK.
  131.     7.  In the Actions box, select Play.
  132.     8.  Click Edit.  You may want to note the current setting, in case
  133.         you want to restore it.  Then specify the full pathname for
  134.         Camtasia Player followed by "/play"
  135.         (e.g. "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\CamPlay.exe" /play)

  140. 4.  How to use Camtasia Player

  143. 4.1 Command Line Parameters
  144.  
  145.     When you launch Camtasia Player, by default it has a title bar,
  146.     a menu bar, a tool bar, a status bar.  You can customize those
  147.     elements by specifying arguments on the command line when
  148.     launching Camtasia Player.  Here is the exact syntax for the
  149.     command line arguments:
  150.  
  151.        CAMPLAY [<options>] [<file>]
  152.  
  153.     where <file> is an optional movie file name and <options> is an
  154.     optional set of options among the following:
  155.  
  156.     /A    - Launches with "Always on top" option
  157.     /BC RGB(255,0,255) - Set background color, default is black
  158.     /D    - Launches without allowing "Dragging" by the movie area
  159.     /E    - Exits after playing the movie
  160.     /F    - Launches in Full Screen Mode
  161.     /M    - Launches without a menu bar
  162.     /MX   - Launches with its window maximized
  163.     /open - Open the specified movie (<file>) but does not play it
  164.     /play - Immediately play the specified movie (<file>) [default]
  165.     /R    - Repeats the movie forever
  166.     /S    - Launches without a status bar
  167.     /ST   - Stay on last frame after playing
  168.     /T    - Launches without a title bar
  169.     /TB   - Launches without a tool bar
  170.  
  171.     Notes:
  172.     - For the /BC background color, you must supply a color argument
  173.       with the syntax RGB(r,g,b) where r, g, and b are the red, green
  174.       and blue components of the color.  Valid values for r, g, and b
  175.       are in the range 0 to 255.  For example:
  176.          RGB(0,0,0)        =  black
  177.          RGB(255,255,255)  =  white
  178.          RGB(0,0,255)      =  blue
  179.          RGB(128,128,128)  =  dark gray
  180.       The background color shows only when the movie that is playing
  181.       does not fill the entire frame.  For example, if the player is
  182.       maximized while a 360x240 movie is playing, the background color
  183.       will show.

  185.     Examples:
  186.     CAMPLAY "clip1.avi"
  187.     - play "clip1.avi" with the default user interface
  188.  
  189.     CAMPLAY /E /F "my movie.avi"
  190.     - play "my movie.avi" full screen and exit after playing
  191.  
  192.     CAMPLAY /M "clip2.avi"
  193.     - open "clip2.avi" without a menu bar (i.e. no File>Open menu
  194.       option)
  195.  
  196.     CAMPLAY /BC RGB(128,128,128) /F "clip3.avi"
  197.     - play "clip3.avi" full screen and fill the background with dark
  198.       gray if the movie does not fill the entire screen.

  224.           which specifies the red, green, and blue components that
  225.           make up the the background color.  Valid values for the red,
  226.           green, and blue components are in the range 0 to 255.  The
  227.           background color only shows when the movie is not big enough
  228.           to fill the frame.

  230.           Added volume controls to the player.

  232.           Improved seeking performance.  You can now seek while the
  233.           movie is playing.  You can now click anywhere on the slider
  234.           to jump to that point in the movie.  You can also use the
  235.           left and right arrow keys for frame by frame navigation.

  237.   v1.0.4  Added /A "Always on top" option to keep player on top of
  238.           other windows.  The Play>Always on top option only appears
  239.           if the /A command line option is used.

  241.           The player can now be moved around the screen by a click-n-
  242.           drag inside the movie playback area. No dragging is allowed
  243.           when the player is maximized or when in fullscreen mode. For
  244.           backward compatibility, the /D option was added to disable
  245.           this "Dragging" behavior in case it is not desired.

  247.           Added Exit toolbar button when the player is run with no
  248.           menu (/M) and with no title bar (/T) to make it easier to
  249.           close the player.
