eMoviX is a package that allows you to create bootable CDs able to boot & autoplay your multimedia files. It is intended mainly to play video files but if you want it can be used to play also audio files. I plan to release eventually a distro similar to eMoviX but aimed at audio only, so stay tuned!
The philosophy behind eMoviX is to make possible to generate video/audio CDs that are self-sufficient, i.e. that you can play on every PC regardless of what is installed on it: just insert the eMoviX CD inside a CD/DVD-ROM and boot the PC from there!
I had this idea after trying without luck to play some movie of mine on my father's laptop. Unfortunately he uses M$ window$ and I just couldn't make subtitles work with it, while they work perfectly fine with Arpi's mplayer, simply the best video player for Linux.
Of course installing Linux on my father's laptop was not an option, so I decided trying to make a bootable CD able to play itself, so to meet this problem no more.
Incredibly enough, the idea worked :-)
Credits for this go to me only for a little part. The real credits must be given to the following packages:
syslinux v2.00 that makes the CD bootable;
mplayer v0.90rc3 that plays the files;
slackware v8.0 from which I learned the littel I know of Linux administration;
linux kernel v2.4.20 no comments needed here :-)
Video Formats Supported
The world of video formats is a big mess, so it is not trivial for me to tell exactly which files will be played by eMoviX.
First of all, let me point out that eMoviX uses mplayer to display videos and therefore eMoviX works with a subset of the formats supported by mplayer, that you can find in the mplayer's info page.
Apart from that, these formats are reported to work fine with MoviX:
avi files - in particular -->DivX<-- files; mpeg files; VCD files.
The following formats should work:
QuickTIme files; wmv files; asf files; fli files.
If you try them please let me know whether you had success or not.
Audio Formats Supported
MPlayer is able to play also audio files, even if it is not the best tool for this aim. eMoviX version of mplayer has been compiled with support for the following formats:
