  6.    Version 3.40 beta 1
  7.  
  8.    1. "Fastest" (-m1) RAR compression method has been modified
  9.       to provide much higher compression speed and lower ratio.
  10.       It may be useful for tasks requiring the high speed like
  11.       regular backups.
  12.  
  13.       You may increase "Fastest" speed even more selecting 64KB
  14.       compression dictionary instead of default 4MB.
  15.  
  16.    2. WinRAR is able to decompress archives created by Unix 'compress'
  17.       tool (.Z files). Like GZIP and BZIP2 archives, WinRAR opens
  18.       tar.Z and .taz files in one step, so users do not need to
  19.       unpack .tar manually.
  20.  
  21.    3. WinRAR is able to decompress archives created by 7-Zip
  22.       (.7z files). "Find" command is not supported for this
  23.       archive type.
  24.  
  25.    4. New "Security" dialog in WinRAR settings:
  26.  
  27.       a) "File types to exclude from extracting" option to prevent
  28.          extracting of potentially dangerous files like .exe, .scr
  29.          and .pif;
  30.  
  31.       b) "Propose to select virus scanner" option modifies behavior
  32.          of "Scan archive for viruses" command. You may turn it off
  33.          if you wish to skip the virus scanner selection dialog.

  35.    5. New command line switch -ep3 allows to save and restore
  36.       full file paths including the drive letter.
  37.  
  38.       WinRAR shell equivalent of -ep3 switch are options
  39.       "Store full paths including drive letter" in "Files/File paths"
  40.       page of archiving dialog and "Extract absolute paths"
  41.       in "Advanced/File paths" page of extracting dialog.

  43.    6. You may select and compress disks directly in "My Computer"
  44.       view in WinRAR shell. Just choose "My Computer" in WinRAR
  45.       address bar, select disks to compress and press "Add".
  46.       If you selected more than one item, WinRAR will automatically
  47.       set "Store full paths including drive letter" archiving mode.
  48.  
  49.    7. If you selected several disks in Windows Explorer "My Computer"
  50.       view and started archiving from context menu, WinRAR will
  51.       automatically set "Store full paths including drive letter" mode
  52.       when compressing them.
  53.  
  54.    8. New command line switch -oc to restore NTFS "Compressed" attribute
  55.       when extracting files. RAR always saves "Compressed" attribute
  56.       when creating an archive, but does not restore it unless -oc switch
  57.       has been specified.

  59.       WinRAR shell equivalent of -oc switch is "Set attribute Compressed"
  60.       option in "Advanced" part of extracting dialog.
  61.  
  62.    9. Starting from this version RAR volumes contain the volume number
  63.       field.
  64.  
  65.       If archive was created by WinRAR 3.40 or newer, you may view
  66.       the volume number in the top line of "Info" dialog and
  67.       in the address bar.
  68.  
  69.       In the command line mode the volume number is displayed
  70.       by 'L' and 'V' commands in the line with the total volume
  71.       information.
  72.  
  73.       This feature may be useful if original volume names are lost
  74.       and you need to rename volumes to correct names.

  76.   10. Commands 'L' and 'V' display NTFS "Compressed" attribute
  77.       in archive listing.
  78.  
  79.   11. Switch -ag may include an optional text enclosed in '{' and '}'
  80.       characters. This text is inserted into archive name.
  81.       For example: -agHH{hours}MM{minutes}
  82.  
  83.       Same feature is supported in "Generate archive name by mask"
  84.       field of WinRAR archiving dialog.
  85.  
  86.   12. If switch -ac is specified, RAR will not reset "Archive"
  87.       attribute of those files, which size or modification time
  88.       was changed after starting the archiving operation.
  89.  
  90.       So files modified after placing them to archive and before
  91.       clearing "Archive" attribute, will be included to next incremental
  92.       backup. The same is true for WinRAR "Clear attribute "Archive"
  93.       after compressing" GUI option.

  95.   13. If you use "Add to favorites" command inside of archive
  96.       subfolder, WinRAR will save the subfolder and restore it
  97.       when accessing to this favorite item. Previous versions
  98.       were able to restore only the root archive folder.
  99.  
  100.   14. When editing archived files, WinRAR proposes to update them
  101.       immediately after detecting that file was changed. Previous
  102.       versions waited until an external editor terminates before
  103.       updating a changed file.
  104.  
  105.   15. If you drop an archive to WinRAR address bar or toolbar,
  106.       WinRAR will display its contents even if other archive
  107.       is opened now. Previous versions proposed to add a dropped
  108.       archive to browsing one.
  109.  
  110.       You may still drop an archive to WinRAR file list if you
  111.       need to add it to browsing archive.

  113.   16. Corrected processing of corrupt LZH archives to exclude
  114.       a possible crash when reading corrupt LZH file headers.

  119.    1. New "Scan archive for viruses" command unpacks an archive to
  120.       temporary folder and checks its contents with antivirus software
  121.       installed on a user's computer.
  122.  
  123.    2. New "Generate report" command creates a report containing
  124.       the list of usual or archived files. You may optionally include
  125.       a file size, date and CRC to report, choose the sort order,
  126.       save report to file, send it to printer or copy to clipboard.

  128.    3. New "Benchmark and hardware test" command allows to compare
  129.       performance of RAR compression algorithm on different computers
  130.       and detect possible errors caused by hardware failures.
  131.  
  132.    4. New "Print file" command is able to print both archived
  133.       and usual files.

  135.    5. New "Tools" menu contains "Wizard", "Show information",
  136.       "Convert archives", "Find files", "Repair", "Convert to SFX"
  137.       commands previously available in "Commands" menu and new
  138.       "Scan archive for viruses", "Generate report", "Benchmark
  139.       and hardware test" commands.

  141.    6. WinRAR supports decompression of ZIP archives created using
  142.       "Enhanced deflate" method.

  144.    7. WinRAR pre-allocates disk space for files unpacked
  145.       from ZIP archives. It helps to reduce disk fragmentation,
  146.       especially on NTFS disks. Previous versions did it only
  147.       for RAR archives.
  148.  
  149.    8. Now it is possible to decompress TAR, GZIP and ISO9660
  150.       archives of any size. Previous versions could not handle
  151.       files of these formats, if they exceeded 2 GB.

  153.    9. Status bar displays the current operation progress,
  154.       when reading contents of large tar.gz and tar.bz2 archives.
  155.  
  156.   10. "Next volume" dialog allows to modify not only a name,
  157.       but also a size of next volume, so you may create volumes
  158.       of different size. This dialog is displayed if you create
  159.       volumes on removable disks or set "Pause after each volume"
  160.       option in "Advanced" part of archiving dialog.

  162.   11. Several -v<size> switches can be specified in the command
  163.       line mode to set different sizes for different volumes.
  164.       For example, 'rar a -v100k -v200k -v300k arcname' command
  165.       sets 100 KB size for first volume, 200KB for second
  166.       and 300KB for all following volumes.

  168.   12. More WinRAR commands support Unicode in archive names.
  169.       If your Windows is NT based (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, 2003),
  170.       you may modify archives with non-English names regardless
  171.       of Regional Settings.

  206.       will set the same password. Eariler WinRAR understood only
  207.       the first syntax ("-pmy password") and only the console RAR
  208.       handled both.

  210.   23. Data analyzing module is tuned to detect executable and audio
  211.       data more accurately. Erroneous selecting of executable
  212.       and audio algorithms could reduce the compression ratio
  213.       in some situations.

  215.   24. WinRAR understands the command line switch -hp without
  216.       a parameter and requests to enter a password when processing it.

  218.   25. WinRAR preserves NTFS streams of updated archives, if archive
  219.       and temporary files are resided on NTFS partition. For example,
  220.       if you entered some comments in "Summary" section of archive
  221.       properties, they will not be lost when updating an archive
  222.       using WinRAR. Do not confuse NTFS streams of archive itself
  223.       and streams of archived files, latter can be preserved
  224.       by previous versions as well.

  226.   26. It is possible to prohibit change of archiving password
  227.       with "WinRAR\Policy\Password" Registry value. This feature
  228.       may help to avoid encrypting of important data in multi-user
  229.       environment. Read "Configuration settings/Registry variables"

  232.   27. "Select toolbar buttons" dialog allows to specify separators
  233.       after any toolbar button.

  235.   28. New console RAR -si[name] switch to compress data from stdin
  236.       (standard input).

  239.       when listing RAR/Unix archives contained symbolic links.
