  4. APC PowerChute Personal Edition for Windows 98, Me, 2000, 2003 and XP

  7. System Requirements
  8.  
  9. The system requirements for PowerChute Personal Edition are as 
  10. follows:-
  11.  
  12. CPU: Pentium or higher. 
  13. RAM: 32MB.
  14. Free hard disk space: 12MB.
  15. I/O ports: Minimum of one Universal Serial Bus (USB) port.
  16.  
  17. Operating systems:
  18. Microsoft Windows 98 (build number 4.10.1998) 
  19. - or - 
  20. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (build number 4.10.2222A) 
  21. - or - 
  22. Microsoft Windows Me (build number 4.90.3000)
  23. - or -
  24. Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 (Server, Professional and Advanced Server)
  25. - or -
  26. Microsoft Windows XP SP1 (Home and Professional) (Version 2002, 
  27. build number 2600)

  31. Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher (Netscape may also be installed).
  32. Graphics: Resolution of 800x600 with 16-bit colors (65536 colors).

  34. USB Hubs:
  35. Self-powered USB Hubs: An external USB hub expands a single port to 4
  36. or 7 ports. If the hub gets its power directly from the PC through 
  37. the USB cable, it is said to be "bus-powered". If the power is 
  38. supplied externally, in other words if it has its own power cord to 
  39. plug into an outlet, the hub is considered "self-powered". 
  40.  
  41. If the hub is self-powered, the external power cord must be plugged 
  42. into a battery backup outlet on the UPS. Configured in this manner, 
  43. the UPS will be able to sustain power to the hub during an outage. 
  44. Failure to do so will result in a loss of power to the USB hub which 
  45. will inhibit the operation of all downstream peripherals.

  48. USB Extension Cables:
  49. USB was designed to operate in the local desktop environment. Full 
  50. speed USB devices can be connected up to 5 meters (~16.5 feet) apart. 
  51. Low speed USB devices can be connected up to 3 meters (~10 feet) apart. 
  52. The APC USB UPSs are low speed peripherals and should be connected 
  53. directly to the PC or hub to ensure reliable operation of the 
  54. PowerChute Personal Edition software. The USB Standards Committee and 
  55. APC do not approve the usage of extended USB cables. Their usage will 
  56. not harm USB equipment but overall system reliability could be affected.

  59. Online Help:
  60. The context-sensitive help (which is displayed when you press the     
  61. information button or F1 on the main application) displays a page 
  62. with the title 'The page cannot be displayed' when the software is 
  63. installed to a long path (i.e. greater than 56 characters) on your 
  64. system. This is due to a problem with the help facility being used. 
  65. To avail of help, install to a path that is shorter than 56 characters.

  68. Keyboard Access:
  69. It is not possible to navigate through the application using the tab 
  70. keys. Use your mouse to navigate around the application.

  73. Netscape Issues:
  74. For computers that have Netscape configured as the default browser, 
  75. you may get a dialog indicating that Windows cannot locate a web link 
  76. when you visit a page through the application. You may launch Netscape 
  77. and type the web address manually or use Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  78. as your default browser.

  81. Multiple Setup Execution Issues: 
  82. Problems may arise if you try to run the installer twice in quick 
  83. succession. When you launch the installer, wait until it is finished 
  84. before trying to run it again.

  87. Error Messages From USB Devices:
  88. Ensure that all USB devices connected to your computer via the USB 
  89. port are powered up before booting up your computer. This will prevent 
  90. driver error messages from appearing and reduce compatibility issues 
  91. between devices.

  94. Acceptance of the APC Battery BackUP Driver on Windows 2000/2003/XP:
  95. On some systems, during the install you may be asked if you want to 
  96. accept the driver 'APC Battery BackUP' as Windows indicates that it 
  97. is not signed. This message should not be presented as this driver is 
  98. signed and approved by Microsoft, and is safe to use. Press the 
  99. 'Continue Anyway' button to accept the driver.

  102. Hibernation Option Not Available on Windows 2000 Advanced Server:
  103. In order for Windows 2000 Advanced Server to support hibernation, it 
  104. is necessary to remove the Terminal Services component and the 
  105. Terminal Service License component (under Add/Remove Components).

  108. On Windows 2000, 2003 or XP, PowerChute reports "Managed PC Shutdown 
  109. cannot be provided":
  110. Users who log onto their system using accounts with restricted 
  111. privileges might see this displayed. However, despite the message, 
  112. a managed shutdown is provided during an extended power problem.

  115. The Microsoft Windows power icon:
  116. PowerChute software enhances the native power functionality of         
  117. Windows, on installation it replaces the Windows power icon in the    
  118. systray on the taskbar with its own icon. On Windows 2000, 2003 and   
  119. XP when PowerChute is uninstalled from your system, the Windows power 
  120. icon is displayed when you reboot your computer but on Windows 98 and 
  121. Me you will need to re-apply the 'Show power meter on taskbar' 
  122. setting in the Power Management Properties dialog box in order to 
  123. display the Windows power icon.

  126. Symantec's Norton SystemWorks (2000, 2001 or 2002) issues:
  127. If you have SystemWorks installed on your system and Windows does not 
  128. shut down correctly during an unattended shutdown, you should disable 
  129. the SystemWorks icon in the Windows system tray. Select Options for 
  130. Norton SystemWorks and, in the General tab, disable the 'Use the 
  131. Norton Tray Manager' option.

  134. Compatibility issues with Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate 
  135. Edition:
  136. The Corporate Edition of Norton AntiVirus can have compatibility 
  137. issues with PowerChute Personal Edition. We do not recommend that you 
  138. have both of these applications installed at the same time.

  141. Possible issues with Windows Display Properties: 
  142. On certain Windows Operating Systems if you have large font settings 
  143. or high contrast settings applied, you may notice that it can affect 
  144. the appearance of PowerChute Personal Edition. To rectify this, we 
  145. would recommend that you use the default Windows Display Properties.

  148. Animated graphics in PowerChute Personal Edition:
  149. In order for the animated graphics to function correctly in the 
  150. software, ensure that the "Play animations in web pages" check box is 
  151. enabled in Internet Explorer (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab 
  152. - Multimedia).
