  44. * 1.  OVERVIEW
  45. ************************************************************
  46. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
  47. Windows* INF files to the target system. These files outline
  48. to the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset 
  49. components in order to ensure that the following features 
  50. function properly:
  51.  
  52.    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
  53.    - PCIe Support
  54.    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
  55.    - SATA Storage Support
  56.    - USB Support
  57.    - Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in 
  58.      the Device Manager
  59.  
  60. This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive,
  61. Silent and Unattended Preload. Interactive Mode requires 
  62. user input during installation; Silent Mode and Unattended 
  63. Preload do not.  
  64.  
  65. This software also offers a set of command line flags, 
  66. which provide additional installation choices. The command 
  67. line flags are not case sensitive. Refer to Section 4 for 
  68. detailed descriptions of these flags.

  70. Important Note:
  71. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is 
  72. distributed in two formats: self extracting .EXE files
  73. (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP). 
  74. Depending on which distribution format is being executed, the 
  75. command-line syntax may differ. Refer to Section 4 for more 
  76. details.

  79. ************************************************************
  80. * 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 
  81. ************************************************************
  82. 1.  Please refer to the Release Notes to view the list of 
  83.     chipsets that the software included with this distribution 
  84.     package is designed to operate with.
  85.  
  86. 2.  One of the following operating systems must be 
  87.     fully installed and running on the system
  88.     before installing this software:
  89.  
  90.     Windows* 2000      5.00.2195  (Original Release)
  91.     Windows* XP        5.10.2600  (Original Release)
  92.     Windows Server* 2003  5.20.3790  (Original Release)
  93.  
  94.     To verify which operating system has been installed onto 
  95.     the target system, follow the steps below:
  96.  
  97.     a.  Click on Start.
  98.     b.  Select Settings.
  99.     c.  Select Control Panel.
  100.     d.  Double-click on the System icon.
  101.     e.  Click on the General system properties tab.
  102.     f.  Verify which OS has been installed by reading
  103.         the System information.
  104.                               
  105. 3.  It is recommended that the software be installed on 
  106.     systems with at least 64MB of system memory when using 
  107.     Windows* 2000, Windows* XP and Windows Server* 2003. 
  108.  
  109. 4.  It is recommended that there be a minimum of 5MB of hard
  110.     disk space on the system in order to install this software.
  111.  
  112. 5.  Check the System Requirements. The operating system 
  113.     must be fully installed and running on the system before
  114.     running this software.
  115.  
  116. 6.  Close any running applications to avoid installation problems.
  117.  
  118. 7.  It is recommended that the Intel(R) Chipset Software 
  119.     Installation Utility be installed onto the target system 
  120.     prior to the installation of other drivers.
  121.  
  122. Please check with the system provider to determine which 
  123. operating system and Intel(R) chipset are used in the system.

  127. * 3.  CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE
  128. ************************************************************
  129. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility package 
  130. contains the following items:
  131.

  137.    *** NOTE:  Only the files that reference the currently

  141.               not copied to the <Windows>\INF directory.
  142.               Refer to Section 4 for more information.

  147. * 4.  LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS
  148. ************************************************************
  149. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports  
  150. several command line flags for various installation options. 
  151. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a 
  152. space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag.
  153.  
  154. Due to the different distribution formats available for the
  155. Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command
  156. line flag syntax may vary:
  157.  
  158. 1. Self-Extracting .EXE Distribution:
  159.       When installing this software using the .EXE 
  160.       distribution, an extra '-A' must be appended to the 
  161.       INFINST_xxx.EXE program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) 
  162.       in order to successfully pass command line flags.
  163.  
  164.    NOTE: The extra '-A' flag for the self-extracting .EXE 
  165.          package is different from the '-A' command line flag 
  166.          option described under Compressed .ZIP Distribution.        
  167.  
  168.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  169.                described below, the installation program 
  170.                should be invoked as follows:  
  171.           
  172.                INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P)
  173.  
  174. 2. Compressed .ZIP Distribution:
  175.       When installing this software using the .ZIP distribution, 
  176.       use the command line flags exactly as discribed below.
  177.  
  178.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  179.                described below, the installation program 
  180.                should be invoked as follows:  
  181.                         
  182.                SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P)
  183.  
  184. Below is a list of all the available command line flags that
  185. may be used with the program call.  Note that the '-L' and 
  186. the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command 
  187. line flag list.
  188.  
  189. Flag            Description
  190. ----            -----------
  191. -?              Displays the list of available command line 
  192.                 flags. This flag works in Interactive Mode only.  
  193.  
  194. -A              Extracts the INF files and Readme to either 
  195.                 "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or the
  196.                 <Installation Path> directory specified using 
  197.                 the '-P' flag. The software will NOT install 
  198.                 these INF files to the system. This flag can 
  199.                 be combined only with the '-P' flag. All other
  200.                 options will be ignored if the '-A' flag is 
  201.                 specified. This flag works in either Silent 
  202.                 Mode or Interactive Mode.
  203.  
  204. -Aonly          Extracts the needed INF files to install on the
  205.                 current system. If the install has been run once
  206.                 successfully, '-Aonly' will not return any INFs.
  207.                 when used in conjunction with '-overall' switch, 
  208.                 all the needed INFs for the system will be 
  209.                 extracted.
  210.  
  211. -B              Automatically reboots the system after 
  212.                 installation. This flag is ignored if '-A' flag
  213.                 is specified. This flag works in either Silent 
  214.                 Mode or Interactive Mode.
  215.  
  216. -f2<path\Logfile>             
  217.                 Specifies an alternate location and name 
  218.                 of the log file created by InstallShield Silent.
  219.                 This option is used for silent instllation from
  220.                 a CD. 'Path' indicates the directory path where
  221.                 installation status is logged in file 'Logfile'
  222.  
  223. -L<LangCode>    Forces the InstallShield* user interface to 
  224.                 display the specified language during setup.  
  225.                 Note that there should be NO space between 
  226.                 '-L' and the 4-digit language code (see below). 
  227.                 This flag and the '-S' flag must be placed at 
  228.                 the end of the command line flag list. This 
  229.                 flag works in Interactive Mode only.
  230.  
  231. -NOLIC          Disables the license agreement dialog box during
  232.                 installation. This parameter works in Interactive
  233.                 Mode only.
  234.  
  235. -NOREAD         Disables the Readme display during installation. 
  236.                 This flag works in Interactive Mode only.
  237.  
  238. -NOWEL          Disables the welcome screen during installation. 
  239.                 This flag works in Interactive Mode only.
  240.  
  241. -OVERALL        Updates ALL INF drivers on all available devices
  242.                 even if third party drivers are currently installed. 
  243.                 This flag works in Interactive Mode only.
  244.  
  245. -OVERIDE        Updates the storage drivers even if a third
  246.                 party storage driver is currently installed. 
  247.                 This flag works in Interactive Mode only.
  248.  
  249. -OVERSMB        Updates the LAN drivers even if third party LAN 
  250.                 drivers are currently installed. This flag works 
  251.                 in Interactive Mode only.
  252.  
  253. -P<Installation Path>   
  254.                 Specifies the hard disk location to which the 
  255.                 INF program files are copied. If this flag is 
  256.                 not specified at the command line, the 
  257.                 <Installation Path> directory is as follows: 
  258.                 
  259.                    C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst
  260.                 
  261.                 If this flag is used without the '-A' option, 
  262.                 only the Readme will be copied to 
  263.                 <Installation Path>. The directory name can 
  264.                 include spaces, but then a pair of double quotes 
  265.                 (") must enclose the directory name. There should
  266.                 not be any space between the switch '-p' and the 
  267.                 directory name. This flag works in either Silent 
  268.                 Mode or Interactive Mode.
  269.  
  270. -S              Runs the Installer in Silent Mode (no user 
  271.                 interface is displayed). 
  272.                 
  273. -SKIP<DevID>
  274.                 Suppresses the installation of one or more 
  275.                 devices.This flag works in either Silent Mode 
  276.                 or Interactive Mode. 
  277.

  311. * 5.  CONTENTS OF THE EXTRACTED FILES
  312. ************************************************************
  313. INF files are copied to the hard disk after running the Intel(R)
  314. Chipset Software Installation Utility executable with an '-A' 
  315. flag (i.e., "INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A" or "SETUP.EXE -A"). The 
  316. location of the INF files depends on whether a '-P' flag is 
  317. specified along with the '-A' flag:
  318.  
  319. 1.  If a '-P' flag is not specified, then the INF files are 
  320.     copied to the following directory:  
  321.        "C:\Program Files\Intel\INFINST"
  322. 2.  If a '-P' flag is specified, then the INF files are copied 
  323.     to the location listed immediately after the '-P' flag.  
  324.  
  325.     Refer to Section 4 for more information on flag usage.
  326.  
  327. After INF file extraction, the INF files and components are 
  328. copied to the <INF Extract Directory>. These files and 
  329. components are categorized according to the Intel(R) Chipset 
  330. types. The following table summarizes the locations of the 
  331. INF files by chipsets:
  332.  
  333.    NOTE: The INF files are designed to update only devices
  334.          not supported by the corresponding operating system.
  335.  
  336.    NOTE: "<INF Extract Directory>" is abbreviated "<IED>" in 
  337.         the remainder of this section.
  338.  
  339. For each subdirectory of <IED> (e.g., ICH, ICH2, etc), 
  340. the INF files are further classified according to 
  341. the operating systems they are designed for:
  342.  
  343.    Win2000\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  344.                      Windows* 2000 ONLY.
  345.    WinXP\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  346.                      Windows* XP ONLY.
  347.    Win2003\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  348.                      Windows Server* 2003 ONLY.
  349.  
  350. NOTE: INFPrelo.INF makes a CUSTOM.INF template that installs 
  351. the INF files for Intel(R) chipsets during operating system 
  352. setup. OEMs can incorporate this file into the Setup directory 
  353. for the OEM Preload Kit. (Refer to Section 8 for more details.)
  354.  
  355.  
  356. ************************************************************
  357. * 6.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE
  358. ************************************************************
  359. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  360.      described in Section 2 above.
  361.  
  362. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  363.      Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE
  364.      Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE
  365.  
  366. 3.  You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement.  
  367.      If you do not agree, the installation program will exit 
  368.      before extracting any files.
  369.     
  370. 4.  Once the operating system reboots, follow the on-screen 
  371.      instructions and accept default settings to complete the 
  372.      setup.
  373.  
  374.  
  375. ************************************************************
  376. * 7.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE
  377. ************************************************************
  378. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  379.      described in section 2.
  380.  
  381. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  382.      For silent install with auto-reboot:
  383.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  384.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s
  385.        Compressed .ZIP distribution:
  386.        SETUP.EXE -b -s
  387.     - or -
  388.      For silent install without auto-reboot:
  389.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  390.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s
  391.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE -s
  392.  
  393. 3.  The utility will perform the necessary updates and 
  394.      record the installation status in the following system 
  395.      registry key:
  396.         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst
  397.  
  398. 4.  If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the 
  399.      system will automatically reboot if the update was
  400.      successful.
  401.  
  402.     NOTE: The system MUST be rebooted for all device 
  403.     updates to take effect.
  404.  
  405. 5.  To determine whether the install was successful, verify 
  406.      the "install" value in the registry key specified in 
  407.      Step 3.
  408.  
  409. 6.  In Silent Mode the utility will not display the license
  410.      agreement. When using Silent Mode the license agreement,
  411.      license.txt, will be placed in the following folder:
  412.      Program Files/Intel/INFInst folder.
  413.      Please read this agreement.
  414.

  441. * 8.  INSTALLING THE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION
  442. ************************************************************
  443.     This procedure requires a minimum of 5MB of hard disk space. 
  444.     It is important to make sure there is enough disk space 
  445.     before beginning the copy process. Copy the operating system 
  446.     installation files from the setup directory to a directory
  447.     on the hard disk. This can be done by opening 'My Computer', 
  448.     right-clicking on the correct drive, and selecting 'Properties'.
  449.     The directories shall be referred to as follows:
  450.  
  451.       Windows* 2000    : <WIN2000 Setup Directory>
  452.       Windows* XP    : <WINXP Setup Directory>
  453.       Windows Server* 2003 : <WIN2003 Setup Directory>
  454.

  457. * 8A.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* 2000 INF FILES PRIOR TO
  458. *      OS INSTALLATION
  459. ************************************************************
  460. NOTE: The Windows* 2000 OEM Preload Kit distribution CD
  461.       contains a setup directory with all the base operating
  462.       system setup files and installation programs 
  463.       (WINNT.EXE and WINNT32.EXE).  
  464.  
  465. The name of the directory may vary depending on the 
  466. distribution CD (e.g., \I386\).
  467.  
  468. 1.  Create the following directory structure under the 
  469.     <WIN2000 Setup Directory>: 
  470.  
  471.        \$OEM$\$$\INF

  473. 2.  Copy the Windows* 2000 INF files from 
  474.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000 to the directory
  475.     created in Step 1 above:

  487. 4.  Copy the Windows* 2000 INF files and the catalog files 
  488.     (.CAT) from <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000 to the 
  489.     directory created in Step 4 above:

  492.  
  493.     NOTE: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  494.           interest.  Refer to Section 8 for more details.

  496. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* 2000 installation
  497.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WIN2000 Setup 
  498.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file. The
  499.     answer file must include the following information:
  500.    
  501.        [Unattended]
  502.        OemPreinstall = Yes
  503.        OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF"
  504.  
  505.     A sample answer file for preloading the Intel(R) Chipset
  506.     Software Installation utility files is available: 
  507.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\Win2000\INFAnswr.TXT
  508.     
  509.     For more information about Windows* 2000 answer files 
  510.     and unattended installations, please refer to the 
  511.     Microsoft* Windows* 2000 Guide to Unattended Setup. 
  512.     If you are a computer manufacturer, refer to the 
  513.     Microsoft Windows* 2000 OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) 
  514.     User Guide for more information about the \$OEM$ folder. 
  515.     Otherwise, refer to the Microsoft Windows* 2000 Deployment 
  516.     Guide.

  518. 6.  Run "WINNT.EXE /u:<answer file name> /s:<WIN2000 Setup 
  519.     Directory>" to install Windows* 2000.

  523. * 8B.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* XP INF FILES PRIOR TO
  524. *      OS INSTALLATION

  526. NOTE: The Windows* XP OEM Preload Kit distribution CD contains

  528.       setup files and installation programs (WINNT.EXE and

  553. 4.  Copy the Windows* XP INF files AND the catalog files 
  554.     (.CAT) from <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinXP to the 
  555.     directory created in Step 4 above:

  557.        <WINXP Setup Directory>\$OEM$\$1\drivers\IntelINF
  558.  
  559.     NOTE: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  560.           interest. Refer to Section 8 for more details.

  562. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* XP installation
  563.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WINXP Setup 
  564.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  565.     answer file must include the following information:
  566.    
  567.        [Unattended]
  568.        OemPreinstall = Yes
  569.        OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF"
  570.  
  571.     A sample answer file for preloading the Intel(R) Chipset
  572.     Software Installation utility files is available:

  584.     Directory>" to install Windows* XP.

  588. * 8C.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS SERVER* 2003 INF FILES PRIOR 
  589. *      TO OS INSTALLATION

  593.       system setup files and installation programs (WINNT.EXE

  877. It is assumed that the system requirements in Section 2 above 
  878. have been satisfied.

  880. Issue:      At the end of executing the Chipset Software 
  881.             Installation Utility, the USB keyboard and mouse
  882.             will stop functioning. This problem only occurs 
  883.             when using Windows XP with SP1 on a system configured
  884.             with a USB keyboard and/or mouse. This condition is 
  885.             temporary until a system reset.
  886.  
  887. Solution1:  A recommended fix has been provided by Microsoft
  888.             in Knowlege Base article(822603). For additional 
  889.             information, please refer to the KB article located at
  890.             http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];822603  
  891.  
  892.             Please use the following installation procedures: 
  893.                 - Windows XP installed with SP1
  894.                 - QFE (822603) installed
  895.                 - Latest Chipset Utility Software installed.
  896.  
  897. Solution2:  The command line flag "-Skip <DevID>" can be used 
  898.             with the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation 
  899.             Utility program to cause the USB2 driver not to be 
  900.             installed. The DevID's for ICH4/ICH5 are 24CD/24DD. 
  901.             This will cause the USB2 controller to have a yellow 
  902.             exclamation point in Device Manager (Usually located
  903.             under Other Devices and identified as "Universal 
  904.             Serial Bus (USB) Controller"). To install the USB2 
  905.             driver right-click this entry, select update driver, 
  906.             and allow the system to install automatically. When
  907.             completed, nothing more should be required.
  908.  
  909. Issue:      System locks up during Device Manager Remove or 
  910.             during restart.
  911.  
  912.  
  913. Solution:   System lockup can occur during reboot as a 
  914.             result of several possible system issues.  In 
  915.             the event of system lockup, reboot the machine 
  916.             and view Device Manager.  If devices are listed 
  917.             properly and the system experiences no further 
  918.             problems, then the .INF file restore process was 
  919.             successful. If devices are not configured 
  920.             correctly, try re-running the procedures 
  921.             outlined in Section 3.
  922.  
  923.             If this does not fix the issue or further issues
  924.             are experienced, reinstall the operating system.
  925.  
  926. Issue:      After running the setup program and rebooting 
  927.             the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find 
  928.             one of the following files: ESDI_506.pdr
  929.  
  930. Solution:   Click Browse in the dialog box where this issue
  931.             occurs, locate the <Windows>\System\IOSubsys
  932.             directory. Click OK. The system should be able to
  933.             locate this file in this directory and continue 
  934.             re-enumerating for the new devices.
  935.  
  936. Issue:      After running the setup program and rebooting 
  937.             the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find 
  938.             one of the following files:
  939.  
  940.                   UHCD.SYS
  941.                   USBD.SYS
  942.                   USBHUB.SYS
  943.  
  944. Solution:   Click Browse in the dialog box where this issue 
  945.             occurs and locate the following directory:
  946.  
  947.                   <Winnt>\System32\drivers 
  948.                   
  949.             Click OK. The system should be able to locate the 
  950.             files in this directory and continue re-enumerating 
  951.             for the new devices.
  952.  
  953. Issue:      After running the setup program and rebooting 
  954.             the machine, Windows reports that it cannot find 
  955.             the following file: ISAPNP.VXD
  956.  
  957. Solution:   Click Browse in the dialog box where this issue 
  958.             occurs and locate the <Winnt>\System directory. 
  959.             Click OK. The system should be able to locate this 
  960.             file in this directory and continue re-enumerating 
  961.             for the new devices.
  962.  
  963. Issue:      After performing the silent install, the 
  964.             HKLM\Software\Intel\InfInst key was not created 
  965.             or the data of the value "install" is not 
  966.             "success".
  967.  
  968. Solution:   This is caused by one of the following 
  969.             scenarios:
  970.                - The current system does not contain a 
  971.                  supported operating system, or
  972.                  -or-
  973.                - The current system does not contain a 
  974.                  supported chipset.
